Margaret Laturnus
Passed away: February 25, 2007
Margaret (Glas) Laturnus was born at Qu’Appelle, SK on October 2, 1911 to Marie-Eve Leboldus & Martin Glas. She was the 7th of 12 children. When she was 2 years old, the family moved to a farm near Vibank, SK. After completing her grade 8, she went to work in the fields stooking the crops for the neighbors. Margaret recounted many times, with pride, how good she was at stooking. In the spring of 1927, Margaret’s father bought land 5 miles east of Masefield. Margaret and her sister picked rocks, using two horses and a wagon. Margaret mentioned that they saw a lot of garter snakes, which they killed. To quote Margaret, “There was no fooling around those days, but we still had our fun days too. We went to dances on Saturday evenings at a farmhouse and then in a schoolhouse.” On November 5, 1928, Margaret married the love of her life, Wendell Laturnus. Together they raised 5 children, Helen, Rose, Dorothy, Leo and Pauline. They were also blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Margaret was a very talented and capable woman. She was able to grow the most beautiful flowers and her vegetable garden was always plentiful. She could look at a picture of a dress and create one exactly the same. She also made patchwork quilts and knit and crocheted many items. Her legacy will live on in many of our homes in the crafts that she created. At Christmas, she gave homemade crafts to the children and grandchildren. Margaret faced the many challenges of her life with determination and dignity. She cared for Wendell, when his health failed, and she was by his side day and night. Shortly after Wendell’s passing, Margaret’s own health needed addressing. She received a pacemaker which helped her to continue to enjoy life for many more years. Margaret remained in her own home until about the age of 91. She welcomed many visitors into her home and always had the coffee on. There was always fresh baking to be offered or she would retrieve some goodies from the freezer. During her last few years, Margaret lived at the Care Home in Ponteix and then at the Palliser Regional Care Centre in Swift Current where she resided until her passing on Sunday, February 25, 2007. She relied on her Catholic Christian faith to guide her when her journey became difficult. Margaret was an inspiration to us all and her memory will live on in us and will be treasured in our hearts forever. Margaret is survived by her 4 daughters and 1 son, Helen Dumont of Swift Current, SK, Rose (Ed) Rushinko of Regina, SK, Dorothy (Wilf) Zohner of Red Deer, AB, Leo (Viola) Laturnus of Val Marie, SK and Pauline Gardner of Swift Current, SK; her 24 grandchildren; her numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 2 sisters-in-law; and by many nieces and nephews.
