Arnold Ellis Pritchard
PRITCHARD, Arnold Ellis of Wilcox, SK passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at the age of 89 years. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Viola Pritchard; sister Elma; brother Lester; sister-in-law Anne and brother-in-law Ronnie Burnside. Arnold's memory will be cherished by his wife Reatha; daughter Marilyn (Terry) Poppelwell and their children Kerilei (Greg) Oldoerp, and her son Jair (Anndrea) Poppelwell, and their children Franchesca and Elliot; Teresa (Daniele) Riggio and son Massimo; Blake Poppewell and Brett (Amanda) Poppelwell and daughter Tristyn; daughter Marsha (Larry) Borowko and their children Shasta (Clayton) Mund and their children Ava and Justus; and Ryan Borowko. He will also be lovingly remembered by his sister Elsie Burnside; brother Lorne; sister-in-law Thelma Pritchard; sister Luella (Eldon) Johnson; brother Eric (Luella); as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. Arnold was born on the family farm near Khedive on June 24, 1919. In 1941, he married Reatha Johnson and they farmed near Pangman. In 1962, they moved to the Wilcox area where they have continued to farm. A funeral service was held at Regina Funeral Home on Friday, December 12 at 10:30 a.m. Following the reception, the interment will be at Pangman Cemetery. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Elmview Extendicare and Santa Maria Care Home for their care of Arnold in his last years. Gordon G.D. Frey
On November 25, 2008 Gordon G.D. Frey, late of Copperas Cove, Texas lost his fight against cancer, and passed away at the age of 64. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Helga Frey, and his parents Frank and Anne Frey of Weyburn. Gordon is survived by his daughter Andrea (Steve) Guilday of Junction City, Kansas, brother Brian (Delores) Frey of Weyburn, brother Marvyn (Linda) Frey of Calgary, AB as well as grandchildren Alex and Samantha Cockrell of Junction City, Kansas, as well as many nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held in Copperas Cove, Texas. Interment was held at the Killeen Texas Veterans Cemetery on December 1. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed.
Veronica Fettes (nee Celly)
Veronica Fettes (nee Celly) passed away peacefully, with her family, Doctor and nurses, by her side on Sunday, December 7th, 2008. Vern was 92 years old. She was born June 28, 1916 to John and Maria Celly at the family farm SE 32-1-18 W2 in the Sybouts District R.M. No. 8 Lake Alma. Vern married Alfred Fettes on September 29, 1938 at Sheridan County Courthouse in Plentywood, Montana. They moved to the NE 28-2-19 W2, which he was renting from Prosper Uytterhagen. In 1942 Alfred and Veronica purchased this quarter. Alfred and Veronica shared 55 years together on the farm until his passing in 1993. Veronica remained on the farm, in her own house, until late October 2008, when she then moved to the Radville Marian Health Centre and remained there until her passing. She enjoyed curling, bowling, playing cards, watching sports and Dallas on TV, crocheting and of course cooking. She loved company, whether it was family, friends or a stranger and always made everyone feel at home. Coffee and food were always on hand and she always made sure everyone was well fed before they left. Veronica was predeceased by her husband Alfred; daughter, Dorothy; son, Terrance; parents, John and Marie Celly; parents-in-law, Jack and Maggie Fettes; 5 sisters, Anna, Maria, Celia, Mary and Helen; 1 brother John; brothers-in-law, Edward LaBatte, Don Boyd, Willie Duthie, Jack Fettes, Allan Fettes and Charlie Kaufmann; sisters-in-law, Elaine Kaufmann, Carmen Fettes and Gladys Fettes; as well as many numerous friends and members of the Fettes and Celly families. Veronica leaves to mourn her daughter Shirley (Al) Gruber; special Granddaughter Marnie Gruber; brother-in-law Norman Fettes; sisters-in-law, Ingrid Fettes, Gertrude Boyd and Mary Duthie; two special nephews Clifford and Richard LaBatte; as well as numerous special nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. A celebration of Veronica's life was held at the Minton Service Club Hall, Minton on December 11 at 1:00 with Kathy Gudnason officiating. Pallbearers were: Leon Uytterhagen, Barry LaBatte, Odaf Uytterhagen, Harold Uytterhagen, Tony Frischholz and Clifford Field. Interment followed at Gladmar Cemetery, Gladmar. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memoriam to the Radville Marian Health Centre Ladies Auxilliary. The family would like to extend their love and thanks to Dr. Oberholzer and the staff of the Radville Marian Health Centre/Radville Marian Home. Veronica loved you all and thought the world of you. Alex "Sandy" Watson
