Sandra Myers
On Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Sandra Myers passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 46 years. Predeceased by her mother, Harriet Lejour; sister, Gloria LaRose and brother, Garth LaRose. Sandra will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Les Myers of Weyburn; four children: Amanda "Suck" Powder (Dale Baudria) of Ladysmith, BC, their children, Asia, Nevada and Austin; Miranda "Boda" Powder (Daniel Georghiades) of Regina, her children, Hannah and Cody; Adam "My Son" Powder (Candace "Candy" Dighans) of Weyburn, his son, Tanner Stacyszn; Irene "Beag" (Mike) Singleton of Regina; brothers, Jim Lejour, Dennis, Frank Jr., Fred and Ronnie LaRose; father, Frank LaRose; sister, Deb Roesslein; niece, Carissa Fradette; former husband, Don (Bernardine) Lafoy of Weyburn, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A Private Family Service was held Thursday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Sandra to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Weyburn Humane Society. Evelyn Lucille Oberkirsch
Evelyn Lucille Oberkirsch late of Weyburn passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008 at the age of 97 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Nelson and Minerva Ford; brothers: Clarence, Arthur and Robert Ford; her husband, Frank Oberkirsch; sons: Frank Jr. Oberkirsch and Jack Oberkirsch; daughter in law, Mary Oberkirsch; son in law, Johnny J. Stefan; great granddaughter, Taylor Hanson. She is survived by her children: sons, Kenneth Oberkirsch, Weyburn, Grant (Norma) Oberkirsch, Weyburn, twin daughters, Jean (Bill) Kowalishen, Kamsack and Joan Stefan, Regina; 21 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, many nieces, nephew, friends and also a good friend, Wendy Caldwell. A Visitation was held on Friday, March 28 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. Funeral Service was held on Saturday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m. from Calvary Baptist Church Weyburn with Mrs.Wendy Caldwell & Doug Loden officiating. Honorary pallbearers were all in attendance. Active pallbearers were Lorne, Robert, Garth and Garnet Oberkirsch, Jason Wilhelm and Craig Stefan. Register attendants were Jean Hanson and Kathy Oberkirsch. Terrance Patrick Hennessy
Terrance (Terry) Patrick Hennessy passed away March 21, 2008 at Tatagwa View in Weyburn. He was born June 10, 1944 in Ceylon. Terry was the eldest child of Dennis L. Hennessy and Joyce A. McNaughton Hennessy. Terry was a man of few words, many skills, personal integrity, subtle humour, mechanical ingenuity, interesting innovations, expressive actions and tremendous courage. Terry was a hard working community spirited, responsible man who could always be counted upon to get the job done. Terry will be sadly missed and forever loved by three brothers, Brian (Kim) and daughters (Deanna, Elizabeth, RaeAnn), Mike (Susan) and son (Austyn), Tom and sons (Jay, Tanner) all of Calgary, AB; one sister, Sharon Preston (Ken) and children (Jody, Dana) of Fort Frances, ON; uncle, aunts, cousins and friends. Terry was predeceased by his parents, one sister (Marylee), two brothers (Darrel, Timothy), grandparents and two uncles. Many thanks to the wonderful staff members in House 2 at Tatagwa View and the Weyburn General Hospital for their compassionate care. As was his practice, Terry came, he saw, he left. The job was done. Cremation has taken place through RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. A celebration of Terry's life will be held later in the summer.
