Passed away: February 11, 2007
Mrs. Katherine (Tena) McLachlan, age 93, passed away at the Palliser Regional Care Centre on Sunday, February 11, 2007. She spent four months in the Herbert Nursing Home before moving to Swift Current on January 31, 2007. Tena was born on September 18, 1913 at Main Centre, SK to David & Agnes Wiebe. She was the eldest of 11 children, five brothers and five sisters. She took her schooling at the Turnhill School, later moving to Beechy, SK and then to Herbert, SK in 1928. Due to her mother’s illness, she quit school at the age of fifteen to help at home. In 1934, Tena married William (Willy) McLachlan, who had two children, Evelyn and Don. In September 1935, Tena embarked on a life-long course of being a bible student when she was baptized as on of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She loved the bible and enjoyed talking to others about the hope of a resurrection to a paradise earth where there would be no sickness, sorrow or death. Tena spent her married life on their farm and ranch, south of Herbert, and retired to Herbert in 1968. After Willy’s death, Tena made her home in Swift Current. She loved to travel and when the colds winds would blow, she would make her way to warmer spots in the United States. The highlight of her travels was a trip to Israel. She loved to tell everyone about all the sights she saw. Tena is survived by her step-daughter, Evelyn (Desmond) Yake, of Swift Current, and their children: Bonnie, Ron and Collette; her step-son, Don (Lillian) McLachlan, of Swift Current, and their children: Wayne, Wesley, Grant and Beverley; numerous step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; and also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Agnes, in 1945; her father, David Wiebe, in 1958; her husband, Willy, in 1971; her mother, Agnes Wiebe, in 1990; her brothers, John and David, both in 2005. The family would like to thank the staff of the Herbert Nursing Home and the Palliser Regional Care Centre in Swift Current, for their wonderful care and compassion. A special thank you to Dr. Steenberg of Swift Current and to Dr. Kassett of Herbert, for their excellent care of Mother. The family would also like to express their gratitude to everyone who visited their Mother, brought her gifts of food, or were a source of strength and encouragement to her during her illness. The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Swift Current, SK with Wayne McLachlan presiding. Radiuk - Mr. John Radiuk, age 80, of Swift Current, SK and formerly of the Kelstern district, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK, with his family by his side. John is survived by his loving wife, Martha, of 37 years; his daughter, Carolynn (Randy) Daniel of Swift Current, SK, her children, Jeff (Jeanette) Haubrich - Kenzie, Hayden and Taryn of Mossomin, SK and Rachelle (Matt) Nicholson - Justyn, Michael, Mickalie of Swift Current, SK; his son, Dale (Bette) Zacharias of Swift Current, SK, their children, Sheri (Darrin) Wotypka - Cole and Ava of Swift Current, SK and Cory (Brandi) Zacharias of Swift Current, SK; his sisters, Olga (Albert) Hostin of Regina, SK and Ann Spee of Vancouver, BC; his brothers, Peter (Roxine) Radiuk of Vancouver, BC and Bill (Carolyn) Radiuk of Moose Jaw, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter & Annie Radiuk; a sister, Mary Boyko; a brother, Steve Radiuk; a brother-in-law, Michael Spee; and a nephew, Mark Spee. John was born on the family farm at Kelstern, SK on December 23, 1926. He attended school at Kelstern and then pursued a successful farming career. He married Martha Zacharias on February 28, 1970 in Swift Current, SK. John & Martha farmed until 2004. Beginning in 1985, they enjoyed summers on the farm and winters in their new home in Swift Current. John enjoyed going to auction sales at Neufeld’s Auction, walking to the Mall for coffee row, playing cards with friends, spending time with his family and tinkering: making something out of nothing. One of his favorite sayings was, “Take care, because we care”. The Prayer Service was held on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Swift Current, SK. The Funeral Mass was held on Friday, May 11th, 2007 at 11a.m from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Swift Current, SK with Father Sathiadas Antony as Celebrant. The ushers in the church were Harold Ebel and Melvin Knelsen. Honorary pallbearers were “All of John’s friends”. The private family Interment was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers, Cory Zacharias, Jeff Haubrich, Matt Nicholson, Darrin Wotypka, Justyn Nicholson and Kenzie Haubrich. In John’s memory, donations to the Alzheimer Association of Saskatchewan Inc., Suite 224, 408 Broad St, Regina, Sask. S4R 1X3, would be appreciated by the family. Winifred Sylvester
Passed away: May 23, 2007
