Charles Dodge

Passed away: October 10, 2007

Charles (Charlie) Dodge was born on March 17, 1910 in Stoughton, SK. He was only 2 ½ years old when his father passed away. His uncles built a small house in Stoughton for his mother and the three children. Charlie completed his grade ten at Stoughton School. When he was 15, he left school to paint grain bins. He worked on the farm for his uncle, Fred Burns, and he also fired engines for the Richardson’s. In 1930, Charlie came to Cabri to stay with Jim & Ella Young. Ella was Charlie’s cousin. Charlie worked for Oscar Thoreson and Jim Smith. In 1937, he went north to Gronlid to harvest, as there was no crop in the Cabri District. He earned $1.00 a day. In 1940, he came to the Humphries poultry farm to help build a double-decker poultry house. On January 6, 1945, Charlie married Kate Louise (Betty) Humphries, in Medicine Hat, AB. Their children, Carol, Ken, Keith and Carman soon followed. Charlie was a handyman’s handyman. He did many different jobs in the Cabri District. He spent two summers building round plywood bins for many farmers in the area. Over the years, many of these farmers reminded Charlie of the time he spent on their farms. Charlie drove the school bus for eight years, through deep snow and sticky gumbo south of town. He continued to do carpentry work and delivered eggs daily, while Betty and the kids kept the poultry farm a beehive of activities. It wasn’t long before Charlie had his sons siding houses, tarring and shingling roofs, as well. Charlie enjoyed playing cards through the winter months with his kids and the neighbors. He especially loved playing rummy with some of the regulars in Cabri. He won more than his share of quarters. He was a crafty crokinole player, a game which the children still play today. In 1972, Charlie and Betty sold the poultry farm, bought a house in Cabri, and moved into town. Charlie did carpentry jobs for another ten years. In 1982, he hung up his hammer, sold the land, and built a new house in Cabri. Charlie loved telling the jokes he picked up at coffee row, but he was terrible at it…as he often gave the punch line first. That didn’t stop him from coming home with more jokes for Betty, some of which were a little off-colored. Charlie never had a bad word to say about anyone. His quick wit was his trademark, and it continued up to his very last days. He was an excellent father who led by his example. His strong work ethic and determination to get the job done right were very evident. Charlie was liked by everyone, and will be fondly remembered by his family and friends. Charles Dodge leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 62 years, Betty; his children, Carol (Henry) Lebastard, Ken (Donelle) Dodge, Keith (Doris) Dodge and Carman Dodge; his grandchildren, Bart (Adele) Lebastard, Bruce Lebastard, Kimberly Dodge, Christopher Dodge, Jeremy (Andrea) Dodge and Kevin Dodge; his great-grandchildren, Genis Lebastard and Aline Lebastard; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred & Fanny (Burns) Dodge; his brother, Fred Dodge; and his sister, Irene Bradley. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 15, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Cabri Community Hall, Cabri, SK with Rev. Maxine Pirie officiating. The organist for the service was Lexi Culham. “I, the Lord of Sea and Sky” and “God Be With You Till We Meet Again” were sung by the congregation. The ushers were Barry McGuigan and Earl McGuigan. The Interment was held at the Cabri Cemetery, Cabri, SK. For those wishing, donations made to the Prairie Health Centre Auxiliary would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

Laura Janz

Passed away: October 11, 2007

“Her children rise up and call her blessed.”

