Violet Hazel McBride
Violet Hazel McBride (nee: Vaughan) died early Sunday morning, April 1, 2007 at the Fillmore Health Centre. She is survived by her daughters, Beverly and Laura, and by her sons, Kris, Randy and Steven and by her 12 grandchildren. It was Vi's wishes to be cremated and her ashes returned to Ontario. Jessie Johnston
On Tuesday, April 3, 2007, Jessie Johnston passed away at Weyburn Special Care Home at the age of 88 years. Predeceased by her parents, Jane and William Johnston; three brothers: Bill, Bob and Sam (Evelyn); sister, Jean (Leo) Bestrop; and by her husband Ellwood in 1991. Jessie will be lovingly remembered by her children: Allan (Bea) Johnston of Edmonton, AB; Ron (Linda) Johnston of Forget; and Isobel (Barry) Sample of Pangman; grandchildren: Mona (Adam) Brown, Doug (Zinnia), Chris (Lynn), Stan (Kara), Carrie (Darcy) Singleton, Lisa (Mark) Revet, Marcia (Jeff) Sedor, Jason (Jenn) Sample; great grandchildren: Larissa, Parker, Zachary, Braydon, Marcedes, Nicholas, Deana, Destiny, Emma; one brother, Gordon (Dorothy) Johnston of Creelman; sisters-in-law: Mary Johnston of Weyburn, Merle Johnston of Fillmore, Sally Johnston of Kisbey, Muriel Simpson of Medicine Hat, AB, Nora Bushel of Weyburn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jessie Johnston was born November 1, 1918 at Gap View, Sask, the daughter of William and Jane Johnston. She grew up with family and friends in the Gap View Community where the Johnston family were very close to the Sim Family, a relationship that lasted throughout her entire life. She took her elementary schooling at Gap View and High School at Fillmore, where the family had moved. Jessie then went to Normal School in Regina, and taught school at Miles school near Fillmore, Prairie Lea School at Creelman, Fornham near Handsworth and Hillier School south of Stoughton. On March 6, 1941, Jessie married Ellwood Johnston at Fillmore. Jessie lived with relatives and friends during WWII while Ellwood was in the army. In 1944 they rented a farm in the Maitland District where they lived until 1946 when they bought the Creek Farm west of Kisbey. In 1972 they moved to Kisbey to look after Ellwood's dad. In 1979 they bought their own house in Kisbey where Jessie lived until she moved to Coteau Place in Arcola in 2002. In December, 2006 she moved to Weyburn Special Care Home where she lived until her passing. Jessie was a member of the Kisbey United Church and United Church Women. She belonged to the Kisbey Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary, Kisbey Museum and was a member of the Kisbey Hall Auxiliary. She enjoyed scrabble, crossword puzzles, reading, gardening and doing handicrafts like knitting, crocheting, sewing, rug hooking, and embroidering. She also loved to travel and she always enjoyed a good joke. Jessie was a very caring and quiet person who loved her family dearly and will be missed by all. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. from Kisbey United Church, with Rev. Kathy Smith officiating. Interment followed in Arcola Cemetery. Marie Helen Rubin
Marie Helen Rubin, late of Weyburn, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 years on April 10, 2007 at the Weyburn Special Care Home. She was predeceased by her parents, Auguste and Agnes Rubin; her sister, Angela (Paul) Lamere; brother, George (Elizabeth) Rubin; and sister-in-law, Louise Rubin. Helen is survived by her two remaining brothers, Rene (Mildred) Rubin of Weyburn, and Joseph Rubin of Weyburn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was born January 30, 1908 in Weyburn, and was raised on the family pioneer farm in the Weyburn District. Her elementary schooling was received at Prospect School and two years at St. Louis Academy in Radville. She obtained her high school education at Weyburn Collegiate Institute and Grade 12 at St. Joseph Academy at Forget. In 1929 she graduated from the Regina Normal School (Teacher's College). Helen then went on to her life's career of teaching starting at Wauchope; then Forget Public, Prospect, Griffin, Macoun, Weyburn Assiniboia and St. Dominic Savio schools. Although she retired in 1965, after 36 years of teaching, she still remained active in the teaching profession with private tutoring and part-time teaching for another seven years. Helen was a long term member of the Catholic Women's League, Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan, St. Mary's Altar Society, and the St. Vincent de Paul's Senior Choir. Helen's life was devoted to her faith and church. She was a very organized person in every aspect of her life. Her students, nieces and nephews were "her children". Because of her special personality, she was the recipient of many practical jokes which she always accepted with dignity. She was a very caring and loving person, and a 'special auntie" to all her nieces and nephews. After retirement, she enjoyed her travels to the southern States and both eastern and western Canada. She had a full social calendar with family gatherings, church and community events, old-time music and dances. Helen will be truly missed by family and friends. Prayers were said Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. The funeral mass was held Friday, April 13, at 2:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father Gerry Bauche Celebrant. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Pallbearers were: Jim Rubin, John Rubin, Grant Rubin, Ken Rubin, Murray Rubin and Harry Lamere. Laura Kernot
Laura passed away peacefully on April 4, 2007. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Sorsdahl and Robyn Kernot; much loved granddaughter, Meritt Kocdag and her father, Gurcan Kocdag; sister, Vera Hansen (Clarence) of Weyburn; nieces and nephews. Laura was predeceased by her parents, Isabel and Lawrence Tedford; sisters, Blanche Fossum, Grace Turner and Evelyn Snelling. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 21, at 2:00 p.m. from Bethel United Church. Sharon Dianne Deegan
With great sadness we announce the passing of Sharon Dianne Deegan (Ruecker) on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at the age of 61, following a brief and courageous battle against cancer. Predeceased by her parents and grandparents, Sharon is survived by her devoted husband of 42 years, Doug, son Kelly (Darlene) and granddaughter Karalee. She is also survived by brothers Ray (Alma) and Reg (Lana) Ruecker, sisters Deborah (Lorne) Ferguson and Michelle (Gerry) Klatz, and their families, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and valued friends. At Sharon's request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sharon's memory to the Regina Humane Society will be appreciated. Joseph Carl Makelki
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joseph Carl Makelki of Oungre and Weyburn on June 27, 2007 at the age of 81 years. He was predeceased by his parents John and Helen Makelki and one sister Rose Dub. Joe will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Marcella; his daughter Valorie (John) Borgen and their children Chelsey (Matt) and Chris and great grandson Jase; his son Brian (Brenda) and their children Jasmine and Dylan; brothers George (Donna), Lethbridge, AB, Jack (Florence), Lake Alma, Chris, Chilliwack, BC, Charlie (Jeanine), Weyburn; his sisters Margaret Herberholz, Weyburn, Matilda Dutkowski, Regina and Katherine Ashworth, Weyburn, as well by many nieces and nephews, other family members and friends. Joe was born March 19, 1926 on Sec. 15, Twp. 2, Rge. 16, W2. When he was quite young he worked out for various farmers and so farming became his vocation in life. He enjoyed working the land, watching crops grow and bringing in the harvest. Shopping for machinery and going to auction sales, were great pastimes for him. He enjoyed looking after the cattle and especially calving time. Joe enjoyed driving the truck and hauling grain to town. Joe spent many hours in his shop. He was always trying to fix some broken machinery or inventing a different way of making something. In later years he took up woodworking, making things on his lathe, he made stools, shelves, planters etc. He tried to fill family requests for various projects. When bowling came to the Oungre Park, Joe became an avid participant. In winter Joe loved watching curling and hockey on T.V. As well as going to Chris' hockey games. Joe enjoyed family get togethers, helping anyone in need, short trips to visit or sight seeing and of course card games with family and friends. The grandchildren were a great joy to Joe. He loved to hear their "Hello Grandpa and Papa Joe" and see their smiles. Joe enjoyed going to watch concerts, ball games or any activity they were in. Probably each one of them had a driving lesson from "Grandpa". The funeral service for Joe was held at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Gerry Bauche officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, Tribune. The pallbearers were James Ashworth, David Makelki, Ken Young, Gerry Vasseur, Owen Vasseur and Barry Vasseur. Grace Endicott