Sylvester, Winifred, age 86, of Swift Current, SK, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current. Winifred is survived by a son, Gary (Linda) Sylvester; 5 grandchildren, Susie, Pam (Greg) Klassen, Cory, Roxanne (Wyatt) Hughes, Jeff; 4 great-grandsons, Dustin, Luke, Branden, Colton; a sister-in-law, Ella Sutherland of Rimby, AB; a brother-in-law, Mac McAdam of Calgary, AB; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, William (1954) & Maryann (1948) Sutherland; her husband, Albert (2001); a daughter, Lorraine Oliver (1994); 4 sisters, Emily, Etta, Chrissie, Marion; 2 brothers, Dave, Bob; parents-in-law, George (1991) & Ethel (1997) Sylvester; 3 brothers-in-law, Dan, Stan, Norman; and a sister-in-law, Myrtle Sutherland. Winifred - the second youngest of seven children, was born on March 22, 1921 to William & Maryann Sutherland, Ponteix, SK. She grew up on the family farm, 14 miles south of Ponteix. She received her formal education in the Westerliegh School District, 10 miles south of Ponteix, until she reached high school. Then she took correspondence courses at home for 2 years. In her youth, Winifred, enjoyed playing baseball and one of her most fondest memories was pitching for their ball team, which was called “Glenvern Stars”. She spent many Sundays and Sports Days competing against community ball teams. She worked out at several places, until she married Albert Sylvester on December 23, 1943. They moved to the Fairy Lake district where they continued farming until 1976, when they moved into Cadillac. She was kept very busy being janitor for the United Church (15 years), the Hall (9 years) and the Rink (9 years). She belonged to the U.C.W., the 50-50 Seniors Club, members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ladies Auxiliary. She also served on the T & C Recreation Board (catering) for several years which she enjoyed very much. Winifred enjoyed her houseplants and flowers, reading, gardening, walking, knitting and crocheting. She knitted about 15 siwash sweaters for others and also crocheted afghans for each of her grandchildren. Winifred and Albert both enjoyed dancing and took in all the dances until Albert had a stroke in 1991. They moved to an apartment in Swift Current in 1994, where she remained until her health no longer allowed her to live on her own. She spent her remaining time at the Palliser Regional Care Centre. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses of the Cypress Regional Hospital and also to all the staff at the Palliser Regional Care Centre. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Swift Current Funeral Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Harold Benjamin officiating. The pianist for the service was Arlene Olson. “Amazing Grace”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art” were sung by the congregation. A tribute to ‘grandma’, written by Jeff, and the life history were both tread by Rev. Harold Benjamin. Honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Winifred’s life”. The Interment was held at the Cadillac Cemetery, Cadillac, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Andre St. Jacques, Dennis Robinson, Donald Fischer, Terry Cooper, Wyatt Hughes and Branden Hughes. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
Mary Unger
Passed away: February 11, 2007
Mary Unger, age 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2007, at the Swift Current Care Centre. Mary was born September 27, 1927 on the family farm near Rosengard, SK to Abe & Anna Wiebe. Mary was the second youngest of 11 children. She married Jacob Unger on July 9, 1950. They lived on the farm near McMahon until moving to the farm in the Burnham district in 1965. Jake & Mary celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in July 1975. Jake passed away in less than a year after that on June 17, 1976. Mary continued to live on the farm until her move to Swift Current in the early 1980’s. Due to poor health, the Swift Current Care Centre became Mary’s home in 2002 and she resided there until her passing. Mary had a passion for her garden and she loved her flowers. She was a member of the Burnham WI for many years. Music was also a big part of her life. She especially enjoyed playing her guitar and singing. Mary is lovingly remembered by her children; Brian (Delores) Unger, Camie (Sid) Katzman, Norman (LeAnne) Unger, Wanda (Bob) Bazinet; her Grandchildren, Kristyne & Matthew Bazinet, Samaya & Thomas Katzman, Lesley & Lindsey Unger; a sister, Tina Letkeman; brothers, Pete (Nettie) Wiebe, Henry (Marion) Wiebe; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben Wiebe, Isaac Dyck, John Krahn, Mary Wiebe, Barbara Wiebe, Anne & Raymond Knowlton, Agatha Dyck, Helen Gerbrandt, Cornie & Liz Unger, Ernie & Donna Unger, Ike Unger, Peter & Agnes Unger; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jake; her parents, Abe & Anna Wiebe; her mother and father-in-law, Herman & Maria Unger; her sisters, Annie, Agnes, Lena, Margaret, Elizabeth; her brothers, Abe, Bill; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary & Jake Giesbrecht, John & Nettie Unger, Kay Friesen, Moya Unger, Herman Unger, Vincent Dyck, Jake Gerbrandt and John Schellenberg. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Swift Current Care Centre for all the love and care that was given to Mom over the years. The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. from the Swift Current Funeral Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Alvin Buhler officiating. The organist for the service was Arlene Olson with the congregation singing, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “Where the Roses Never Fade”. The ushers were Joe Unger and Harvey Wiebe. The Interment Service preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with Mary Unger’s family serving as pallbearers. Morgan Gerbrandt
