Jacob Schellenberg

Passed away: January 16, 2008

Jacob “Jake” Schellenberg was born on March 3, 1922 to Jacob and Katherine Schellenberg of Burwalde, Russia. His family came to Canada in 1926 and eventually settled in the Cabri area. After completing grade 9, he worked for one year before attending Herbert Bible School for 4 years. It was at Bible school where he met Susie Nickel of Beechy, Sask. They married in August, 1945, attended Canadian Bible College for one year, and eventually settled in Beechy, Sask. Here he worked for various farmers for a few years before acquiring a permanent job at Pete Links Garage. His proven bookkeeping skills led him into the credit union system. He worked at Beechy Credit Union and completed his career as manager of Kyle Credit Union-retiring in 1985. It was while he was at Kyle, Jake received his grade 12 certificate. They moved to Swift Current in 1985. Jake accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 15 and was baptized at the age of 20 years. He loved to read his Bible and share what God was doing in his life. His passion was expounding the scriptures, whether it be by teaching Sunday School or preaching from the pulpit. He served the Gideon organization for 30 years. Jake loved life. He enjoyed boating, camping and traveling, but his greatest delight was spending time with his family. He loved doing puzzles and always had a good clean joke to share with his friends. On January 16, 2008 Jake went to be with the Lord at the age of 85 years. We rejoice that he is home in heaven.
Jake leaves to mourn his loving wife of 62 years, Susie, and four children: Gloria (Wes) Berg of Cochrane, AB, Nancy (Ken) Peters of Swift Current, SK, Angela (Alvin) Plett of Gem, AB, and Wayne (Josie) Schellenberg of Winnipeg, MB; grandchildren: Trevor Berg, Sheryl (Kelly) Plett, Curtis Peters, Cindy Peters, Jennifer (Steve) Driediger, Kelly (James) Klassen, Kim Plett, Debbie Plett, Janelle Schellenberg, Derek Schellenberg, Rachel (Curtis) Kornelson, Leanne Schellenberg; great-grandchildren: Danielle Berg, Carathy, Caleb and Arinn Driediger and Katelyn Klassen. He is also survived by a brother, Lloyd Schellenberg; a sister, Kathleen (Albert) Mix; sister-in-laws, Helen Schellenberg and Marie Craig; and many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Cliff Janzen and Rev. Cornie Braun officiating. “I Know Whom I Have Believed” and “It Is Well With My Soul” were sung by the congregation under the direction of Gerald & Janet Schellenberg. The life story was presented by Kirk Swan. Special music was brought by GloryBound singing, “Where the Roses Never Fade” and “Until Then”. Tributes were shared by Gloria Berg, Janelle Schellenberg and Robert Schellenberg with a picture tribute shared by Curtis Peters. Nancy Peters performed a piano solo, “Like a River Glorious”. The private family Interment preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, James Klassen, Curtis Kornelson, Kelly Plett, Curtis Peters, Brenton Reimer and Derek Schellenberg. Donations made to the Gideons International, West Bank Bible Camp or to GloryBound would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Victor Cornelsen

Passed away: January 11, 2008

Victor Cornelsen was born on July 23, 1919, in Herbert, SK to David & Sarah Cornelsen. He passed away on Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Prairie Health Care Centre, Cabri, SK. He was raised and worked in the Herbert area, until he ran away to join the forces. After his return from the war in 1946, he met his life’s partner, Mary Funk. They were married in 1947 in Herbert, SK. In 1960, he moved his family to Swift Current, SK: in 2003, he moved to Cabri, SK: and in 2005, he moved to the Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri, SK.

Vic served in World War II with the 8th Recce and then the 14th Canadian Hussar. He landed on Juneau Beach and fought to free Holland. For 40 years, Vic was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #56. After Vic returned from the war, his life as a truck driver began, driving for numerous companies. In 1967, Vic bought his first semi and started his own business hauling cattle for Lang Transport, until his retirement in 1989. Vic was well known and respected in the cattle industry. Vic loved to fish, camp and travel, when he had the time. Having coffee in the morning with ‘the boys’ at the Husky was a must. Vic’s trucks, cars and yard were always meticulous. Vic will always be remembered for his passion of clean vehicles.

