John Albert Selwyn Snell
On Thursday, January 25, 2007, John Albert Selwyn Snell of Weyburn, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 77 years. Predeceased by his parents, Decimus and Clara Snell, one sister, Lenora, one brother, Bill, brothers-in-law: Stan, Len Eric, Norm, Leo, Ken and Lloyd; sisters-in-law: Doris, Edna, Bertha, Marj and Mildred; and two nephews, Donald and Marc. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife and friend of 54 years, Marlene and their family: one daughter, Lynn (Rick) Drake of Shamrock, and their children: Maureen (Alan) Speidel and son Adam; Devon Drake and Aaron Drake; one son, Ken (Linda) Snell of Saskatoon, and their children: Michael Snell, Mark (fiancé Kelly) Snell and son Colton; sisters: Mabel Shepherd of Moose Jaw, Decima Fenske of Brandon, MB, Marj (Harral) Jukes of Moose Jaw; sister-in-law, Marion Snell of Regina; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John Albert Selwyn Snell was born December 13, 1929 at Briercrest and took his public schooling at Briercrest to grade eleven, then took his GED for his Grade twelve in 1976. Family was always a primary focus for John and he was eager to start his own, asking Shirley Marlene Clements to marry him when he was 21 and she was just 18. Marlene and John were married June 28, 1952 in Moose Jaw. They had their daughter, Lynn in 1953 and son, Ken in 1955. John worked his entire career at Dominion Fruit starting in Moose Jaw in 1949. He started with loading and unloading the railcars, working himself up through the company to the position of buyer. He work caused the family to move to Winnipeg, MB in 1959, then to Weyburn in 1965, Estevan in 1969, where he worked with Western Grocers, a subsidiary of Western Grocers, until 1976 when he and Marlene moved back to Weyburn, where he worked with Western Grocers, retiring in 1988. John was very active in the Young Fellows Club, then later, his involvement with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows became a lifetime focus. He served as Noble Grand in Estevan and Weyburn and was appointed Grand Master of Saskatchewan in 1995. He traveled the province those few years with other members and loved the work and the formal ceremonies. John took his membership seriously and gave 100%, volunteering for bingos, stew suppers, actively raising money for installation of specialized eye equipment around the province. He also served on the youth committee for several years, and believed strongly in their motto of Friendship, Love and Truth. John received the highest award given to an Odd Fellow, the Meritorious Badge, and in 2006 he received his 35th membership numeral. John loved history, especially family history and one of the highlights of his life was traveling to Devon, England, his parents' birthplace, and to visit with extended family and to Germany where his son and daughter-in-law were living in 1976. They had holidays closer to home too, meeting at weddings and campgrounds almost annually. They would go to Moose Jaw, Manitoba and even to Osoyoos, BC to meet with sisters wherever they were. Eagerly, he would travel out to the farm at Shamrock to reconnect with his farming heritage by helping out with harvest or baling, sneaking in the odd game of golf with Rick when he could. John took special pride in his grandchildren and then great grandchildren, always making great effort to attend all their events, whether skating carnivals, hockey and football games or races; as well as teaching them to play cribbage. John's body was the one thing that gave him grief, from being born with a club foot to having lung surgery when his first child was born to a heart condition in his 50's and Parkinson's disease for the past 10 years. He bore all of these challenges with dignity and strength, and it put a smile on his face to see his great grandson, Adam following him around with a pillow to make sure he was comfortable this past Christmas. The proud, quiet man that he was will never be forgotten along with his one line comments that made so much sense. He was a "numbers man" - working hard as a buyer but more importantly counting his blessings daily that he had been given so much in his life with his family and friends. Funeral service was held Tuesday, January 30, at 11:00 a.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating, and his granddaughter, Maureen gave the eulogy. Following lunch, the Interment was held at Rosedale Cemetery, Moose Jaw. All John's nieces and nephews were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Devon and Aaron Drake, Mark, Alan and Michael Snell, David Jukes and Alan Speidel. George Andreas Renas