Passed away: April 17, 2007
Morgan Marie Gerbrandt passed away at the family farm, north of Waldeck, SK, on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at the age of 12 years. Morgan was born on July 12, 1994 at the Swift Current Union Hospital, to Charles & Tracey Gerbrandt. At the young age of 3, she was diagnosed with autism. She attended the Waldeck School and was in grade 7. Morgan was a cooperative girl who preferred to be by herself. She loved the water and was an excellent swimmer. Her favorite treats were chips and Bits ‘n Bites. Her love for Walt Disney movies and characters were evident by her ever present Mickey Mouse. Morgan leaves to cherish her memory her parents, Charles & Tracey Gerbrandt; her brothers, Dustin Parker and Jason Gerbrandt; her grandparents, Ann Gerbrandt of Swift Current, SK, Elaine & Gordon Parker of Medicine Hat, AB and Jack & Fanny Guckert of Medicine Hat, AB; her uncles, aunts and cousins, Harold & Monica Gerbrandt of Waldeck, SK and their children, Danica, Juanita and Andrew: Garry & Christine Gerbrandt of Swift Current, SK and their children, Kimberley and Ryan: Verna & John Barabe of Emerald Park, SK and their children, Madison, Alexandra, Mitchell and Conner: Sharon Forget of Swift Current, Sk and her children, Kalista and Keely: Shannon & John Carleton of Swift Current, SK and their children, Tiffany and Trisha: Cam & Christine Parker of Camrose, AB and their children, Bryanna and Sierra. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Archie Gerbrandt, December of 2006.The Funeral Service was held on Monday, April 23, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Church of the Open Bible, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Sid Chalmers officiating. The organist for the service was Shirley Deobald with special music provided by Servant of the Word singing, “I Can Only Imagine”. A poem entitled, “My Little Morgie” was read by Monica Gerbrandt. John Barabe shared the life history and tributes from the cousins. A Power Point presentation and tributes was introduced and presented by Harv Martinez on behalf of the Waldeck School & Staff, as well as some of her classmates also sharing tributes. “Amazing Grace”, “Jesus Loves Me” and “You Are My Sunshine” were sung by the congregation. Honorary Pallbearers were “All of Morgan’s Classmates”. The ushers in the church were Robert Klassen, Stan Klassen and Ken Strauch. The Interment was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Harold Gerbrandt, Garry Gerbrandt, Cam Parker, John Carleton, John Barabe and Brent Miller. Wilbert Dyck
Passed away: April 1, 2007
Wilbert Merlin Dyck passed away on April 1st, 2007 in Red Deer, AB. Wilbert was born on April 17th, 1928 in Swift Current, SK. He was raised in the Rockside school district, northwest of Herbert. He attended school there until the end of grade six. Wilbert then started his career as a farmhand for various farmers in the area. Then one day, while in Herbert looking for a job, he met a farmer named Ron Simons, who was looking for a farmhand. During his employment for Ron, Wilbert met Helen. Wilbert and Helen were married in the spring of 1949. In the fall of 1950 they moved to the Macrorie area, close to Outlook. It was there that they started their family with the birth of Dennis in 1951. Ken in 1953 and Brian in 1955 completed the family after a move to Lucky Lake. Many moves followed over the years until 1965 when the family settled in Moose Jaw. Wilbert’s longest duration of employment was for the City of Moose Jaw for 10 years, from 1969 to 1979. In 1979, he had the opportunity to be part owner of Swift Machine and Welding with his son Ken. Wilbert then retired in October 1987, at which time he was worn out from working. Once retired, he took up many hobbies, including building radio control airplanes and horse drawn wagon replicas. He enjoyed his retirement with Helen until her passing in February 2003. In August 2003, he married Pearl Funk and moved to Red Deer, AB. Wilbert is survived by his wife of 3 ½ years, Pearl; his 3 sons, Dennis (Shawn) Dyck, Ken (Evelyn) Dyck, and Brian (Darlene) Dyck; his 5 Grandchildren, Melynda (Brent) Turner, Cheri (Michael) Nielsen, Kevin (Jenny) Dyck, Ashley Martin, and Jordan (Alexandra) Dyck; his 5 Great-grandchildren; his brothers and sister, Vernon (Toby) Dyck, Elmer (Eva) Dyck, John (Miriam) Dyck, Leona (Leonard) Giesbrecht, and Alden (Mary) Dyck; and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is predeceased by his first wife, Helen; and his parents, John CK and Justine Dyck. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, April 9, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Cliff Janzen officiating. The pianist for the service was Leanne McConnell with special music brought by the Braun Trio singing, “In the Garden” and “Precious Savior”. Tributes were shared by Ken Dyck, Melynda Turner and Cheri Nielsen with Brian Dyck reading the obituary. “Under His Wings” and “When We All Get to Heaven” were sung by the congregation under the direction of Menno Martens. The ushers in the church were John Thiessen, Lucille Wall, Edith Janzen and Ed Froese. The Interment was held at the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Kevin Dyck, Carl Siemens, Bob Siemens, Jordan Dyck, Michael Nielsen and Brent Turner. Mildred McDowell