Robert Oesch
Robert Oesch late of Midale, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2008 at the age of 73 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Allan and Mary Oesch; his wife Maxine; three brothers: Ted, Ernie and Ray. Bob is survived by his children: James (Susan) Oesch, Midale; Connie (Barry) Beetham, Hardasty, AB, Viola (Jim) Kot, Provost, AB; six grandchildren: Jacqui and Spencer Oesch, Terri (Jesse) Howey, Chris and Justin Beetham, Dallas, Leah, David and Jenny Kot; two sisters: Dorothy (Ray) McCarty, Biggar and Joan (Eugene) Tataryn, Saskatoon; three brothers: Alvin (Grace) Oesch, Hope, BC, Bill (Rose) Oesch, Ruthilda and Ed (Leila) Oesch, Biggar; his mother-in-law, Madge Arts, Midale; sister-in-law, Valerie Penny, Midale, brothers-in-law: Jim (Eileen) Arts, Midale and Keith McGregor as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Theresia Mott
On Saturday, April 26, 2008, Mary Theresia Mott, late of Creelman, passed away at the age of 85 years. Predeceased by her parents, Karl and Maria Poellhuber; her husband, Don and their son Charlie. Mary is survived by her loving children: (Jane) of Flin Flon, MB; Louisa (Bob) Helgason of Elrose; Eliford (Karen) of Creelman; and Diana (Pat) Hume of Regina; grandchildren: Rob (Sierra), Brad (Jill), Sean (Shea), Simone, Tina (Steven), Josh (Marcy), Jenny (Curtis), Becky, Tracy (Dean), Kirk (Karen) and Nadine; 20 great grandchildren; one brother, Charles (Stella) of Montreal, PQ; sister-in-law, Laverne Mott of Regina; brother-in-law, Cecil Cameron of Weyburn; and many nieces and nephews. Mary Theresia Poellhuber was born January 7, 1923 in Sierning, Austria. At 7 she and her family immigrated to Charleswood, Manitoba, near Winnipeg, MB. As a young woman she became a hairdresser and opened a shop in Winnipeg. She made a fateful decision to take dancing lessons at the Arthur Murray School of Dance. There she met a young Air Force Flight Sergeant named Don Mott who came from a small town in Saskatchewan. In July of 1947 Don and Mary were married and made their home on the farm near Creelman. In 1955 they built a house on the west side of Creelman. Their property included a large pasture for Don to raise Angus cattle and a large garden for Mary to raise vegetables. Her life revolved around Don and their four children. She loved the farm life. Volumes could be written about all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was very proud of each of them. Like all Creelmanites Mary was heavily involved with the community as long as her health permitted. She was involved with the Hartavon Homemakers and with 4-H grain, beef and sewing clubs; she helped with the bonspiel, the fair, and the Creelman plays. She threw herself in to each group, whether it was the Catholic Women's League, or teaching catechism. She became especially involved with the Creelman Ceramic Club. She loved sharing what she knew but she also loved learning. She took the Catholic Lay Ministry course with heart and soul. Notebooks are filled with homilies or sayings that touched her or that might touch someone else, and prayers for her guidance. She could be counted on for anyone needing a ride, or to lend an ear to listen. She delivered comfort and God's word to those in the very facility where she spent the last months of her life. When Don began to fail she allowed her world to become the size of his world. She would be the first to say how special and meaningful those years were to them both. It was difficult for her to deal with Don's death in 2002 after spending 55 years together in a model marriage. The following year her eldest son, Charlie passed away suddenly from cancer. Through both of these tragedies her faith in her Lord and Savior remained unswerving and she strived to accept His will. In 2005, Mary developed Parkinson's. Combined with Alzheimer's and diabetes she began a downward spiral that caused her much pain and sorrow in her last few months. We believe that her Lord heard her constant prayer and has indeed taken her home. Prayer service was held Thursday, May 1, at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 2, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Infante officiating. Interment followed in Golden Gates Cemetery, Creelman. Pallbearers were all Mary's grandchildren. Donations may be made in her memory to a charity of the donor's choice. Myrtle Elizabeth Meyers
On Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Myrtle Elizabeth Meyers passed away peacefully at Tatagwa View with family at her side, at the age of 86 years. Myrtle (mom) will be sadly missed by her family. Myrtle was born at Lethbridge, AB on March 9, 1922 to Herb and Jane Lamb. The family moved to the Huntoon area when Myrtle was very young. She attended school at Agusta. She had four miles to walk to school. She met and married Donald Meyers of Midale on December 10, 1943. They farmed north of Midale. They lived there for many years. They raised eight children. Myrtle enjoyed having a full house and feeding all of them. She made lots of quilts and did sewing for her children. She could even make "Coats of Many Colors". Myrtle loved her huge garden. She would get her husband or sons to work up the garden and then she would start working in the dirt. In the house, she would get her daughters cooking and cleaning and she would work along with them. There was not many rest times at the Meyer's. She liked her horses, working with the cattle, peacocks and pheasants. She was predeceased by her parents; Herb and Jane Lamb, daughter Betty-Jean, a great grand-son, five brothers and two sisters; John Lamb, Jim Lamb, Henry Lamb, Charlie Lamb, Bob Lamb, Violet Roberts and Gladys Holtz. Myrtle is survived by her husband, Donald Meyers (Weyburn), her children; Donna (Pat) Tracey (Calgary, AB), Norm (Elaine) Meyers (Estevan), Linda (Robert) Winter (Weyburn), Robert (Marion) Meyers (Estevan), Pat Ereth (Weyburn), special friend Ken Whitelaw (Melfort), Bernard Meyers (High Level, AB), Ken (Jackie) Meyers, (Midale), Cora (Darrel) Gosselin (Midale); 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers were: Kirk Tracey, Darren Tracey, Chris Meyers, Jeremy Meyers, Cody Gosselin, Darrel Gosselin, Rick Strutt. Arrangements were entrusted to RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. Hazeldene Evans
At Weyburn Special Care, April 25, 2008, Mom left us just three months before her 80th birthday. She was the eldest sister of Berty-Lou Dreis (Weyburn) and Brenda Hurst (Calgary) and the Mother of Cynthia (Ottawa) and Ferg (Victoria). She also leaves behind, a highlight of her world, her granddaughter, Kacey (Rob) DePape and her two great granddaughters, Ryleigh and Avery, (Fort McMurray), and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband John, parents, Pete and Bertha Hurst, and brother-in-law, Merv Dreis. A celebration of Hazeldene's life will be held Friday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Knox Presbeterian Church, Weyburn. Lunch will follow at Knox Hall. A special thank you to Mom's friends, Weyburn Pallitive Care, the Doctors and staff at the Weyburn General Hospital and the staff at Weyburn Special Care during her brief stay. Lorraine Audrey Towne
On April 30, 2008 Lorraine Audrey Towne peacefully slipped away at Tatagwa View after waging a courageous battle with cancer. Lorraine was born on January 6, 1927 on her grandparents farm in the Midale district. Shortly after birth it was learned that she was visually impaired and after many unsuccessful operations inevitably she became blind. She accepted the fact that her life would be a challenge and embraced it. She attended the Ontario School for the Blind located at Brantford, ON. Lorraine travelled by train to the school in the early fall and remained for a full term each year. While at school she learned life skills and how to be independent in a sighted world. She also learned how to read and write in Braille. She lived in Halbrite most of her life until, upon her parent's passing she took the first step to live independently by taking an apartment at the Legion Towers in Weyburn. She lived there for 21 years. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was an active member and through this association she gained many friends whom she considered family. Through the help of volunteers, Home Care, and friends she was able to lead a happy and productive life. Her hobbies were listening to talking books and music, crocheting, studying her bible, and chatting on the phone with friends. The phone was very important to her as she used this to keep involved in her friends' and families' lives. Lorraine was very interested in her community and the greater world around her. She had a genuine interest in other people, which made her a great friend to many. She had a good ear and lots of time to listen. She was a fan of old-time radio and enjoyed listening to talk shows and soap operas. Because she liked to stay up until the early hours, she loved the radio talk show called 'Nightcaps'. Lorraine will be remembered for her exceptional organizational skills in both her personal and home life. Her personal appearance was of utmost importance to her and her apparel and accessories had to be co-ordinated. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Mabel Towne of Halbrite and brother Douglas Towne of Halbrite, brother-in-law, Douglas Lawson, Swift Current. She will be fondly remembered by her older sister, Arlyne (Mrs. Douglas Lawson) of Swift Current, and brother, Bryan Towne (Elizabeth Duncan) of Halbrite, niece, Tazma (Warren) Beach of Ernfold; and their children Dayton of Medicine Hat, AB, Brock of Oyen, AB and Palmer of Swift Current. Nephew, Brent (Nadia) Lawson, Highgate, ON and their children, Jordon, Calgary, AB, Kyle, Highgate, ON, Marlin, Brenheim, ON. A celebration of Lorraine's life will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Weyburn. Mr. Andrew Svenson officiating. Interment followed at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. Honorary pallbearers are all who shared in Lorraine's life. Pallbearers are Warren Beach, Dayton Beach, Brock Beach, Palmer Beach, Dale Regnier and Paul Millar. Donations in Lorraine's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Peter Friedrichsen