George Andreas Renas passed away at home on January 29, 2007 at the age of 88 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Vi; parents John and Karoline Renas; two infant daughters Sharon Rosalind and Tammy; brothers Gus and Karl Renas and sisters Augustine, Julia, Molly and Olga. George is survived by his seven children Gerane (Tino), Sandra (Ian), Jill (Dave), Garry (Cindy), David (Bev), Judy (Don) and Brian (Pauline); 14 grandchildren Angela, Robert, Brett, Chandra, Matthew, Tyson, Braydon, Melissa, Michael, Trevor, Jason, Bree-anne, Alison and Kyrstin and six great grandchildren. George met Vi and married in Yellow Grass. They spent their early married life in Barrie and Brockville, Ontario where George served in the army. In 1947, they went farming at Yellow Grass and raised a family. In 1956, they moved to Worcester and operated a general store, post office and poultry egg farm where he won many awards for the best eggs in Canada. In 1965, they built a house in Regina where the children finished high school. In 1973, they moved back to the farm at Cedoux. In 1997, they returned to Regina into a condo but continued to commute to the farm every weekend. It wasn't easy to leave the land! George loved his politics and followed current events religiously on TV, talk shows on the radio and numerous magazines and newspapers, sometimes all at the same time. He loved to debate, which contributed, to his strong mind. A private family service was held. George will be sadly missed by his family who request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 2240-13th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3M7. Maxine McDougall
Maxine McDougall (nee Ketter) of Surrey, BC passed away Jan. 27, 2007. Predeceased by her parents, Nick and Elsie Ketter, husband John McDougall, brothers-in-law, Frank Maracle, Glen McDougall, and Earl McDougall. Maxine will be lovingly remembered by her two sons, Dale and Randy (Ann) and two grandsons Brent and Glen McDougall, all of Surrey; two sisters, Pat Maracle of Scarborough, ON and Sylvia (Murray) Hoium of Weyburn; nieces: Vicky Lockyer, Scarborough, ON, Tami (Kevin) Reichert, Kindersley; nephews: Loni (Faye) Hoium, Weyburn, Aaron (Cheryl) Hoium, Selkirk, MB, and Cory Hoium, Weyburn; several great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews, and many cousins. Maxine was born July 20, 1925 at Weyburn. She received her education at rural schools in the Weyburn area and at the Weyburn Collegiate where she took a business course. She worked for several years in the office at the Weyburn Creamery. In November 1945 Maxine and Johnny were married in Weyburn where they resided until 1970 when they moved to Kamloops, BC and from there to Langley, BC to be closer to Dale, Randy (Ann) and their grandsons. We will miss you each and every day and memories of our loved one will remain in our hearts forever and will never be forgotten.
Melvin Lloyd Kazell
Sept. 8, 1947-Jan. 28, 2007
Melvin (Lloyd) passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2007, at St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Melvin was born in Bengough, on September 8, 1947. He will be sadly missed by his family. Mel was predeceased by his son, Jeff and his sister, Viola Elaine. He is survived by his parents, Cecil and Viola Kazell; his loving wife, Della; daughters, Yvonne (Ron) Holowaty, Melanie (Paul) Maxin; son David Kazell; his four grandchildren; and sister, Dona Harrison. Sadie Zimmerman
Sadie Zimmerman passed away peacefully in her sleep February 5, 2007 in Weyburn, at the age of 93 years. Sadie Adeline Zimmerman was born April 5, 1913 in Benson. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Bridget Schmidt; her husband, Peter Zimmerman; two infant granddaughters, three sisters and their spouses: Gertie and Ulric Cote, Maryann and Baptiste Boire, Mae and Carl Hanson; two brothers and their spouses, Lawrence and Maggie Schmidt and Pat and Rosie Schmidt; and one son-in-law, Ernest Kot. Sadie is survived by her loving daughter, Carol Anne Kot, whom she lived with for the past three years, three grandsons and their spouses: Laverne and Cindy Kot and children: Chevy, Garrett and Grayson; Mike and Rhonda Kot; Nick and Janeece Kot; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends (young and old). Sadie was a very loving, caring and spiritual woman who prayed her rosary daily. She was an excellent cook, well known for her 'air' buns, cinnamon and coconut rolls and marble cakes. Many guests to her and Peter's home left with her special 'care' package of goodies to munch on later. Sadie and Peter lived in many towns over the years and wherever they lived, both were involved with the Church Community, Sadie with the C.W.L. in Ceylon, the Holy Trinity Altar Society in Cedoux and since 1970, St. Mary's Altar Society in Weyburn. Peter was with the Knights of Columbus. Sadie and Peter retired from catering at the McKenna Hall in 1993, they were both 80 years old. Sadie was well known for her quick wit and sense of humor. She had the uncanny knack of remembering birthdays of family and friends plus the weather conditions and other events occurring at the same time. Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt and dear friend, we'll miss you. Prayers were said Friday, February 9, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. The funeral mass was held Saturday, February 10, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn with Father Gerry Bauche Celebrant. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Pallbearers were: Laverne Kot, Mike Kot, Nick Kot, Chevy Judd, Garrett Jensen and Greg Barry. Hilda Madge Buckingham
