Wanda Cukier

CUKIER, Wanda (née Schaechter). July 21, 1919 - February 25, 2013 Peacefully, at home, on Monday February 25th, 2013, surrounded by loving family and friends. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years , Jacob(Jurek) Cukier. Wanda will be missed by her extensive family - Carmela and Michael Mindel, Danny Mindel and Marie Andrée Gauthier and their sons Joshua and Noah Mindel; Ali Mindel and Ron Roza and their daughters Lily and Ava, Wanda's son Michael Cukier and Renata Hochelber, and by Michael's children - Omri Cukier, Tony Cukier and Daniele Nascimento, Gigi Cukier and Jay Sala, and their three boys Yuri, Arthur and Link, and by Gabriel Cukier as well as by Wanda's son Rony Cukier and Mimi Cukier and their children Olivia Cukier, Max Cukier, Ashley Cukier and Sasha Cukier; and by Wanda's daughter Leora Cukier and her daughter Mattie Cukier Guttman, and by her daughters-in-law, Jenny Cukier, and Isabel Poletti. Wanda's family was extremely close and supportive. Wanda was born in Vienna, on July 21st, 1919, where her father Jancu Shaechter was studying engineering. After his studies, the family moved back to their home town of Itcani, a suburb of Suceava in the region of Bukovina....in northeastern Romania. Wanda grew up in a rural setting and did her elementary schooling in Buzau, and then the family moved to Bucurest, the capital. Wanda had a suitor - a dashing young bachelor - originally from Lodz, Poland. - Jurek Cukier. They enjoyed going for long walks, and taking boat rides on the lovely lake in Cismigiu Park. They married during the war, in Bucurest, between bombing attacks, on April 23rd, 1944. With the situation in Romania becoming more and more perilous for Jews, they managed to escape in 1944 - on board the ship Belasitsa - from Constanta to Istanbul, and then on a sealed train through Turkey - for two weeks through Anatolia into Syria and finally into Palestine. In Palestine, and later in Israel, they had Carmela and Michael....and then later moved to Milano, Italy, where Rony was born. Finally, they came to Montréal in 1957 and Leora was born a few years later. Wanda was the glue that held the far-flung Cukier-Goldstein-Goren-Fromchenko family together. Everyone loved her, admired her and respected her opinion. She was a real Matriarch - caring for her brood and caring as well for her late parents, Anya and Jancu Schaechter in Tel-Aviv. She was very hospitable to all the members of her extended family, especially to her many nephews - who spent years studying in Montreal. They ate many of their meals in her house over their college years. She was also very hospitable to her many friends. Her fabulous chicken soup, her smoked eggplant, her special porcupine cake, brownies and marble cake are still talked about in hushed tones to this day. She would never let you leave her home without you having a piece of cake or a brownie. Wanda was unique.....She has left us - but as she liked to say - "Nothing Dies That Is Remembered" ....and she will always be remembered. Many thanks go out to Dr. Todd McConnell who took such good care of her over the last many years of her life... And much appreciation goes to her caregivers at home - Nancy Alcantara, Melita Alcantara, Jess Magana and Elynne Palabrica. Funeral Service from Paperman and Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Thursday, February 28, at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Temple Emanu-El Beth Shalom Cemetery on Mount-Royal Boulevard. The family will be receiving condolences at 4955 Glencairn on Thursday and Friday.