WATSON, Alex "Sandy" passed away December 2, 2008 at the age of 86 years. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Marion; brother Robert and his wife Jessie (2001). Sandy will be lovingly remembered by stepdaughter Irene Stevens; stepson Ken (Penny) Stevens; and grandsons Bobby (Leah) and Craig Stevens. A memorial service was held at Knox United Church in Bengough on Friday, December 5 at 2:00 p.m. Interment at a Regina Memorial Gardens Cemetery at a later date. Antonette E. "Toni" Hippe, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on Sunday, December 7th, 2008 at the age of 83 years. Toni was predeceased by her parents, Ignatius and Anne Wack; her husband Eric Hippe; brothers and sisters. Toni is survived by her children: Carleen (Terry) Stott, Saskatoon, and their children, Tricia (Wayne) [Tegan, Michael and Shawn], Chris (Samantha) [Simon and Sophie], Chad (Lindsay) [Asha and Mia]; Rob Hippe (Nancy Kopec) Weyburn; Gerald (Shelley) Hippe, and their son Justin, Weyburn; sister, Mina Eglauer, Tofield, AB as well as brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Toni's family and her faith were most important to her. She also loved cooking, baking, quilting and sewing. The prayers for Toni were held on Tuesday, December 9th at 7:00 p.m. at RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. The funeral mass was held on Wednesday, December 10th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Weyburn with Fr. Gerry Bauche as celebrant. Marjorie M. McCombs Maas
Marjorie M. McCombs Maas, age 79, of Knoxville, Iowa formerly of Lovilia, Iowa died Monday, December 1, 2008 at Knoxville Hospitals and Clinics. She was born December 10, 1928 in Lang to Clarence and Bethany (Fitzpatrick) Hyer. She married Junior Goemaat. She later married Gene McCombs and he preceded her in death in 1985. She then married Louie Maas who preceded her in death in 1999. Marjorie is a graduate of Knoxville High School. She enjoyed donating money to various charities and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Marjorie is survived by three daughters, Sandy McCombs of Harvey, Iowa, Norma Blaylock of Glendale, Arizona, and Michile Sandeski of Weyburn; six sons, Bill, Chris, and Milo of Lovilia, Iowa, Wendell McCombs of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Larry Goemaat of Iowa City, Iowa, Marlin Goemaat of Knoxville; two step-children, Val Sinnett of British Columbia and Jim Maas of Regina; twenty-seven grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and two half-sisters, Marie Mattson of Alberta, and Doreen Hyer of Canada. Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Eugene McCombs and Louie Maas; two children, Nathan and Harold in infancy; and one half brother, Charles. Memorial services were held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 6 at Gilbert Funeral Home, Lovilia Chapel, with Rev. Leo Freel officiating. A private burial will follow services. Faye Elizabeth Bell
On Friday, December 5th, 2008, Faye Elizabeth Bell passed away suddenly at the Radville Health Centre at the age of 48 years. Faye was born on January 15, 1960 in Radville, Sask. to William and Theresa Bell. She was the youngest of five children and the only daughter. Faye grew up in Minton and went to elementary school there and then attended high school in Gladmar. Faye participated in many school sports: basketball, volleyball, softball and curling and her competitive nature helped her to be very successful at everything she endeavored to do. Faye married Monte Arnott shortly after high school and they had two sons together, Brett and Reid. She continued to curl and play softball and was very active in her community. After she parted with Monte, Faye continued to live in Ceylon for a short time. Faye then married Ted Heath and she and the boys moved to a farm south of Pangman. From this union they were blessed with the arrival of Amber. When Ted and Faye divorced, she moved to Pangman with the kids. Last year Faye moved to Ogema to live with her partner, Wayne Myren, and they were truly happy and content building their future together. Faye had a very strong work ethic and gave 100% in any job she did whether it was working in her younger days at the Motel and Café in Ceylon or more recently, selling hail insurance. But the health care profession was her true calling and she proved to have a natural gift for working with the elderly. Throughout the years she worked in Weyburn, Pangman and Radville with her most recent position with Home Care allowing her to continue to provide excellent care to the elderly in Bengough. Faye proved to be an asset in any community she lived. She was a dedicated hockey and dance mom and anything her kids were involved in, she was too. Her many affiliations and community group involvements are too numerous to name as she was a true volunteer. Faye's 'hoe to the end of the row' mentality assured everyone she worked with that her tasks would be truly embraces. Faye was an excellent cook and enjoyed making wine. Her talents were many and her sense of adventure immense. Travels of late to various parts of the world excited Faye as did camping. But Faye derived the most pleasure from being surrounded by family and friends and laughter. Faye is survived by her children: Brett Arnott of Pangman, Reid Arnott of Weyburn and Amber Heath (Brandon Omoth) of Weyburn; best friend and partner, Wayne Myren of Ogema; stepson, Dwayne Heath of Pangman; mother, Theresa Bell of Pangman; brothers: Ken (Carol) of North Battleford, Dennis (Colleen) of North Battleford, Art (Deanna) of Mankota; nieces and nephews: Kim (Kevin), Keith (Rhonda), Craig, Tanis (Dallas), James (Sheena), Michael, Cordelle and Brendan; great nieces and nephews: Amanda, Kody, Caleb, Jadyn, Spencer, Kaylee and Chaz; Wayne's children: Dustin (Andrea), Jenna, Kassi (Troy) McCabe and their daughter Raylee; as well as other relatives and friends. "Friendship is a priceless gift it's value is far greater than a mountain made of gold". Funeral services for Faye Elizabeth Bell were held Wednesday, December 10 at 4:00 p.m. from Ogema High School, Ogema with Father Stephen Bill officiating. All those who shared in Faye's life were considered to be Honorary Pallbearers. The Active Pallbearers were: Jason Lasby, Michael Van de Velde, Rishard Metke, Reese Pingert, Adam Kessler and Jason Zieg. Interment will be at a later date. Flo Van De Sype (Labbee)