Passed away: April 5, 2007
Mildred Lillis McDowell went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 5, 2007 at the Gull Lake Special Care Home. Millie was born on August 19, 1915 near Tompkins, SK, to Elmer and Jennie Halliday. She married Jim (Ellis) McDowell in 1935, in Swift Current and they farmed south of Tompkins. She leaves to mourn her husband, Jim (Ellis) of 72 years; her children and grandchildren, Doug and wife, Betty, Medicine Hat, AB (Blair and Mark), Mavis and husband, Dave Hill, Calgary, AB (Amanda, Nicola, Maureen), Jan and husband, Gerald Garratt, Edmonton, AB (Brad and Joni), Grant and wife, Donna, Leduc, AB (Nathan, David, Holly), and Tom Keenan and wife, Heather, Rocky Mountain House, AB (Erin, Amber, Jonathan) made our family complete. Millie is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren. We offer thanks to the Gull Lake Special Care Home’s doctor and staff for their exemplary care of our wife and mother. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the Gull Lake Alliance Church, Gull Lake, SK with Rev. Grant McDowell and Rev. Gord Willison officiating. The pianist for the service was Karen Mickelson with special music brought by Cam and Jennifer Barber singing, “It Will Be Worth It All”. Scripture reading was brought by Tom Keenan with Mark McDowell sharing the eulogy. “Supper Time”, “Just A Closer Walk with Thee” and “Shall We Gather at the River” were sung by the congregation. The ushers in the church were Doug Kerr and Bjarne Stusrud. The Interment was held at the Tompkins Cemetery, Tompkins, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Sterling McAllister, Louis Radford, Larry Pederson, Vic Sawatsky, Ken Klassen and Ray Benetto. Susan Froese
Passed away: November 10, 2008
Susan Matilda Froese went to be with her Lord & Savior on Monday, November 10, 2008, at the age of 57, after courageously fighting a major health issue. She was the fourth child born to Peter & Susie Schlamp on September 11, 1951 at Swift Current, SK. She received her education at Iris & Wymark schools. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith during her teen years. She then attended Bible School at Steinbach, MB for one year. Ernest & Susan were united in marriage on September 22, 1972. They lived in Rosenhof all of their married life. They were members of the EM Church at Chortitz for 40 years and for the last 7 – 8 years they have been involved at the Victory Family Church. In their early years Susan worked as a Certified Dental Assistant. Her true gifting showed up later when she became the “Sales Entrepreneur” of Rosenhof. Susan loved to garden, play piano and guitar, sing with her sisters, go shopping – never missing a good deal, and let’s not forget the phone. She had a phone ministry which consisted of selling, socializing and hours of counseling. Her life may best be described by her compassion for people and her passion for evangelism. Susan leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Ernest, of 36 years; three sons, Jerry (Stacy) & grandson, Matthew: the twins - Gene (Chelsea), and Murray (Twyla) & grandchildren, Steven, Tristen, Sydnee; her parents, Peter & Susie Schlamp; her brothers, Henry Schlamp (Anne), Edwin Schlamp (Audrey); her sisters, Emily Froese (Isaac), Carole Martens (Jim), Mary Henderson (Steve); her mother-in-law, Tina Froese; one brother-in-law, John Froese (Helen); five sisters-in-laws, Kathy Henderson (Phil), Trudy Olfert (Ron), Marion Ginter (Dave), Carrie Giesbrecht (Randy), Darlene Friesen (Gary); as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Susan was a woman of great faith and a powerful intercessor. She will be greatly missed, but her prayers will continue to impact this world and everyone she came in contact with. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Lorne Davis of the Victory Family Church officiating. The pianist for the service was Mary Henderson. The congregation joined in singing choruses led by a worship team from the Victory Family Church. The eulogy was brought by Henry Schlamp on behalf of Susan’s siblings with Pastor Lorne Davis reading the life history. Jerry, Murray & Geno Froese shared tributes to “Mom” with Marion Ginter also sharing a tribute to her sister-in-law. Musical selections were brought by Carole Martens, Mary Henderson & Jerry Froese singing, “Master of the Wind”, Don Mathies singing, “In Christ Alone” and Christina Ginter singing, “Legacy”. The ushers in the church were Darwin Plewis, Doug Martens, Bill Dyck and Dave Wiebe. The Interment Service was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Leon Froese, Stacey Henderson, Steve Froese, Dustin Mathies, Terry Mitchell and Jordan Friesen. In memory of Susan Froese, donations made to the Victory Family Church Building Fund would be appreciated by the family.