On Monday, February 5, 2007, Hilda Madge Buckingham, late of Yellow Grass, passed away at the age of 83 years. Hilda was predeceased by her parents, William and Janet Paton; her husband, C. Mervin Buckingham; brothers-in-law, Joe Dorey and Bill Gowans. Hilda will be lovingly remembered by her family: Brian Buckingham of Yellow Grass, Sandra (Monty) Bissett of Montmartre, and their children: Meigen (Wayne) Schmidt and their children, Alexandra and Garret Schmidt; Lisa Weichel (Darcy Tendler), Jodi (Dennis) Kress and their son, Owen Kress; Jared Bissett; Diane Buckingham (John Skidmore) of Winnipeg, MB and their children: Rachel and Trevor Skidmore; Joan Buckingham of Weyburn, and her son, Quinlan Buckingham; Wendy (Scott) Stronge of Colgate, and their children: Derek, Heather and Kristen Stronge; sisters: Iva Dorey of Weyburn, Ruth Gowans of Kimberley, BC, Beatrice (Harold) McClinton of Penticton, BC; as well as in-laws on the Buckingham side, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Hilda was born December 19, 1923, and grew up on a farm at Yellow Grass. Her parents were of Scottish descent, her father being from Dundee, Scotland. Growing up in Yellow Grass, she did well in school and she liked to play baseball. She was the pitcher on the team and became known as "Hilda the Kid." She received her grade 12 education, then was employed at the C.I.B.C. as a teller. On November 14, 1947, Hilda married C. Mervin Buckingham at Yellow Grass United Church, and became a farmer's wife. She enjoyed gardening, keeping two gardens growing, one in town and one out at the farm. Hilda liked attending town functions and events, and she always felt that she had to do her part to make town functions successful. She was the treasurer for many town organizations, participated in the Lilac Women's group at the church and its many tasks, including singing in the choir. She was an avid member of the Legion and the Golden Harvest Drop In Centre. Hilda was a natural, self-taught artist and she performed the role of graphic artist, creating posters to advertise events. She always took the time to write to people, read and later took up quilting for her grandchildren. Mervin and Hilda did some traveling, flying to Europe and made the trip to Alaska, which she enjoyed very much. Hilda really enjoyed her grandchildren and scrap booked pictures of them before it was fashionable. She took great pride in her grandchildren's lives and special events. She also really enjoyed her friends and never wanted to miss any group experiences. Hilda liked to have fun, leaving her family with many good memories. She will be missed fondly by all she knew and loved. Funeral service was held Friday, February 9, at 2:00 p.m. from Yellow Grass United Church, Yellow Grass with Pastor Tim Lofstrom officiating. Active pallbearers were Jim Hansen, Don Baillie, Wayne Schmidt, Dennis Kress, Barry MacTaggart and Kevin Duxbury. Interment followed in Yellow Grass Cemetery. Gertrude Evelyn Walker
Gertrude Evelyn Walker, born December 24, 1911 at Foam Lake (Brombury), passed away February 2, 2007 at Weyburn, at the age of 95 years. Gertrude was predeceased by her parents: John and Matilda Tyler; her husband Alex; great granddaughter Taylor Hanson; three sisters: Edith Hallam, Alice Tyler and Doris in infancy. Gertrude is survived by her children: Ken (Ila) Walker, Nanton, AB, Ethel (Jim) Luft, Calgary, AB, Dave (Opal) Walker, Lethbridge, AB and Norma (Grant) Oberkirsch, Weyburn; 19 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; two nieces; two nephews as well as several great nieces and nephews. Gertie was born in 1911. She lost her parents at a young age, leaving her and her two sisters alone. This experience made these sisters strong, independent women. Gertie was best friends with Alex when they were children, later they became sweethearts, and they married November 11, 1934. In her later years she forgot some things but never Alex. Gertie and Alex took up farming, running the P.F.R.A. at Parkerview. They decided to move the family south when they were offered a job at Radville P.F.R.A. Later, Alex bought the Krassbeck ranch south of Ceylon and they ranched and raised horses until 1967 when they moved to Weyburn. In that time before they moved Gertie cooked for the P.F.R.A. a number of years and raised a huge garden. She lived in her home after Alex passed away and kept very active. Her health started to fail about eight years ago and she moved to Hilltop Manor. The love and kindness she receivd there for 6-1/2 years will be remembered by her famly. Thanks to Jan Thorn who was there for her many times. Alex and Gertie raised four fine children and survived hard times in the 30's. These hard times made Gertie strong and throughout the years she developed many wonderful characteristics. Generosity and compassion were two of them. Her door was always open to everyone and anyone who entered was treated well and always left full. She was famous for her shortbread, rice pudding, raisin pie and it has been said "No one cooked meat like ma." She was very innovative, she recycled long before the 3 R's, she invented micro derm abrasion, in the form of Comet; Ian was her first client. Her six butcher knives were the security system that always kept everyone safe. She sewed her aprons, and starched and ironed everything. The door was always open to her grandchildren. None of them remember receiving a spanking, and they all agreed Grandma was patient. Her bible was kept by her chair and daily scriptures were read. Material things were not important. Gertie was a lady in every sense; she will be missed, but not forgotten. Her family will all remember "Grandma" wearing a simple dress, apron, socks rolled around her ankles usually standing at the stove. This memory will live on in all our hearts. We will miss Mom each and every day and memories of our beautiful mother will remain in our hearts forever. The funeral service for Gertrude Evelyn Walker was held on Tuesday, February 6 , at 2:00 p.m. at Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Rev. Hazel Arbon Officiating. Ragna Helena Schnell
