Humboldt, Saskatchewan
SUCHAN - The unexpected death of Mr. Leo Benedict Suchan of Humboldt occurred at his residence on Monday, January 12, 2009. He was 87 years of age. Leo was born on June 18, 1921, to Peter and Mary (nee Witt) Suchan at Carmel. He grew up on the family farm in the Carmel district, and attended Valleyview and Cranich Lake country schools. Following his education, Leo worked for farmers in the area. Eventually, he moved to Ontario, where he was employed at a bush camp, then in a gold mine at Geraldton, as a railroad worker at Essex and, finally, for the Heinz Company at Leamington. In 1947, Leo returned to Saskatchewan and enrolled in a barbering course at Regina. After completing that, he moved to Humboldt and worked at Johnson’s Barber Shop. On July 27, 1948, Leo married Erna Timmerman at St. Gregor. Their union was blessed with four daughters; however, their daughter Jacqueline died in infancy. In 1970, Leo opened his own business, named Suchan’s Barber Shop, which he operated until retiring at the age of 80 in 2001, ending a very successful career spanning 54 years, of which he was very proud. Since 1948, Leo was a member of the Knights of Columbus. As well, he served in various capacities and, for several years, was especially involved in organizing bingo functions. Leo was also a member of the Humboldt Bowling League and served as president of the local association for many years. His natural skill in the sport enabled him to represent Saskatchewan in the Western Playdowns which was held in Winnipeg. Just a few weeks ago, Leo rolled a men’s 327 single, of which he was very proud. His other interests over the years included golfing, fishing, camping with his family, upholstering, and redecorating his home - from painting and wallpapering to laying tile floors. His role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather meant a great deal to him, and he loved spending time with his extended family and following their sporting activities. It was important to Leo to exercise his mind in order to keep it sharp and alert, so he spent a lot of time reading, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. In February 2008, he moved into the Harry Ford Centre. Leo loved to be around people, so enjoyed the social life there, and took on the position of coordinating various activities, including bingo, shuffleboard and cards. Leo will be lovingly remembered by two daughters, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren: JUDY Chepil of Waterhen Lake, SK, and family, Wesley (Jackie) Manderscheid and daughter Taylor; and DEBORAH (Craig) Albers of Spruce Grove, AB, and family, Matthew (Elissa) Albers, and Andrew Albers (fiancee Levylyn Ramiro); son-in-law, Wayne Parry of Naicam and family, Kelly (Nambi) Parry and children, Xander, Alicia and Ocean, Koreen (Clayton) Turcotte and children Brittany and Austin, and Tracy (Darren) Olson and son Tyler; one brother, Tony Suchan of Georgetown, ON; one half-brother and three half-sisters: Louis (Sophia) Fraess of Regina, SK; Anne Bay of Cranbrook, BC; Sally Fraess (friend Ron) of New Westminster, BC; and Lydia Eckl of Humboldt, SK; one half-brother-in-law, George Bay of Saskatoon; one sister-in-law, Norma Suchan of Humboldt; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Elaine Lydia Greve
Jun 30, 1939 - Jan 09, 2009
Lanigan, Saskatchewan
GREVE-
The death of Mrs. Elaine Lydia (nee Rode) Greve of Lanigan, SK, occurred at Lanigan Hospital on Friday, January 9, 2009. She was 69 years of age. Elaine was born in LeRoy, SK, on June 30, 1939, to Albert and Bertha (nee Schinkel) Rode, a farming family from the Jansen area. In 1948, they relocated to a farm outside of Lanigan. Growing up, Elaine attended elementary and high school in Lanigan, and then went to teachers’ college. She then taught school in Viscount and Wakaw. During that time, Elaine began dating Gordon Greve, whom she married on August 17, 1962. They built a home in Lanigan and populated it with three boys. The loss of their middle son, Trevor, in 1987, had a lasting effect on Elaine. The local church was always an integral part of Elaine’s life. Her involvements included teaching Sunday and Vacation Bible schools, singing in the choir, Bible studies, ladies groups, and much more. Elaine spent much of her adult life as a homemaker; holding down the fort, refereeing the boys, gardening, cooking, canning, doing laundry, and all that other really fun stuff. She focused on her family and kept her promise, remaining faithful to Gordon until his death on Friday, December 26, 2008. Elaine’s other interests included Scrabble, ping-pong, music, grandchildren, and telling Gordon to “change his filthy pants.” She loved to read, write, and study, and her vocabulary continued to get more gooder throughout her life. Elaine lived a very simple life. She had no extravagant dreams, but instead was very content in her small farming community, well-connected to the people and happenings of Lanigan. Elaine will be sadly missed by her family and community. She was predeceased by her father, Albert Rode; sister, Gladys Gniewotta; son, Trevor; granddaughter, Sydney; and faithful husband, Gordon. Elaine leaves her sons, Sanford and Curtis; three grandchildren: Daniel, Rachel, and Andrew Greve; daughter-in-law, Lorraine; mother, Bertha Rode; five sisters: Norma, Marlene (Al), Verna Jean (Bill), Marion (Cam), and Glenna (Bob); and two brothers: Ernest (Gail), and Larry (Claudette). Elaine’s modest lifestyle led to her request for a small and simple funeral. Out of respect for her wishes, we have kept this as small and low-key as possible, while allowing for those who loved her to say good-bye and to celebrate her life. With that in mind, the Private Family Funeral Service for Elaine was held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lanigan, on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Sanford Greve. Others taking part were: Larry Rode, eulogist; Marlene Roth, pianist; Curtis Greve, scripture reader; Bryce Bartel and Sharrod Failler, ushers. Interment will take place at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. SCHULER-LEFEBVRE, Humboldt, SK. (306-682-4114)