Proverbs 31:28 Laura was born on January 16, 1914, to John and Susan (Jost) Priebe at Flowing Well, Saskatchewan, the fourth of eight children (five daughters and three sons). She was baptized upon her personal confession of saving faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church at Flowing Well, the church her father pastored for many years. On October 4, 1936, she married Edward (Ed) Janz of Main Centre, Saskatchewan, where they farmed and raised a family of nine children: Darlene (born in 1937), Linton, Darrel, Shirley, Orval, Marion, Dorothy, Viola and Sandra (born in 1958). Marion admits that after Sandra came along she prayed there wouldn’t be any more children in our family; however, it was to become very obvious that Sandra was no mistake. Dad suffered a debilitating stroke in July of 1969. In October, after harvesting was finished, Mom and Sandra moved to Swift Current to be near the Geriatric Centre (now Palliser Regional Care Centre) where Dad resided after his stroke. For the next year and a half, Mom faithfully went to spend nearly every day with him until he passed away in April, 1971. Linton provided her with a lovely new duplex (which he had just built) and she lived there happily and comfortably until September of 2002. He also looked after her in many other ways, and countless times drove her to shopping places, appointments and events. A special blessing to Mother was that Sandra was still with her for nine years after Dad died. After Dad passed away Linton bought the farm from Mom, but she continued to take a keen interest in the daily work and the crops. For many years she prepared abundant, tasty meals for Linton and whoever else was working with him on the farm at any given time. Mom’s home was always a place of hospitality for family and passers through. She was a magnificent cook and enjoyed serving meals to her family and others until well into her eighties. More recently she frequently took visitors out to restaurants for breakfast or supper. Fortunately, through all her years of widowhood Mom had the Lord to guide her and give her strength. Shortly after moving to Swift Current, she started attending the Church of the Open Bible. Over the next three decades she enjoyed the ministry and fellowship of the church, and she had many good friends there. She enjoyed reading her Bible and praying for missionaries, her family, and the needs of others. Giving financial support to various ministries and missionaries was also something she did generously and cheerfully. Mother felt deeply the loss of her daughter, Shirley, at age 58, in 2001; and her son, Linton, at age 62, in 2002. But her zest for living continued and she said at that time: “I’d like to live a little longer.” In the Fall of 2002 she sold the duplex (which Linton had bequeathed to her) and moved to Heritage Towers in Swift Current, where she spent three happy years. Two years ago it became evident that Mom should be in a place where some round-the-clock care would be provided. Her mind was keen, her memory was amazing, but she fell occasionally and suffered several injuries. So, in January 2006, she was moved to Heritage Manor in Herbert. She loved the staff there, and they loved her. She was always cheerful and thankful. Several months ago she was diagnosed with lung cancer. When the news was brought to her, she responded by saying: “Well, I guess I have to die sometime.” She seldom spoke about the matter and went on living in her quiet, kind and cheerful way. Mother passed away on Friday, October 11, 2007 at Heritage Manor with three of her daughters at her side. We are thankful that her labors and suffering are over, and she has gone to be with her Savior and Lord. We sorrow, but not as those who have no hope, knowing that we shall see her again. She was predeceased by her husband; one son; one daughter; her parents; and all of her siblings and their spouses except her youngest brother, Clarence, and his wife, Lorraine, of Calgary. Laura is survived by seven children and their spouses: Darlene (William) Braun of Swift Current; Darrel (Marianne) Janz of High River, AB; Orval (Georgetta) Janz of Winnipeg; Marion (Trevor) McGhie of Hines Creek, AB; Dorothy (Gus) VanHee of Calgary; Viola (Willard) Schmidt of Oyen, AB; Sandra (Gordon) Klassen of Swift Current; one son-in-law, Jim Middleton of Langley, BC; one daughter-in-law, Fern Rempel of Turn Hill, SK; seventeen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. Laura’s family sincerely thanks the compassionate staff of Heritage Manor in Herbert for their outstanding care. They truly went beyond the call of duty in ministering to Mother’s needs and to us as a family, especially in the last two weeks.