Vic was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Vic is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; his daughters, Debra (Lyle) Thoreson, Cabri, SK and Shirley Schmidt (Garth), Webb, SK; his grandchildren, Sharleen Thoreson, Lanette Thoreson (Lane) both of Swift Current, SK, Stacey (Christie) Schmidt, Gull Lake, SK and Michael Schmidt, Webb, SK; his great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Cody, Jordan and Tehya; a brother-in-law, Frank Klippenstein; a sister-in-law, Ann Lansberry; 2 nephews, Dwayne and Dennis; and by a niece, Nola. He was predeceased by his father, David, in 1936; his mother, Sarah, in 1989; his step-father, Peter S. Martins, in 1972; a son-in-law, Richard Schmidt, in 2001; a brother, Elmer, in 1957; a sister, Clara Klippenstein, in 2004; and by numerous step-brothers and cousins.

The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Cliff Janzen officiating. The pianist for the service was Leanne McConnell accompanied by Sheila Braun as organist. “Amazing Grace”, “Beyond the Sunset” and “We’re Marching to Zion” were sung by the congregation under the direction of Lucille Wall. Special music was provided by Pete & Leona Braun singing, “Daddy’s Hands” and “Go Bring my Children Home”. The eulogy and life history was brought by Ed Lang. Tributes were shared by the grandchildren. The Royal Canadian Legion, Swift Current Branch performed the Honor Guard. The Interment was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Sharleen Thoreson, Lanette Thoreson, Stacey Schmidt, Michael Schmidt, Cody Keller and Lane Pisiak. In memory of Vic Cornelsen, donations made to the Prairie Health Care Centre Auxiliary, Cabri, SK would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Lester Hall

Passed away: November 20, 2007

Lester Cecil Hall was born on February 9, 1922, in the Doctor’s office in Morse, SK, to Cecil and Mildred Hall. On November 20, 2007, at the age of 85 years, Lester crossed over. Lester was the only son of three children. Lester and his two sisters, Marion and Elsie, were raised on the farm at Droxford, SK. In 1939, Lester joined the army where he drove munitions trucks to the front lines. In 1946, Lester returned home, safe and sound, to his family. Lester married Margaret Stevenson of Tompkins, SK on November 9, 1949. They had four children, Gayle, Robert, and the twins, Jessie and Janet. Lester later remarried on May 5, 1990 to Dorothy Ford. Lester was predeceased by his father, Cecil; his mother, Mildred; his first wife, Margaret; his second wife, Dorothy; and by his sister, Elsie. He is survived by his daughters, Gayle, Jessie and Janet; his son, Rob; his eight granddaughters, Leslee, Jennifer, Laura, Cyndi, Jamie, Kim, Meghan, Britney; his only grandson, Shaun; his great-grandchildren, Etana, Kiara, Adian, Daniel, Sabian, Abby, Austin, Joie, Katie, Rybbon; his great-great-grandson, Dagonie; his sister, Marion; and by numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, November 23, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the First United Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Christine Ciona officiating. The organist was Marilyn King. “In the Garden”, “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” and “With Someone Like You” were sung by the congregation. The eulogy and tribute was shared by his grandson, Shaun. “Amazing Grace” was sung and played by his granddaughter, Jamie. A special number “Tennessee Waltz” was played by violinist, Margaret Doyle. The ushers in the church were Chad Hehr and Trent Cundert. Honorary pallbearers were “All of Lester’s Granddaughters”. The Honor Guard was performed by the Royal Canadian Legion. The private family Interment was held at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery - Veterans Section, Swift Current, SK. For those wishing, donations made to the Alzheimer Association or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Katherine Schafer