Flo Van De Sype (Labbee), passed away December 9, 2008 at the age of ninety-five years with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Van De Sype in 1991, her parents Fred and Melina Labbee, four brothers, ten sisters and three great grandchildren. Flo leaves to mourn her three sons and two daughters: Alvin (Jeannine), Gary (Kay), Dave (Judy) Van De Sype all of Radville, Marie (Garnet) Wipf of Saskatoon and Donna (Russ) Moe of Weyburn; twelve grandchildren: Don (Rosanne), Pat (June), Tracy (Denis), Shauna (Darrell), Darren, Paula (Burt), Lisa, Patti (Jody), Cory (Amanda), Monty (Christina), Garrett (Danielle) and Brandon; seventeen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Flora Elsie Labbee was born January 20, 1913 in the Lacadia District to Fred and Melina Labbee, the tenth of fifteen children. She attended school at Lacadia, then worked for families in the district where she became a very good cook and seamstress. In 1932 she married Raymond Van De Sype and they began their life together on the farm. During those years, Flo always grew a very large garden, raised chickens and turkeys, and milked cows. Her garden was her pride and joy. She spent many hours weeding and keeping it clean. Flo always seemed to have an unending supply of food. Her door was always open to anyone at anytime and you never left hungry. Not only was she a fabulous cook, her sewing was phenomenal; it truly was her passion. Her grandchildren were blessed with many 'Grandma Originals'. In 1968 they moved to Radville. Flo worked in the dietary department at the Radville Community Hospital as a baker for ten years. She continued to devote time to her sewing and handiwork. She spent many hours making rugs, sewing, crocheting and became famous for her 'puffy baby quilts' with matching pillows. Flo was a very sociable person and loved to visit and play cards. There was nothing she loved better than a good gathering of friends and family. Due to failing eye-sight, in 2001, she moved to the Golden Heritage and in 2005 moved to the Radville Marian Health Centre until her passing. Prayers were said Friday, December 12 at 7:30 p.m. from Holy Family Church. The funeral mass was held Saturday, December 13 at 11:00 a.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Radville with Father Bruno as Celebrant. All her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren participated in the Celebration of her life. Interment followed in Laurier Cemetery, Radville. The Active Pallbearers were: Don Van De Sype, Pat Van De Sype, Darren Van De Sype, Cory Van De Sype, Monty Van De Sype, Garrett Moe, Brandon Moe and Wade Van De Sype. Marie Margaret Christiansen
Marie Margaret Christiansen (nee Krell) of Edmonton, AB died on December 1, 2008. She was born on May 21, 1934 in the farm home near Benson, SK. She was the fifth child of six born to Frederick and Magdalena Krell (nee Knapp). At Zion Lutheran Church, Stoughton, she was baptized into the Christian faith. On May 22, 1965 she married Gunner, the love of her life, who became a pastor in the Lutheran church. Together they served the Lord and touched the lives of many. She was predeceased by her son Carmi, her parents, her sisters, Sophie Knoch, Leah Diemert and Lily Paterson; her niece Debbie Paterson; her grand nephew, Matthew Diemert. Left to mourn her loss and cherish her memory are: Gunner, her devoted husband of 43 years; her family, son Trent (Gunilla) and their children Ossian, Rasmus, Stella all of Sweden; and son Cam (Maureen) of Calgary, AB; her brother William Krell (Ruth) of Stoughton; her sister Vi (Bob) Jacob of Winnipeg, MB; many nieces, nephews and friends. Marie attended Hilliar, Walton and Stoughton Schools, then finished her high school at Luther College, Regina. She graduated as an RN from Regina General Hospital and later earned her diploma in Public Health Nursing, and a Bachelor of General Studies. Marie enthusiastically nursed for 42 years, teaching nursing students, worked as a Public Health Nurse out of Assiniboia, Dinsmore and Arcola. She also worked in nursing homes in Meadow Lake and Edmonton, AB, then in Home Care. Her family and her grandchildren were her dearest treasures. Some of her passions were homemaking, entertaining, computer, photography, gardening, flowers, compiling family histories, socializing, travelling. Countless trips were made to Western Canada, USA, Europe, Sweden, Denmark, England, Ukraine, Russia, Germany, Korea; and in February 2008 to Hawaii with Gunner, Bill and Ruth Krell. Marie was very flamboyant, always ready to celebrate, to give her advice, to make a speech, to encourage family and friends, and to help any worthy cause or need, especially the Christian Children's Fund. Oh, that there were more Maries to make this world a better place! We will all miss you "sweet Marie"! Find rest from your labors until we meet again!! Funeral service was held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Edmonton, AB on December 6. Interment took place at Stoughton Cemetery on December 7.
