The death of Mrs. Verena Rose (nee Linz) Hoffman of Cudworth occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at her daughter Brenda’s Cathedral Bluffs home, just north of Saskatoon. She was 78 years of age. Verena was born to Michael and Magdalena (nee Sis) Linz on January 19, 1930, at home on their farm in the Lake Lenore district. She grew up there and attained her elementary education at Solo Country School, then attended Humboldt Collegiate Institute for her secondary education. On June 5, 1950, Verena married Daniel “Dan” Hoffman in St. Anthony’s R.C. Church at Lake Lenore. Their marriage was blessed with four daughters. Verena and Dan began their life together in Lake Lenore. After several years, the family moved to Codette, where Dan was a grain buyer for Pioneer Grain Co., did some carpentry work, and was the mayor for seven years. In addition, Verena and Dan raised cattle and hogs and also operated a livestock trucking business for 11 years. In 1965, the Hoffmans moved to Middle Lake where they bought the hardware store and the Shell Bulk Fuel franchise, which they named Hoffman Manufacturing, and also did some farming. After selling the store, they had a full-time job constructing farm buildings, houses, and apartment buildings in surrounding areas. In 1979, Verena and Dan bought the St. Benedict lumberyard and formed a company with their family. The business was moved to Martensville in 1989 and, in 1997, they retired. Throughout the years, Verena’s life revolved around her family. She loved her role as a homemaker and all that it entailed. Her cooking skills were second to none and she enjoyed treating her family with the gift of their favorite dishes. Verena’s creativity was also evident in her landscaping and gardening, quilting, doll making, ceramics, painting, and even fine carpentry as she helped Dan make beds for their grandchildren. Verena will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 58 years, Dan Hoffman of Cudworth; their four children, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren: GWEN (Gord) Smith of Sherwood Park, AB, and family, Christopher Smith, Jennifer (Scott) Nielsen and their daughter Marissa, Colby (Lana) Smith and their daughter Brynn, and Jillian Smith; SANDY (Kim) Hancock of Saskatoon and family, Brecken Hancock (Jeremy Dodds), and Logan Hancock (Krista Greening); BRENDA (Kim Ward) Hoffman of Cathedral Bluffs (Saskatoon District) and family, Courtney Ward (William Bobey), and Chase Ward (Meghan Flanagan); and CINDY (Jeffrey) Steeves of Saskatoon and family, Megan Steeves (Dustin Truscott), and Lauren Steeves; two sisters: Loretta (Almer) Olson of Victoria, BC; and Sylvia (Don) Reiter of Humboldt; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Magdalena (nee Sis) Linz; and by five sisters and two brothers: Marie (Joe) Vedress, Dorothy (Paul) Cockrell, Armella (Gary) Schmitz, Hilda (Brian) McLennan, Andrew Linz (at 4 months of age), Sebastian Linz (at nine years of age), and Lucille (Leo) Cyr. The Prayer Service for Verena was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Friday, January 23, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., led by Jeff Steeves. William Bobey led the praying of the rosary, and the eulogy was delivered by Kim Ward. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Michael’s R.C. Church, Cudworth, on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Albert Ulrich. The cross bearer was Chase Ward. Pallbearers were Jennifer Nielsen, Colby, Jillian and Christopher Smith, Brecken and Logan Hancock, Courtney Ward, and Megan and Lauren Steeves. Memorial donations may be directed to the Palliative Care Nurses Fund. The interment will take place at St. Anthony’s R.C. Cemetery, Lake Lenore, at a later date. The death of Marie Margaret Moshewsky of Humboldt occurred at St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, on Monday, January 19, 2009. She was 94 years of age, and the last surviving member of her generation. Marie was born to Martin and Anna (nee Schikowsky) Moshewsky on August 5, 1914, at Humboldt, where she was raised and attended school. Following her education, she became a domestic housekeeper, initially for her parents and later for her sister Bergetta Swirsky and her family of two boys, Gordon and Lorne. Devoted service to others was definitely her calling in life. Marie lived with her nephews, Gordon and Lorne, who were like sons to her, and provided them with ongoing domestic care, from cooking to housekeeping. She was quite content staying close to home, living a quiet and simple life, keeping to herself, tending to her house, and planting and harvesting a small garden each year. In her leisure time, Marie enjoyed birdwatching - even the sparrows, and even into her 90s, she still loved playing cards into the wee hours of the morning, particularly Kaiser, Smear and 