On Monday, July 2, 2007, Grace B. Endicott of Weyburn passed away with her family by her side, at the Weyburn General Hospital, at the age of 93 years. Predeceased by her parents, John and Grace Robb, her husband, Clarence Endicott, sisters, Christina Hoeving and Minnie Myers, brother, Jim Robb; and by two sons-in-law, Gerald Callan and Wayne Fletcher. Grace will be lovingly remembered by her family, two daughters: Jeannette Callan of Weyburn and her children: Rodney, Joe, Wendy (Mark), Kelly (Chris) and Laurie (Reg); and Phyllis Fletcher of Regina and her children: Trevor (Jan), Derek (Shannen) and Lynette (Paul), thirteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Bryant of Kamloops, BC and Nellie Teesdale of Weyburn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Grace was born January 18, 1914 at Huronville, the oldest child of six children, therefore she helped raise her siblings. She attended West Osage School, receiving a grade eight education. Grace left home at the age of fourteen to enter the working world. She worked as hired help doing housework, farm help and various labor jobs. On November 22, 1937, Grace married Clarence Endicott in Weyburn. They lived in Weyburn from 1937 to 1947 when they moved to the Endicott homestead. They would often stay at York's in Weyburn, taking care of Alan and Mike while their parents vacationed south during the winter. They moved back into Weyburn in 1978. Grace was a member of the South Weyburn Homemakers for many years. She was a member of the Royal Purple, receiving perfect attendance for sixteen consecutive years. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and for the Hospital Auxiliary. Grace enjoyed bowling and the old time dances where she served lunch for many years. She liked to do embroidery work, quilting, sewing and crocheting. She also enjoyed all types of card games and tournaments. Grace was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Weyburn. Her most joyous feelings were those she felt for her family, each and everyone held a special place in her heart. She is now watching over us all. Funeral Services were held Friday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be Honorary Pallbearers. The Active Pallbearers were: Rodney Callan, Joe Callan, Trevor Fletcher, Derek Fletcher, Paul Konanz and Reg Blacquier. Reitta Tollefson
Reitta Tollefson of Weyburn passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2007 at the age of 78 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernie, parents, Lena and Norman Cross, her sisters, Bea Johnston and Hazel Pollack, her brothers, Alvin, Harold, Glenn, Nels and Roy. Reitta is survived by her children: Glenn (Debbie) Tollefson, Sherry (Neil) Jenson and Pat Johnston, all of Weyburn. Her grandchildren: Miranda (Brad) Spencer, Tyler Tollefson, Amy (Matt) Sanders, Chris Jenson, Stacy (Chris) Whitrow, Nicole Woodard and Greg Johnston, and eight great grandchildren: Jayna, Jayden, Nathan, Payton, Sidney, Haley, Ashton and Keegan. Reitta was born May 27, 1929 and was raised in the Griffin area. She attended Ideal and Griffin schools. After leaving school she worked in the Fillmore area as a housekeeper. She then moved to Weyburn where she worked at the Weyburn General Hospital. She married Ernie Tollefson on October 22, 1949. They moved to Talmage where they farmed until they moved to Weyburn in 1972. Reitta then worked in the laundry at Souris Valley until her retirement in 1994. Reitta's life revolved around her family and friends. She enjoyed playing Bingo and bowling. Reitta spent many hours spoiling her seven grandchildren. After leaving the farm, Reitta and Ernie continued to plant a large garden in the farm yard and they spent hours harvesting their produce to sell at the Weyburn Farmer's Market. Funeral Services for Reitta were held on Thursday, July 5 at Knox Presbyterian Church, Weyburn with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. John Robert (Jack)Domes
After a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, Dad passed away on July 10, 2007 at the age of 68 years. He is predeceased by his wife, Vangie Domes, his parents Carl and Lydia Domes, his sister-in-law Debbie Ahlgren and brother-in-law Bill Berg. Jack leaves to mourn his passing his children: Denise (Bill) Parrell of Regina, and their children Ashley and Ryan; Kimberly (Joe) MacNeil of Milestone, and their children Adam, Joshua and Scott; Quienten (Dawne) Domes of Weyburn, and their children Ethan and Tyler; his brothers and sisters: Eileen (Pete) Lychuk of Swan River, MB, Ruth (Dick) Gaube of Regina Beach, Randy (Tina) Domes of Keremoes, BC, Joyce (Lawrence) Hala of Saskatoon, Phyllis Berg of Bellvue, Washington, David (Jeanette) Domes of Qualicum Beach, BC, Sharon (Jim) Babcock of Saskatoon, brother-in-law Ted Ahlgren of Winnipeg, MB and numerous nieces and nephews and many other close relatives and friends. Jack was born on November 9, 1938 in Weyburn. Dad began his love of farming as he grew up on the farm 13 miles north east of Weyburn and helped his father Carl with various chores. As he grew up he enjoyed horseback riding and pretending to be Roy Rogers or Red Ryder - movies he would watch on Saturday afternoons in Weyburn. Dad moved from horses to