On Wednesday, February 7, 2007, Ragna Helena Schnell, late of Regina, passed away at the age of 91 years. Predeceased by her parents, Rasmus and Karen Johnson; her husband, Frank; her daughter, Doris Rast; her brothers, Leonard and Herman Johnson; and sister-in-law Peggy Johnson. Ragna is survived by her sister, Mabel Johnson; her brother Robert (Vivian) Johnson; her daughters, Janet Michel, Phyllis Olson (Sid), Karen (Dennis) Larsen; her son, Gary (Marlene) Schnell; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. Ragna was born in Colgan, North Dakota, USA on September 15, 1915. She grew up on a farm south of Oungre. On April 1, 1940, she married Frank Schnell and they raised five children on a farm near the U. S. border. After Frank died in 1958, she and her children moved to Regina where she worked at the Regina General Hospital for 22 years. Ragna's interests and talents were working with her hands. She sewed clothes, knit afghans, and made quilts. Ragna was involved with St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church, where up until a few months before her death, she quilted every Tuesday. She was very devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren. We'll miss her famous Angel Food cakes at every birthday. She'll be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Funeral service was held on Monday, February 12, at 10:30 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 1909 Ottawa Street, Regina with Pastor Lindsay Hognestad officiating. Leonard Neill Jenson
March 11, 1919 to February 7, 2007
Leonard Neill Jenson passed away peacefully on February 7, 2007 at 87 years of age in Columbia, Missouri. He was born on March 11, 1919, to Elizabeth and Andrew Jenson of Grassdale. He attended Meadowbrook School until Grade 8, when he and his younger brother, Rolly, left their formal education to assume responsibilities of their family farm. Len served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1939 to 1945 in the Aleutian Islands and Holland. In 1948, he married Alice Olson of Govan and they moved to the family farm where they raised their four children. He loved the farm life and their neighbors who surrounded and supported him. He was a life-long member of the Community of Christ and served the church as a minister for 65 years. He will be remembered as a faithful servant and a loyal friend. Leonard was predeceased by his parents, brother Jim and his sisters Laura and Violet. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Alice and their four children Neill (Sherry), Valerie (Gene Austin), Tim (Laurie), Marty (Jennifer), his grandchildren Chris Jenson, Stacey (Jenson) & Chris Whitrow, Melanie (Austin) & Brian Roberson, Jared Austin, Corie Austin, Tanis (Jenson) and Cliff Pierce, Mandie Jenson and Brooke Kelley and his great grandchildren Jayna, Jayden and Nathan Whitrow and Alexa Pierce, brother Rolly (Maxine) of Independence, Missouri and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral service was held in Weyburn, Tuesday, February 13, at Knox Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. Philip Alfred Hall
Philip Alfred Hall, late of Fillmore, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years on Friday, January 26, 2007 in the Fillmore Health Centre with his family at his side. Philip was predeceased by his parents, Wilbur and Esther (Manser) Hall, his brother Stuart, his sisters, Melba and Violet, and his loving wife of 60 years, Anne Marie (Walbaum). He leaves to mourn his three sons: Randal (Marlene) Hall of Fillmore, Winston (Evelyn) Hall of Fillmore, Thomas (Viola) of Saskatoon; two grandchildren, Jennifer Hall Hagel (Peter) of Regina, and Andrew (Ralanda) Hall of Saskatoon; and two nephews, George and William Mitchell of Calgary, AB. Philip was born in Osage, on February 5, 1913 and spent his youth in the Osage/Fillmore area. He played baseball in his school years and enjoyed the game all his life, particularly the World Series. Philip married Anne Marie Walbaum on June 22, 1938. Together they lovingly tended their farm all their working lives; four years at Kelvington and the remaining years at Fillmore. Philip enjoyed curling with his friends and neighbors. His passion was his family and his farm. He loved his horses, cattle and the vintage farm machinery he started out with, and had a particular fondness for Rumley tractors. Philip's funeral service was held at the Grace United Church in Fillmore, on Tuesday, January 30, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Heather Lea officiating. His grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew were the urn bearers. Interment followed in Fillmore Cemetery. Flowers are most gratefully declined.