Passed away: November 20, 2007

Katherine Schafer went home to her Lord on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, SK, at the age of 82. Katherine was born on August 1, 1925 in Kendal, SK to Michael & Elizabeth (nee Kuntz) Reiss. She left home to work for various families around the Mankota area and waitressed in Moose Jaw where she met many good friends. In 1947, Katherine married Xavier Schafer (1918-1983) and settled on his family farm in the Mankota-Hazenmore district. There, she worked hard raising and caring for their six children, Judy (Con) Vermette, Paul (predeceased 2004) (Holly) Schafer, Dennis (Lucy) Schafer, Vivian Schafer, Linda (Don Marshall), and Karen (Steve) Gloin, along with meeting all the demands of a busy country life. In 1980, Katherine and Xavier along with their oldest son, Paul, and his wife, Holly, ventured into business with the purchase of a motel in Swift Current, SK. Katherine diligently and proudly worked to maintain this establishment until her retirement in 1990. Katherine was a kind, compassionate, humble and faithful woman with a heart full of love. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she put the needs of others before her own to make the remembrances of her fond and cherished. She enjoyed spending time with her children; her grandchildren, Joel Vermette: Stephanie Schafer (Adam Brown): Elwood Bisskey (1980-2001): Xavier, Quinlan and Wildon Gloin; and her great-granddaughter, Hannah Schafer-Brown. She looked forward to Christmas celebrations and yearly summer get-togethers with her family which was always full of music making, food and laughter. Over the years, some other favorite pastimes included visiting with her many friends at the Co-op coffee shop and playing Canasta with her long-time friend, Amy, as well as with others at the Golden West Manor. The family wishes to thank Dr. A. Kielly, Dr. T.T. Khonje and the nursing staff that provided wonderful care to our mother during her stay in the hospital. A Prayer Service was held on Friday, November 23, 2007 at 7:00 pm from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Swift Current, SK with Julie Randall presiding. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at 10:00 am from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Swift Current, SK with Fr. Sathiadas Antony as Celebrant. The Honor Guard was performed by the Sacred Heart CWL. The Interment was held at the Mankota Cemetery, Mankota, SK with Fr. Juanito Vargas officiating and the following serving as pallbearers, Adam Brown, Joel Vermette, Quinlan Gloin, Stephanie Schafer, Xavier Gloin and Rose Reiss. In memory of Katherine (Kay) Schafer, donations made to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Derek Wiebe

Passed away: November 9, 2007

Derek Kurt Wiebe was born to Walter and Clara Wiebe on August 19, 1976. He was the youngest of three sons. Derek attended school in Herbert and graduated in 1994. He worked at various jobs starting with Austin Tide, REM Manufacturing, construction with his brother Duane and most recently he enjoyed working as an equipment operator for the RM of Morse. Derek was a talented, gentle, kind, and quiet person. He leaves to mourn his loving parents, Walter and Clara Wiebe; his two older brothers, Duane (Michele) Wiebe, Caleb and Noah of Regina, SK: Doyle (Sherry) Wiebe, Jenaya, Gracien, Reagen, and Alia of Three Hills, AB. He will be missed by his extended family, neighbors, friends and co-workers. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 2:30 pm from the Mennonite Brethren Church, Herbert, SK with Pastor Bob Capelle officiating. The musicians for the service were Henry & Vivian Thiessen. “What a Friend We Have In Jesus”, “Amazing Grace” and “There Is a Redeemer” were sung by the congregation. The eulogy was shared by Duane Wiebe. The Private Family Interment preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Herbert Cemetery, Herbert, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Bruce Wiebe, Cliff Wiebe, Steve Wiebe, Greg Siemens, Ken Froese and Kevin Epp. For those wishing, donations made in Derek’s memory to the West Bank Bible Camp would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Walter Smith

Passed away: October 27, 2007

Walter Smith, age 62, of Swift Current, passed away at The Cypress Regional Hospital on October 27, 2007. After a 3 year battle with intestinal cancer. He leaves to cherish his memory his child, Amanda (Ryan Harding), his grandchild, Skyler Harding, his sisters, Mary Smith, Ada Smith, Una Smith, Venice McGory, and brother Fred Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter is predeceased by his parents William and Emma Smith, and brothers, Ron and Sylvester Smith, and sister Evelyn Smith. Walter Smith was born in Chancecove, NFLD on October 12, 1945. He grew up in Chancecove with his parents and all 8 siblings. He attended Chancecove School from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Which after that, he spent more time at home caring after his siblings and helping his parents out dearly. Walter married Colette Johnson on March 14, 1986. They both met in Saskatoon, SK, in July of 1984, while Walter was working on the Canadian Pacific Railways on and off. Where in, on December 4, 1985, they gave birth to their one, and only daughter Amanda. They then moved to Alberta, and continued on their journey with a few short moves 8 years later. Where they ventured back to Saskatchewan. Walter had a very caring heart. He lived to help others, and make sure everyone he knew was not in any trouble. He couldn't be friends with someone unless they needed his help in some sort of way. He loved to be apart of his family, especially when his grandson came into the picture only 2 years before his passing. His favourite pastimes included travelling, collecting anything and everything, and spending time at home with his wife, watching Game Show Network and Judge shows. Walter was a great man who invested 99% of his life in family, and supporting his family. And because of this he will be sadly missed by all of them. The cremation took place on Tuesday, October 30, 2007. No formal service will be held. Close family only service on Friday, November 2, 2007. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Frank Haubrich

