Peter Kouri

Passed away: January 1, 2007

We are sad to announce the passing of our father, Peter Kouri, in Swift Current Saskatchewan at the age of 93. Peter will be missed by many family and friends. He was well known in Ponteix and Swift Current for his successful business accomplishments and his involvement in many activities from bridge to bartering, and from golf to storytelling. Peter is predeceased by his wife, Aimee, his parents, Norman and Rose, his brothers, Ernie and Ted, and his sister, Dorothy. He leaves behind his children, Paul, Helene (Mike), Denise (Don) and Annette, his grandchildren, Tanya (Tim), Najla, Lise (Ches) and Rosa, his great grandchildren, Courtney, Ariana, Jaden, Alix, and Loa, his sisters, Margie, Lillian and Patsy (Byron), his brothers, Charles and Norman (Marie), and his sister-in-law Maryvonne Kendergi. Peter was born in Ontario in 1913. In 1921 the Kouri's moved to Ponteix and set up a grocery store: Modern Meat Market. At the age of 17, Peter went to Ottawa for 3 years. One of his jobs was a professional baseball player. Back in Saskatchewan, he again played pro baseball, this time for the Young Liberals. In 1935 Peter returned to Ponteix and made a living for a few years as a "fur trader", a middleman buying hides from local people. In 1937, "Peter Rabbit" as he was called, bought and sold 15, 000 jackrabbit skins, enabling him to reopen the family store, which had folded during the depression. In 1944, Peter left Ponteix to train as a soldier in Britain. At the end of the war, he met Aimee Kendergi, a student at Sorbonne University in Paris. There they married in 1946. They settled in Ponteix where Peter worked hard, with other family members, to make Kouri's Market a thriving enterprise. Peter retired in 1982 and enjoyed his passions for golf, bridge and getting a good deal, into his nineties. A Life Master, he taught bridge to many in the southwest. Peter and Aimee raised four children, providing them with all the necessities to succeed in life. In 1965, they bought a home in Saskatoon to encourage their children's university education. Their four children, all graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, live in Montreal, Toronto, Saskatoon and Vancouver. When the snow melts and the storms subside, the family will organize a celebration of Peter's life, complete with golf, bridge and storytelling, just the way Peter would have wanted it. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at a later date. Swift Current Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
