ELSIE STUMPF
ELSIE JEAN STUMPF was born November 24, 1923 in Kelowna, B.C. to Mildred and Cecil Hall, a sister for Marion and Lester. Soon after, her family returned to Saskatchewan to farm in the Droxford District south of Ernfold. Elsie attended Charlotte School for all of her education and was part of the Droxford Baptist Church community. She enjoyed the many church picnics and other social activities of the community where she met Conrad Stumpf. They were married October 19, 1940 and began farming together on the Stumpf homestead in the spring of 1941. Elsie took an active role on the farm, raising chickens and milking cows. They made their own sausage from their own beef and pork and Elsie canned everything from chickens to tomatoes. Three children were born: Jean, Leonard and Marvin. After Marvin was born and the country schools began to close, Con and Elsie moved their family to Ernfold where Con began working for the C.P.Railway. Elsie had his lunch ready for him when he left in the morning and his supper ready when he returned. She grew a beautiful flower and vegetable garden. In her spare time she did crafts, sewed, quilted, crocheted, knitted, embroidered and took up painting in acrylics and water colors. She loved to make things out of whatever was handy. Her family learned that simple things mean a lot. Elsie was a bird-watcher of sorts and especially enjoyed the hummingbirds that came to the feeder. She liked to go fishing and was a rock hound for a number of years. She enjoyed visiting and playing cards with friends and going to country dances. She loved country music and she and Con went several times to hear the Old Time Fiddlers play at Besant Park. Elsie loved to travel. She took Marvin by train both east and west to visit relatives. She was ready to go anywhere at the drop of a hat and she and Con would often take “drives” that would end up in Winnipeg or Drumheller. They also enjoyed bus tours together with friends. Elsie enjoyed visiting museums and had an appreciation for things from the past. She was a member of the Morse Culture and Heritage Association. She also had an extensive collection of elephants of all shapes and sizes and was always pleased to receive an addition to her collection. Con and Elsie moved to their little retirement home in Morse in 1975 where they continued to enjoy life together until Elsie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Elsie was so proud of each grandchild that came along. There were many trips to California to watch Marty and Jason grow up. The four Saskatchewan grandchildren spent plenty of time at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s coloring Easter eggs, playing dress-up and building houses out of cards. Pictures of her “babies”, her great-grandchildren, covered her walls. Each one had a special place in her heart. The last five years of Elsie’s life were spent at the Herbert Nursing Home where she slowly and peacefully moved into God’s deeper presence March 11, 2003. Elsie was predeceased by her mother and step-father Mildred and Archie Hyndman, her father and and step-mother, Cecil and Dilys Hall and a grandson, Kevin Stumpf. She is survived by her loving and faithful husband, Con, her sister, Marion O’Shea of Guelph, ON, and brother, Lester Hall of Swift Current, her children: Jean (Jack) Ohmstede of LaMesa, CA, Leonard (Linda) Stumpf of Neville, SK, Marvin (Joanne) Stumpf of Prince Albert, SK, six grandchildren: Marty (Teri) Ohmstede, Jason (Lisa) Ohmsteade, Tracy (Kenny) Lavigne, Jeffrey (Rachelle) Stumpf, Collin and Darren Stumpf; five great-grandchildren: Wesley and Bryce Ohmstede, McKenna Lavigne, Chase Ohmstede and Joshua Stumpf. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, March 17, 2003 at 2pm from the Morse United Church. Sandra Sellars officiated. Interment followed at Morse Cemetery. In living memory of Elsie, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by Prairie Memorial Funeral Home.