Passed away: October 18, 2007

Frank Haubrich, age 90, of Swift Current, and formerly a farmer and teacher from Hodgeville, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current. Frank was born on September 13, 1917, in Hodgeville, SK to Jacob & Apollonia Haubrich. Frank is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (nee Cummings); his children, Sheila Haubrich (Ernie Pihlstrom), Saskatoon, SK, Donna (Sherman) Dahl, Vernon, BC, Sylvia LeBoldus (Larry), Regina, SK, Russell Haubrich (Shella), Vernon, BC, Roger (Meredith) Haubrich, Sydney, Australia, Vernon (Elizabeth “Liz”) Haubrich, Hodgeville, SK; eighteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and by a brother, Rudolph (Elsie) Haubrich, Shaunavon, SK. The Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 2:00 pm from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Hodgeville, SK with celebrant Fr. John Foley. The organist for the service was Deb Waldenberger. “All That I Am”, “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Old Rugged Cross” were sung by the congregation. A tribute was shared by Russell Haubrich. Ushers in the church were Harold Haubrich and Harold Ebel. The Interment was held at the St. Mathias Cemetery, Hodgeville, SK. For those wishing, donations to the St. Joseph’s Memorial Fund or to the Charity of the Donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift current, SK.

Donald Sorensen

Passed away: October 12, 2007

Donald Earl Sorensen passed away on Friday, October 12, 2007 at the Kyle Health Care Centre. Donald, the oldest of five children, was born on November 12, 1912 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. He was brought as a baby to his parent’s homestead which was situated on the north side of the South Saskatchewan River, overlooking the river valley in the Saskatchewan Landing area. Donald attended the North Landing Country School for his elementary years and went to high school in Rosetown. Upon leaving school, he returned to work on the farm, raising cattle and growing grain. He worked long, hard hours, first working with horses and later with some of the earliest mechanical equipment. Some of these included the 1918 Titan IHC, which helped to break the sod on the Hudson Bay land south of Kyle, SK. On September 22, 1934, in a quiet ceremony in Swift Current, SK, he married Florabelle Reimche, of the Neidpath area. They made their home on the land located four miles south of Kyle where they raised one daughter, Shirley. They continued to farm this land until their retirement in 1972. In October of 1977, they built a new home in Kyle, SK where they have resided to this present day. Donald & Florabelle enjoyed boating and fishing during the summer months and after retirement, they took up camping and golfing. In 1945, they began spending the winter months in California where Florabelle had many relatives. In later years, they purchased a mobile home in Florida and for 19 years they spent the winters in the Bradenton and Sarasota areas. Many long lasting friends were made in these years including Erv Daley, the now retired Mobile Park owner, who still makes the much appreciated trips to Saskatchewan to visit them. His last visit was this past September, when he heard Donald was not well. Over the years, they have had many visits from friends that were made in Florida. Donald was predeceased by his parents, Chuck & Elsie Sorensen; one brother, Byron; one sister, Calla; two sisters-in-law, Barbara and Irene; and by three brothers-in-law, Benjamin, Ivan and Robert. He is survived by Florabelle, his wife of 73 years; one daughter, Shirley (Lyle) Van Buskirk of Kyle, SK; two grandchildren, Darcy of Vancouver, BC and Lynn (Ken) of Coutenay, BC; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jamie and Connor of Coutenay, BC; one sister, Joyce of Kyle, SK; one brother, David of Kyle, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Graveside Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 1:00 pm from the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Rev. John Barker of First United Church officiating. The life history and tribute to Uncle Donald was shared by Guy Sorensen. The pallbearers were Stephen Smith, Gerald Ericksteen, Guy Sorensen, Jay Sorensen, Orin Sorensen, Shawn Sorensen, Van Sorensen, Kim Sorensen and Donald Sorensen. A reception for family and friends was held at 3:00 pm from the Elks Community Hall, Kyle, SK. In honor of Mr. Donald Earl Sorensen, donations to the Kyle District Health Centre would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
