Mary Redshaw

Passed away: December 20, 2008

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Redshaw. She peacefully died on Saturday December 20, 2008, to be with her heavenly Father, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born in Shellmouth, MB in 1928. After being given up for adoption by her biological mother at a young age, Mary was shuffled through several foster homes. In 1944, George and Minnie Forbes of Mortlach, SK adopted Mary and she considered this the happiest memory of her childhood. Mary had 8 foster brothers and 2 foster sisters. Mary graduated from university and pursued a career as a teacher for 10 years in the country schools close to her home. In 1949, Mary married Howard Smith and they were blessed with their 4 children, Linda, Wendy, Bob and Rod. Mary was deeply saddened when she was predeceased by her daughters, Linda Sloan in 2002 and Wendy Gardner in 2005. In 2003, after living in Elbow, SK for 25 years, she moved to Swift Current to be closer to her youngest son and his family. Mary resided at the Prairie View Lodge where she quickly made new friends. Mary enjoyed gardening, reading, baking and cooking for family and friends. She looked forward to going to church every Sunday and taking time for her personal devotions each day of the week. Mary will be sadly missed by her family and friends, but it gives us great comfort to know that she was looking forward to being with her heavenly Father as well as reuniting with her daughters again. She is survived by her 2 sons, Bob Smith of Swift Current, Rod Smith (Angela) of Swift Current; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Elbow United Church, Elbow, SK with Lay Pastor Linda Greggersen officiating. The organist for the service was Ruth Rendall. “Amazing Grace” and “Old Rugged Cross” were sung by the congregation. Jack Cloutier

Passed away: June 27

John Everett Howard (Jack) Clouthier, of Swift Current, SK, passed away suddenly on June 27, 2006 in Fort MacMurray, AB.
Jack was born October 8, 1951 in the Ottawa Valley and spent most of his childhood in that area. Thanks to his mother using her money designated for a patio set to buy him his first set of drums, Jack started playing music at a young age – a passion that would last a lifetime. In Ontario he was in two different bands: Triad and Rocky Sands. Moving west in the late 80’s he filled in with various bands until he connected with Skip Neufeld from Bakersfield. The meeting led to a permanent position with the band, as well as a job at Neufeld auctions when they were not performing. Jack stayed with Bakersfield until 2001 when he joined Trick Ryder, a band based out of Moose Jaw, SK. He was on the road with the band at the time of his passing. Jack married Ruby Nickel on September 7, 2002. Because Jack’s career involved many days and weeks away, he truly valued his time with his loving wife at home. Working in the yard, gardening, fishing and golfing filled his spare time. Jack was also an excellent cook who liked to experiment and try new things. Although his children lived far away, there was never a prouder father and grandfather. “Let me show you some pictures” Jack would say. Jack is survived by his wife, Ruby; children from a previous marriage: Chantal (Stephane) Pharand and children, Jonah and Caitlin, of Hull, PQ: Melanie (Michel) Pilon and children, Samuelle, Evan and Ryan, of Dunrobin, ON: Justin (Natasha) and children Chloe and Savannah, of Hull, PQ; one brother, Bill (Wendy) and children of Tottenham, ON; one sister, Laurie (Gary) Rafter and children of Arnprior, ON. He was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents; his father, Esmond; his mother, Helen; one sister, Suzie; and by one brother, Mike.
A Service of Remembrance was held on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from the Eagles Hall, Swift Current, SK. Funeral celebrants were Kelly Bourdages and Skip Neufeld with music provided by Al Hudec and Trick Ryder. The scattering of cremains took place at the Duncairn Dam. In memory of Jack Clouthier, donations to the Swift Current Wildlife Federation would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Lucille Spence

Passed away: January 25, 2008

Lucille May Spence (nee Keeler) passed away in the arms of her devoted husband, Roy, at 8:00 AM, Jan 25, 2008.
I was born in Nonnington, Kent, England on February 5th, 1924. When I was 1 year old, I immigrated to Canada with my parents. We stayed at Waldeck with my Uncle Ern, then moved to Dad’s soldier settlement at Webb, where I grew up. While on the farm, I loved riding horses and rode my horse to school everyday. I moved into Swift Current to attend Swift Current Comprehensive Institute, which I graduated from in 1943. At that time I became a member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Swift Current. That same year, I was hired out of Commercial School by lawyer, James Ignatius Donnelly. I worked for that firm for 40 years, except for an absence when I followed my husband overseas to England. Roy Spence and I were married on February 8th, 1944. Roy was in the British Air Force, and while in England I worked as secretary for the City Treasurer in Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England. We also started our family over a six year period with daughter, Pamela, and a son, Roger. Soon after, we decided to immigrate back to Swift Current, Sask. Canada. We set up a home and I was able to be with my family again. I became an active member of St. Stephen’s Church, becoming a Sunday School teacher, the Church treasurer, and in charge of catering. I enjoyed the community life of the church and worshipping God. We had a wonderful family and many friends. Many joyful journeys were made to stay with my sister Ethel at the coast. I formed and participated as leader of the Ashley Park Brownie Pack for a number of years. We enjoyed dancing for many wonderful years at the Swift Current Square Dance Club of which my husband, Roy, and I were President Couple. I was an active member of the Swift Current Diabetes Association. I loved gardening, baking and cooking special treats for my family. Roy and I were married for 64 years and were still members of St. Stephen’s Church, although we participated at the Palliser Care Centre. I enjoyed all these activities, but was most delighted in spending time with my family and friends.
Lucille is survived by her husband Roy; a son, Roger, and his children, Jason, Kevin and Brooklyn; a daughter Pamela, and her children, Brian (Veronica), Rachel (Martyn) and Tracy (Julian). She was predeceased by her father, Percy W. Keeler, in 1961; her mother, Jessie Keeler, in 1966; a sister Emily, in 1913; a brother, Tom; and by her sisters, Ethel and Freda. Lucille was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She went home to her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 25, 2008 at the age of 83 years. Lucille will be dearly missed and remembered by family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at the St. Stephens Anglican Church in Swift Current, on Saturday, February 16th, 2008 at 2:00 pm with Venerable Rob Hardwick officiating. In memory of Lucille, donations made to the St. Stephen’s Memorial Fund, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