Forrest Lindsey Smith
Forrest Lindsey Smith passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2008. He was born in Humeston, Iowa on October 16, 1911 and came to Canada 1913 with his parents William Oscar Smith and Bernice (Lindsey) Smith of Middletown and Cambridge, Ohio. They started farming at Lang, SK in the Crown Plains District. He was very active in all community affairs and a member of the United Church of Canada. Forrest played basketball and curling, loved to square dance and after retirement took up photography. He belonged to the Lang Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. Forrest married Annie Marrow in 1956 and they farmed the family farm together until she died in 1973. Forrest continued to farm until 1977, then retiring to spend his remaining years in Regina. He took up photography as a full time hobby. Forrest is survived by his brother Melvin Smith of Moose Jaw; sister Grace Cave of Moose Jaw; niece Jean Ann Mowchenko of Moose Jaw; and nephew Bill Cave of Calgary, AB. Alwin Carl Nelson
On Friday, December 12, 2008, Alwin Carl Nelson passed away at Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 80 years. Predeceased by his parents, Carl and Enid Nelson; one brother, Robert Nelson and a brother-in-law, Anton Kuntz. Alwin is survived by his brothers and sisters: Vivian Kuntz of Tribune, Evelyn (Ralph) Kuntz of Airdrie, AB, Grace (Peter) Syrnyk of Denver, Colorado, Gordon (Georgine) Nelson of Edmonton, AB, Faye (Wilfred) Wernicke of Swift Current; sister-in-law, Margaret Nelson of Weyburn, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Alwin was born in Bromhead on June 6, 1938 at Mrs. Humble's small hospital (she was his midwife/nurse) Dr. Brown attended the delivery. Alwin resided on a farm southeast of Oungre where he and his brothers, Robert and Gordon, sisters, Vivian, Evelyn, Grace and Fay were raised. He later moved to Weyburn. He continued farming the home quarter of land until his passing and the rest he rented out. Alwin's early school years were at Shakespeare School until it closed in the 40's. He finished his education at the old Lyndale School in Oungre where Carl Sampson drove the kids to school in his car. In his early years, Alwin attended shows at Oungre and Bromhead, he also attended local dances in the community. Alwin was a true farmer, "he loved the land"! Watching the crops grow and mature, the fall season was his favorite time of the year, when bringing in the harvest. Alwin and his brother Robert started their early farming career together after purchasing the 'Mann's Quarter'. They raised enough flax the first year to pay for the land! Alwin was a hard-working man and a good neighbour as he loved to visit with people. If a neighbour stopped in at the farm everything would shut down for coffee and a good visit. Alwin enjoyed going to auction sales, he had an eye for a good deal, which he would proudly exhibit whether it be equipment or antiques. Even in the last year he purchased some new equipment for farming and travel. It was well known that Alwin was a 'pack-rat' he never threw anything away, saying 'someone else will have to look after this stuff when I'm gone'. Alwin was the family 'Historian' and a wealth of information about the community and family history. He kept up with the times by reading and watching the news and the farm reports. Everyone knew not to phone or interrupt during these programs. For years he kept a daily diary of the weather. Alwin was a private, independent man, who cared about his family and they were very important to him. He attended numerous weddings, anniversaries, reunions and family functions, and always provided a room in his house for family gatherings as recently as a month ago. That family gathering, when all his sisters and brother came to Weyburn for a visit, will be forever treasured in their hearts. He leaves a legacy of loving memories for those who knew him. Alwin was dearly loved, and will be missed by all. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. The Pallbearers were his nephews: Darren Nelson, Richard Kuntz, Wade Ashworth, Kent Ashworth, Boyd Tytlandsvik and Lee Tytlandsvik.