Donald McKaig

Passed away: September 27, 2007

Donald Arthur McKaig passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2007, at the age of 82 years at the Kyle District Health Centre, after a four-year battle with cancer. Donald was born July 26, 1925, on the family farm near Kyle, the second of four children to Maud (Langston) and William D. McKaig. Don worked on the family farm after completing his schooling and when he married Helma, they began to farm on their own. For many years they had a dairy, delivering milk seven days a week to the residents of Kyle. Eggs and fryers raised on the farm were delivered as well. Don especially enjoyed working with horses. Neighbour and friend, Ponto Larter and Don even tried their hand at raising chinchillas for a few years. Don was a committee member of the Sask Wheat Pool and received a certificate of recognition from the Canadian Wheat Board for 50 years of grain farming. In addition to farming, Don took on a variety of other jobs. He worked in Moose Jaw at Cushing Millwork in the winter of 1948, and for the DNR planting trees at the Saskatchewan Landing and other Provincial Parks, and along the Trans Canada Highway. He also worked at the Prairie Malt Plant in Biggar while it was being constructed, and built grain bins with Earl Akister, to be sold by the Co-op. In spite of all the hard work, Don still managed to make time for his favorite hobbies. From a young age, Don was very fond of music and received his first guitar for Christmas at the age of 10. His Dad had bought this gift from the local Pool Hall. Don was a self taught musician, learning to play many different instruments. He played with local bands as well. Every morning his dad would wake Don to listen to Montana Slim on the radio. It is from this program that Don learned to yodel. Grampa was willing to teach any eager grandchild to play on any of his instruments. Over the years, Don played for his own enjoyment as well as that of others. Don and Helma enjoyed square dancing for many years and traveled the countryside for a dance and fellowship. Baseball was one of the things that Don looked forward to each spring. He played for many years and coached minor ball as his boys went through the ranks. Don was a great pitcher and played at Leyton School, Kyle School as well as the Matador Farm ball team. This love for baseball and fastball was passed on to his children and grandchildren, many of whom are still actively playing today. Don enjoyed many other sports including fishing and golf. Don was the President of the Kyle Golf Club for a number of years. He became involved with 4H as a leader in 1957 and enjoyed the many years he served. Enjoying good health all his life, Don continued to actively farm into his 80th year. It was at that time that his health forced him to retire and him and Helma moved from their family farm and settled into their new home in Kyle in March of 2006. Don married Helma Hagemeister of Beechy in October of 1944. Together they raised six children. Don was a hands on father and very helpful with all aspects of parenting. These skills were passed on to the entire family, from his own children down to the grandchildren. Don will always be remembered as a kindhearted man. He was a gentle and quiet man. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will always be remembered with love and respect. Don is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, his six children Philip (Gail) of Penticton, Terry (Gail) of Grand Forks, Don (Rita) of Coaldale, Kevin (Barb) of Kyle, Carol (Bevan Bailey) of Kyle, Tim (Cathy) of Waldeck, 20 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and one brother, Bill McKaig of Kyle. Don is predeceased by his parents, brother Maurice, sister Violet and step-sisters May Kachur, Isabel White, Gladys and Rose Rogers, and step-brothers Lawrence, Robert, Gerald and Gordon Rogers. As a result of the compassionate and professional care of Dr. Gatzke and the Associate Family Clinic, Don was able to remain at home until July 2007, at which time he moved to the Kyle District Health Center. Those who knew Don were not surprised at his strength in his battle with cancer. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the entire staff of the Kyle District Health Centre, as well as those with Home Care, for the extraordinary care and attention they gave to Don and his family. For those wishing, donations to the Kyle District Health Center would be greatly appreciated by the family. A private graveside service will be held at the Clearwater Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Kyle Elks Hall on Saturday, October 6, 2007 from 12:00 – 1:30 pm to celebrate Don’s life. Please consider this your invitation. Dress is casual.

She was a sister to Gerry Harris, Norma Milne and Beth Kilborn; a sister-in-law to Mary Harris, Alex Milne and Bob Kilborn; kissin’ cousins with Elaine, Carol and Max Abraham as well as Wyatt Culbertson, Jan and Marnet Duthie and many more; an auntie to Terry, Doug, Jack, Harvey and Jimmy Harris: Barb Hnatiuk, Judy Dolter, Clint and Brian Gossard: Alan and Brian Puckett, Tanya and Brenda Kilborn. Jean was a wife to Phil; a mother to Laurie, Kelly, David and Neil; a mother-in-law to Ron Palmer, Tracey Gossard (nee Scott), and Liz Gossard (nee Sutton); and a grandmother to Alexa, Sydney, Phillip, Becky, Kathryn, Krisanne and Danielle. She also appreciated her great friends and neighbors. Jean was born, raised and lived her entire life in Cabri, SK. Both Jean and Phil were born in Cabri, seventy-one years ago, five days apart, in November, 1936, the middle of the Dirty Thirties. So, needless to say, she knew the values of hard work, cooperation, sharing and friendship. The high school sweethearts were married on July 26th, 1958. Jean enjoyed her short teaching career, especially teaching grade one students to read. We all learned a lot from Jean. She encouraged us to be the best that we could be. She was a great listener, if you told her something she took it in and remembered it. Jean enjoyed her curling friends, church and choir groups, card playing chums, boating buddies, and traveling companions. Hers was a fun journey. We will definitely miss her, but a little bit of Jean lives on in every one of us here today. She recently told Phil that she wasn’t afraid of dying-- just so sorry that she was going to miss all of her grandkids wonderful life experiences, the ‘fun stuff.’ Let’s celebrate Jean’s life journey! Let’s try not to be too sad, instead remember her love of fun, family and friends. Let’s remember her and learn from her. Laurie’s Lament: Birth and Death, Opposite ends of the rope, of the circle of life! Intertwined, inter-connected. Old endings, new beginnings. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 1, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Cabri United Church, Cabri, SK with Rev. Maxine Pirie officiating. The pianist for the service was Norma Horvey. “Come In, Come In and Sit Down”, “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry”, “I Danced In the Morning”, “She Comes Sailing on the Wind” and “One More Step Along the World I Go” were sung by the congregation. Scripture readings were read by Family. The ushers in the church were Darren Levorson and Brad Levorson. The private family Interment Service will take place at a later date. In memory of Mrs. Jean Gossard, donations made to the Prairie Health Centre Auxiliary or to the Cabri United Church would be appreciated by the family. Anna Dyck
Passed away: September 16, 2007

