Mabel Grainger

Passed away: February 5, 2007

Mabel was born on the family farm near the Blue Hills of Neidpath, SK on July 29, 1918 to Sanford M. & Rena (Jacobson) Dahl. Mabel cherished her memories of her young life on the farm with her family, relatives and friends who lived in the area at that time. She attended the Wiebe School by horse and buggy and also walked and rode 14 miles to attend Confirmation classes in the Lutheran faith. Although she grew up in the depression years, she always said it was a wonderful life. She enjoyed helping her mother and became an excellent cook and gardener. She also enjoyed helping her father with the horses and cattle and as a result, she had all the skills required to raise cattle. However, for fun, Mabel’s favorite pastime was dancing. She attended countless schoolhouse and barn dances. These started as a small child with her family and she remained a beautiful dancer into her 70’s. Mabel had many stories of the fun and mischief she and her brother and sisters got into along with at least 18 cousins who lived in the area. Being Norwegian, she developed a good sense of humor at an early age - it was essential. Mabel met her future husband, Edward Eugene Grainger, at her 16th birthday party. Gene’s cousins, the Walter Carroll’s, were close neighbors to the Dahl’s and they all remained lifelong friends. On April 7, 1938, Mabel & Gene were united in marriage at Waldeck, SK. Their plans were actually to be married in Swift Current but the heavy mud of #1 Highway caused their car to break down. Rather than wait until it could be repaired, they decided to tie the knot then and there. A minister and witnesses were hastily rounded up and much to their surprise, the whole town threw them a wedding dance that night. Their wedding turned out to be more special than they could have ever imagined. Truly, those were the days. As soon as the car was repaired, Mabel & Gene headed back home to get the crop in. Later in the summer they took a honeymoon trip to Banff, AB. They farmed and raised cattle until 1981 when Gene fell ill. They also raised a family of 5 lively children. Life was busy from then on. Beef cattle, milk cows, chickens, pigs, cats, dogs and kids populated their little farm. Cream was shipped, butter churned and endless amounts of canning and preserving done. In the early years, a whole beef was often butchered on the kitchen table. Mabel would frequently have a chicken beheaded, plucked, roasted and on the table by noon on a Sunday. The center of Mabel’s long life was her family and extended family. Over the years, many relatives and friends from the U.S, Ontario, Alberta or elsewhere would come to the farm to stay a day or two or a week or two. Mabel always squeezed them in without hesitation. She cooked for all and turned out wonderful meals with what seemed like little effort. She maintained close ties with many distant family members throughout her life. Mabel worked hard but also took time for other things. Often she would read to the children at the kitchen table when supper was done, and Gene would sit in as well. All the children grew up with Mabel & Gene’s love of books. Mabel also loved the prairies, nature and the animals, and these values were also passed down to her children. In the spring, she would take them walking over the pastures to find the first new crocuses blooming in the melting snow, or to see the new baby calves with their angelic faces, or a mother duck swimming down the creek with her ducklings gliding behind. The children sometimes would bring home a stray animal or two. One of these was a Heinz-57 dog, who was quickly named Mutt. The family already had a dog, a large German shepherd named Squeaks and the two of them were part of the family for many years hence. Mutt had been abused and was forever grateful that Mabel gave him a home. The family thought that he was nearly perfect until they discovered that he killed chickens. One night the dogs broke into the henhouse and wiped out the entire flock. The situation was serious. Mabel lined up the 3 youngest children on the couch and said, “Either the dogs or the chickens go!” The kids voted to keep the dogs. The farm never had chickens or eggs again and Mutt rode the tractor with Gene for many years after. Mabel indeed had a big heart! Mabel also had a passion for politics and often ‘sat at the polls’ during elections. One of the highlights of her life was a trip to Regina where she was a delegate at the Defenbaker convention. As a young girl, Mabel belonged to the new C.C.F. youth party but throughout her adult life she was a ‘true-blue Conservative’ and didn’t mind saying so. In the Trudeau years, one of her children commented that with such political zeal, Mabel should marry Pierre (they were the same age). With a straight face Mabel replied, “Why would I, he’s a Liberal?” After Gene’s death in 1982, Mabel moved to the Prairie Pioneer Lodge in Swift Current. This was “quite an adjustment” as she’d say, but she came to enjoy life there. She renewed acquaintances with many old friends and made some new ones. She enjoyed playing cards with her neighbors, going for coffee or dinners, a little dancing and traveling. She still loved to grow her flowers and now had time to read as much as she liked. Mabel also took great joy in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing pleased her more than to see them coming through the door. In 2002, with her health declining, Mabel moved to the Swift Current Care Centre where she resided until her passing on Monday, February 5, 2007. At the Care Centre she grew to care for her ‘girls & boys’, the nurses and caregivers, who were very kind to her. Mabel was a person of great spirit & strength, compassion & kindness. She had a zest for life and love for people right up until the end. She will be greatly missed by her family and the many who knew her. Mabel leaves to cherish her memory her surviving family, Dale Grainger (Edie), Davidson, SK, Nancy Keller (Jorg), Prince George, B.C., Maureen Grainger, Red Deer, AB, Edward ‘Ted’ Grainger (Mariann), Hodgeville, SK; her grandchildren, Diana (Bruce) Cook & children, Caitlyn, David, Bronwyn: Morgan (Angie) Grainger & children, Emma, Willow, Harmony: Jason Grainger & twins, Chelsea, Jillian: Jesse (Tammy) Keller & child, Kylie: Kathryn (Darrin) Ostberg & twins, Jakob, Mackenzie: Leah Pfeifle & children, Angel, Damian: Steven Grainger's children, Taylor, Mateo; her sister, Ferne (Ross) Orser, Edmonton, AB; a sister-in-law, Rita (Bill) Redpath, Swift Current, SK; a brother-in-law, Jim Hatson, Chiliwack, B.C.; and numerous nieces & nephews who were all dear to her. She was predeceased by her father, Sanford M. Dahl, 1974; her mother, Rena E. (Jacobson) Dahl, 1976; her husband of 44 years, Edward Eugene Grainger, 1982; a daughter, Dawn (Grainger) Oelke, 1986; a grandson, Steven Grainger, 2005; a brother, Gilman Dahl; and by a sister, Hilda (Chester) Turner. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Swift Current Funeral Chapel, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Terry Simonson officiating. The organist for the service was Arlene Olson. “Softly and Tenderly, Jesus Is Calling”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” were sung by the congregation. Maureen Grainger read scripture from 2 Timothy 4:7-8, Colossians 3:1-4 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-51. The Honorary Pallbearers were Bill Redpath, Gary Oelke, Verlyn Dahl and Jorg Keller. The Urn Bears were Jesse Keller and Morgan Grainger. The Interment will be held at the Harding Cemetery, Hodgeville, SK at later date. In Mabel’s memory, donations to the Swift Current Care Centre Auxiliary or to Tele-Miracle would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