13. In addition, she spent many good times in the company of Berniece and Forbes Taylor. After Gordon’s death, Marie continued to reside with Lorne until just a few weeks ago when she moved into St. Mary’s Villa. Also of great importance to Marie was her spiritual life. She was always a woman of strong faith and an avid supporter of her church. Marie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her last surviving nephew and member of her entire family, Lorne Swirsky of Humboldt; special friends, Isabelle (Ed) Brockmeyer of Humboldt; and by numerous close neighbors and other friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Anna (nee Schikowsky) Moshewsky; three brothers: Peter, Leo and Frank Moshewsky; two sisters: Bergetta (Mike) Swirsky and Berneice Moshewsky; and by one sister-in-law, Grace Marshall. The Funeral Mass for Marie was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Emile April. Others taking part were: Ed Brockmeyer, cross bearer; Isabelle Brockmeyer, urn bearer; Ursula Klassen and Judy Plag, scripture readers; and Ursula Klassen, intentions. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Marie’s life.” Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Augustine Parish Building Fund. Ray Richard Troop, 67 years, of LeRoy, SK, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2009. He was born on January 15, 1941, at Portage la Prairie, MB, to Robert and Ethel (Morris) Douglas. Ray became the chosen son of Herbert and Adelia (Hare) Troop of Quill Lake, SK, in October 1945. His life at LeRoy began in 1946 when the family purchased the farm two miles west of LeRoy. Ray attended school in LeRoy until 1957, then Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon, SK, where he completed a welding course. Following this he worked construction on the hydro dams at Nipawin and Outlook, SK. In 1963, Ray moved to The Pas, MB, and began highway trucking with Swan River-The Pas Transport. On March 6, 1965, Ray married Alana Cameron at The Pas. Their marriage was blessed with two children. That same fall, they moved to LeRoy, purchasing the Edwin Eaton farm to begin a life-long cattle and grain farming adventure. In 1971, the Eaton house was moved closer to the main cattle operation where Ray continued to reside. He retired from active grain farming in 1998, but maintained an active interest in seeding and harvest by helping Werner Moellenbeck. Ray retired from cattle in fall 2006. His interests included auction sales, collecting anything John Deere, highway tractors, hockey, riding horses, fishing, curling and visiting with family and friends over coffee. Ray was active in the community as a member of the LeRoy Wildlife Federation, the Kinsmen and K40 Clubs, and goal judge for the LeRoy Braves games for many years. He volunteered with the LeRoy Fire Department for 35 years, achieving the rank of Captain. Ray will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 43 years, Alana Troop of LeRoy; their children: Leanne Troop (Ken) of Saskatoon; and Elissa Troop of Saskatoon; sister and brother-in-law, Carolee and Claude Despins of The Pas, MB; nephew, Curtis (Dawn) Despins and their daughter, Emerald of Calgary, AB; niece, Cherise Despins and children, Carlee and Mark of The Pas, MB; sister-in-law, Jean Douglas and her daughter, Cheryl of Brandon, MB; uncle, Victor Heintz of Saskatoon, SK; former brother-in-law, Percy Harse of Saskatoon, SK; an aunt, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Ethel Douglas; adoptive parents, Bert and Ada Troop; mother-and-father-in-law, Dorothy and Allan Cameron; and brother, James Douglas. In accordance with Ray’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Cremation has taken place. There was a “last coffee with Ray” at the Wildlife Federation Hall, LeRoy, on Saturday, January 31, 2009, at 2:30 p.m.. The death of Mrs. Marie Ann (nee Wolsfeld) Hall of Humboldt occurred at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Humboldt, on Thursday, July 26, 2007. She was 88 years of age. Marie was born to Joseph and Mary (nee Grittner) Wolsfeld on February 23, 1919, at Humboldt. She grew up on the Wolsfeld family farm in the Lake Lenore district and received her early education in the Lake Lenore area. On November 29, 1939, Marie married Sidney Hall. They made their home in Humboldt, where they raised a family of two daughters. Sidney passed away on June 1, 1981. Marie continued to reside in their house until the present, which had been “home” since 1943. Over the years, she was very involved in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, the Rebekah Sunshine Lodge and the New Horizons Senior Citizens’ Club. Marie enjoyed playing bridge, bowling and fishing. She was a “great” mom, a “great” grandma, a “great” great-grandma, and a very fulfilled and dedicated homemaker who loved cooking and