Anna (Ginter) Dyck passed away at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK on Sunday, September 16, 2007 at the age of 84 years. Anna was born on October 14, 1922, at Chortitz, SK, the first child of Abraham & Annie Ginter. Life was difficult and the farm and home needed as many helping hands as possible. As a result, upon completion of her grade 3 she had to quit school to work at different places and at various jobs, including as a farm helper, as a waitress, and working at the Drug Store. Anna was baptized in 1943 in the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church. The commitment to Jesus Christ and to the church that she made that day was one she was loyal to for the rest of her life. Her faith mattered deeply and worshiping with other Christians was always important to her. Once she lived at Golden West Manor, the Sunday afternoon services were special to her and she attended faithfully. On July 18, 1943, Anna married Diedrich Dyck and they shared 50 years together. She recalls that all they had when they got married was $3 and a bicycle. But it was enough for two people who loved each other and who knew the meaning of hard work. Before settling in Swift Current they lived and worked on farms in the Vanguard and Neville areas. Diedrich’s death 14 years ago was very sudden and she grieved his passing and found the transition to living without him difficult. But she carried on. Anna was a good housekeeper. In fact, her family was inclined to call her fussy—a perfectionist. Every thing had a place and had to be kept in its place. Even cards, when playing a card game, had to be put on the table, just so, all lines parallel. She endured a lot of teasing about this but was always good natured, and could tease back. She loved spending time with people and could spend whole evenings playing games. Winning and losing didn’t matter, it was playing and being with family and friends that counted. Some of Anna’s hobbies and interests were gardening, traveling and visiting with family and friends. Family gatherings were of great importance to her. She made sure that her brothers and sisters and their spouses got together regularly, and was quite prepared to cook a turkey dinner for the whole lot. She will be missed when the family gathers. Her friends will miss her as well, noticing an empty spot when they visit, play games, or go to Tim Hortons. Anna is survived by her 3 brothers, Bill (Helen) Ginter, Isaac (Hilda) Ginter and Jake (Ann) Ginter; her 3 sisters, Kaye (Bill) Neustaeter, Margaret Janzen and Stella (Frank) Dyck; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Diedrich Dyck in 1993; her parents, Abraham & Annie Ginter; by 2 sisters; and 3 brothers. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, September 21, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Zion Mennonite Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastors Ray & Sylvia officiating. The organist for the service was Patricia Orthner. “What a Friend We Have In Jesus”, “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art” were sung by the congregation. The life history was read by Pastor Sylvia Friesen. The ushers in the church were Willard Ginter and Dennis Dyck. The Interment was held at the Schantzenfeld Cemetery, Schantzenfeld, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Fred Dyck, Larry Dyck, Lloyd Janzen, Gord Neustaeter, Debbie Hildebrandt and Bill Ginter. In memory of Mrs. Anna Dyck, donations made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Lung Association or to the Charity of the Donor’s Choice would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