(May 8, 1936-April 26, 2008)
On Saturday April 26, 2008, Peter passed away at Foothills Country Hospice, Okotoks, AB at the age of 71 years. He was predeceased by his parents Harke and Sophia Friedrichsen, son Grant Friedrichsen and many aunts and uncles in Germany. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his wife Faye (nee Matters) of 47 years of marriage, daughter-in-law Liz and grandchildren Natasha and Dirk, his daughter Cindy (Larry) Pickett grandchildren Meghan and Jordan, and his son Garry (Nancy), grandchildren Peter and Jack, his sister Karen (friend Peter), nephews Clause and Ralfe, sister Luise (Jurgen) nieces Gabi, Birgit and families, brother Johann (Siggy), and his many brothers and sisters-in-law and relatives in Canada. Peter was a journeyman cabinet maker who immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1957. Using his trade he worked his way across Canada. He met his wife Faye in Weyburn and were married in 1960 at a double wedding with Faye's twin sister Fern and Morris Hillstead with whom they shared many good times together. The majority of Peter's career was spent building many homes, businesses, hospitals, schools and churches in and around Weyburn. For the past 15 years he continued doing finishing carpentry in Calgary and finally in Ponoka, AB. He loved his trade and took great pride in building fine homes and quality furniture. He will be much remembered for sharing his expert advice and giving hands to help build homes and projects for people he cared for. Peter enjoyed his leisure activities of cottaging, camping and also traveling to some favorite destinations such as Germany, Mexico and Hawaii. In his spare time, he enjoyed staying abreast of news and world events, plus spectating many sporting activities. He even became a true Canadian and was a big fan of Hockey Night in Canada. Everyone loved Peter's sense of humor. He lived for laughing; often telling or taking in fun stories and jokes. Peter was fun-loving with his family, including his six grandchildren with whom he often shared his stories and humor. We will never forget his big smile and loud laughter that filled a room with happiness. We will miss him very much. A memorial service for Peter will be officiated by family friend Reverend Shane Sinclair at the Okotoks Snodgrass Funeral Home on Friday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. To help those surviving him, Peter wanted to encourage donations for pancreatic cancer research to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. Donations would also be greatly appreciated to support the operation of the much needed Foothills Country Hospice Society, P.O. Box 274, Okotoks, Alberta T1S 1A5.
Christena McLeod
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother on Friday, April 25, 2008 at the age of 88 years. Christena was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd McLeod; her parents, John and Winnifred Shiel; two sisters: Dorothy Marr and Gwen Robinson; three brothers: Elward, John and Doug Shiel. Christena is survived by her children: Judy McLeod, Weyburn, Peggy (Doug) Bukowski, Calgary, AB and their children: Lisa (Brent) Gacek, Chicago, IL and their son [Liam], Cindi (Kevin) Garren, Los Angeles, CA; Fay (Don) Schmidt, Weyburn and their children: Donna (Kevin) Medwed, Medicine Hat, AB and their sons [Logan and Colton], Scott Schmidt, Weyburn, and Mark Schmidt (Jill Dixon), Yellow Grass; Jamie (Anne) McLeod and their children: Chris, Erin and Kayla all of Saskatoon; two sisters: Beatrice Burke, Victoria, BC and Janet Bradley, Lethbridge, AB; one brother, Jim (Eva) Shiel, Grande Prairie, AB; two brothers-in-law: Garth (Lillian) McLeod, Peachland, BC and Gordon (Sharon) McLeod, Edmonton, AB; two sisters-in-law: Myrle McLeod, Regina and Corinne Shiel, Oakbank, MB; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Christena was born on the Storthoaks family farm November 7, 1919 and attended the Protestant Separate School in that area. She married Lloyd McLeod in 1948 and raised their four children in Weyburn. Christena taught school for many years in Trossachs and later in Weyburn. She was very active in the Grace United Church, Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Superannuated Teachers. We will always remember her loving and caring devotion to her family. Her positive attitude will forever be an inspiration. The funeral service for Christena was held on Wednesday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Rev. Mohandas Barnabas officiating. The active pallbearers were Scott Schmidt, Mark Schmidt, Chris McLeod, Neal McLeod, Ivan Ashton and Don Marr. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn.