baking. Marie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two daughters and their families: MYRNA (Norman) Miller of Invermere, BC, and family Adrienne (Gunnar) Benediktsson of Philadelphia, PA, and daughter Magdalena, and Jason Miller (Cassie McDougall) of Calgary, AB, and son Quinten; and CHERYL Duke and family, Krista Duke (George Rayner) and children Tyler and Kiana, and son Curtis Duke, all of Edmonton, AB; four sisters: Christine Langhorst of Humboldt, SK; Eleanor Bleich of Prince George, BC; Lucille Hackl of Prince Albert, SK; and Lavine Cooper of North Battleford, SK; one sister-in-law, Gerry Wolsfeld of Minneapolis, MN; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Hall (June 1, 1981); son-in-law, Stan Duke; parents, Joseph and Mary Wolsfeld; and by two sisters and two brothers: Phyl Chatlain, Florence Hooker, Joseph Wolsfeld, and Daniel Wolsfeld. The Funeral Service for Marie was held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Humboldt, on Saturday, August 4, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Joanne Beacon. The scripture reader was Kathleen Bowman, and music ministry was provided by Kathy Wolfe and Lona Sellinger. An honor guard was formed by members of the Rebekah Lodge. Honorary pallbearers were Rhea Leyh, Loretta Stryjek, Joyce Wildeman, Kathleen Bowman, and Charles Hall. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, at a future date. LETITIA “TISH” RUTH COATES (nee: Gibson) of Pioneer Lodge passed away Sunday, August 5, 2007 at the age of 92 years. Born in Wilburforce, Ontario December 22, 1914, she came west with her parents in 1917 to Eskbank, Saskatchewan where they operated a store. Tish grew up in Eskbank and received most of her education there. She spent a year in Toronto, Ontario to further her education. In 1934 she returned to Saskatchewan and attended Normal School. After receiving her teacher’s certificate, Tish taught school at Mankota, Brandview and Keelerville. She married Herbert D. Coates of Keeler in 1937 where they farmed and raised their family. Tish took an active part in the Keeler community and was a member of Keeler United Church UCW. Tish retired to Moose Jaw in 1980 where she became involved with Minto United Church, curling, golf and bridge. Many winters were spent in Arizona, USA. Predeceased by her parents, Lemuel and Harriet Gibson, her husband, Herbert Coates and son-in-law, Joe Templeton, Tish is survived by her son, Garry (Carol), daughter, Valerie Templeton; grandsons: Corey and Jeremy Coates, sister, Eileen (Arnold) Torgerson, special companion, Gerald Tilley, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Pioneer Lodge for the care and compassion Tish received while residing there. A Service of Remembrance will be held at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw on Monday, August 13, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. Gary Johnson will officiate. The death of Mr. John Adam Keehborn of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, (and formerly of Bruno), occurred peacefully at his residence on Saturday, August 4, 2007. He was 89 years of age. John was born on February 3, 1918, to Adam and Elizabeth (nee Edelmeyer) Keehborn on the family homestead in the Kildrum district near Bruno. He grew up there, and attended the Kildrum school. On August 16, 1955, John married Margaret Suer and made their home in Bruno. John was in the Army for a short period, and also spent some winters working at the nickel mine in Sudbury, Ontario. He later took over the family farm and continued farming until he retired. John’s favorite past time was playing baseball. He used to walk seven miles to Bruno to play ball with the Bruno Big Chiefs and later played with the Fulda Flyers. John also enjoyed trapping, hunting, curling and going for coffee with friends and family. After his retirement John took up fishing, going to sports days and watching all sports on T.V. especially baseball. His favorite team was the Toronto Blue Jays. John was always happiest when holidays came around because all his family came home. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife, MARGARET(nee Suer) Keehborn of Bruno; six children and their families: WARREN Keehborn; CONNIE (Doug) Felix and family Christa, Shawna, Rhea and Kyle; GAIL Keehborn and son Jaxon; WENDY (Mark) Mann and daughter Rebecca; GLENDA (Larry) Greuel and family Carla, Adam, Dustin and Tyler; RANDY (Denise) Keehborn and family Jordan and Devin all of Saskatoon; one sister, Katie Roles of Sudbury, ON; and by many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Bruno R.C. Church on Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Rev. Fr. Joseph Ackerman, OSB. Others taking part were: Dustin Greuel, cross bearer; Denise Keehborn and Ron Huber, scripture readers; Carla Greuel and Rhea Felix, intentions. Gift bearers were John’s grandchildren.