horsepower when he was 16 and loved various types of cars - especially the Ford models. Jack met Vangie in Weyburn. They were married on April 4, 1964. After living in Talmage and Francis, they moved to Weyburn in 1972 where they raised their three children. Dad was a "jack of all trades" holding several different jobs throughout his life. At 17 years old he worked on the pipeline and then was employed by the Department of Highways. He worked as a geophysical surveyor in a camp north of Flin Flon, MB for three winters for the Hudson Bay Mining Co. Following his marriage, he was a grain buyer in Talmage and Francis for the Federal Grain Co. When the family moved to Weyburn Jack was a still and mash operator at Central Canadian Distillers. Jack's first love was the farm and he continued to work with his father during these years of other employment. He decided to make farming his main occupation in 1982, which he continued up until his death. The farm was his passion and helped him get through the tough times of his life. Jack was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Weyburn where he was baptized, confirmed, served on council and helped out during regular church services. Dad was a member of the Legion. As well, he was one of the founding shareholders of Price Rite Fuels. Dad had several hobbies. He enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and quading. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing his specialties - Johnny Cash songs at family gatherings. He enjoyed sports such as curling, hockey and baseball as a young boy, and watching the Weyburn Red Wings play from his season ticket seat. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play hockey, baseball, soccer and basketball. He enjoyed attending rodeos and auction sales as well as visiting with neighbors and friends over a cup of coffee. Jack and his wife Vangie spent many years traveling throughout the States and Canada. Dad was a kind, gracious and genuine man who would help his family and friends whenever he was needed. He had incredible will and strength during his battle with cancer. He continued to visit with family and friends - even up until his passing. He was able to seed all of his land this spring with the help of his son and partner, Quienten even though he was extremely weakened by cancer. He was very proud of his three children for all the accomplishments they achieved in their lives. The funeral service was held on Friday, July 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Weyburn, with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Active pallbearers were: Bill Parrell, Ryan Parrell, Joe MacNeil, Harvey Johnson, Ted Ahlgren and Dustin Babcock. His grandchildren were considered his honorary pallbearers. Interment followed at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. A heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Shwe, the 3rd floor nursing staff, housekeeping staff and the dietary staff of the Weyburn General Hospital for their compassionate care and support for Dad and his family during his stay at the hospital. As well, thank you to Ruby Schultz for helping Dad with his lunches and all of Dad's friends and family for the many visits while he was in the hospital. Samuel Robert Murray
Samuel Robert Murray, passed away in Weyburn, on July 8 , 2007 at the age of 84 years. Sam will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Vera Murray, Weyburn; children: Pat Murray (Jenny) and their children, Kimberley and Tasman, Australia; Ken (Glenda) Murray and their children Tracey and Tanya Wood, Ottawa, ON; Carla Murray (Stephen Bird) and their children Rob and Zac McClinton, Cold Lake, AB. His sisters, Olive (Earl) Grier, Moose Jaw, and Ruth Dorgan, Saskatoon, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Samuel was predeceased by his parents; Geoffrey Earle and Janet (nee: Liggett) Murray; sister, Elsie Reid; son, Robert Allen Murray. Samuel was born at Glasnevin, on November 9, 1922 to Geoffrey Earle and Janet Murray. He married Vera Brock on June 7, 1946 in Ogema. Samuel was a Flight Lt. During WW II. During his life, Sam was the plant manager of Canada Wire & Cable, consultant for Canada Wire International; owner of M & R Machines; grain buyer at Roncott and Griffin, and was a City of Weyburn council member. Samuel belonged to several local clubs: The Weyburn Royal Canadian Legion, The Kinsmen Club and the Bridge Club. He loved playing cards, especially bridge, square dancing and coaching baseball. A private family graveside service was held on Thursday, July 12 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Friends and family joined in the celebration of Sam's life on Thursday, July 12 at 2:45 p.m. at Captain's Hall, 122-4th St. N.E., Weyburn.
