Bernard “Barney” was born in Lake Lenore, the fourth son of Nick and Elizabeth Berscheid. He was destined to be a farmer and remained his whole life in Lake Lenore. In 1953, Barney married Ruth Olson of Spalding, who became his life partner for just two months short of 50 years. They were blessed with seven children, 25 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Their eldest son, Dr. Bruce (Barbara) live in Saskatoon. They have son, Brian and twin daughters, Chelsea and Janelle (Heath Hindman). Brenda (Larry Legare) resides in Medicine Hat, AB, and have four children: Cara, Chris, Loren and Kaylyn. Denise (Tim Forer) farm in Avonlea, SK. They have four children: Jennifer, Nicole, Lindsey and Blair. Kim (Brenda) farm in Lake Lenore and have four children: Sherri (Doran Pronych) and son Mason; Wayne (Lindsay); Jill (Jeremy Jenkins); and Brent. Eric (Shelly) also farm at Lake Lenore and have three children: Morgan, Brittany and Kyle. Mavis (Les Strueby) reside in Lloydminster, AB, and have three children: Danielle, Rylan and Teryn. Clinton (Yvonne) farm by Annaheim and have four children: Kristen, Kimberly, Carson and Kelsey. Dad spent his whole life in this wonderful community of Lake Lenore and was a proud member of the Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus. Dad was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing these passions with his friends, children and grandchildren. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth, and was the last surviving member of the Nick and Elizabeth Berscheid family. The Prayer Service for Barney was held at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Lake Lenore, on Thursday, January 1, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., led by Fr. Lawrence DeMong, O.S.B. Scripture readers were Clint and Yvonne Berscheid and words of remembrance were delivered by Bruce Berscheid. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Lake Lenore, on Friday, January 2, 2009, at 2:30 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Joseph Ackerman, OSB. Others taking part were: Eric Berscheid, cross bearer; Mavis Strueby, Brenda Legare, and Denise Forer, urn bearers; Kim and Brenda Berscheid, scripture readers; Shelly Berscheid and Barb Berscheid, intentions; Mavis Strueby and Clint Berscheid, gift bearers. Music ministry was provided by pianist Denise Forer, organist Norma Weber, and Violinist, Kaylyn Legare. An honor guard was formed by members of the Lake Lenore Lions and the Knights of Columbus. Honorary pallbearers were Barney’s grandchildren and all others who shared in his life.” Interment followed at St. Anthony’s R.C. Cemetery. It is with profound sadness that the family of Elsa (nee Koldeweihe) Engele of Humboldt, (and formerly of Carmel), announces her death the morning of Thursday, January 1, 2009, at Humboldt and District Regional Hospital, Humboldt. She was 76 years of age. Elsa was born on March 5, 1932, to John and Emma (nee Koopman) Koldeweihe on their homestead in the Muenster district. She was raised on the family farm and attended a country school in the area, and then St. Peter’s College at Muenster, where she completed her Grade 11. In her youth, Elsa worked on many farms in the area, providing childcare as well as a needed helping hand. In 1956, Elsa married Theodore Reineke and, together, had five children. In 1976, she married Theodore Engele of Carmel and, together, raised nine children. Elsa was active in the community and was part of the CWL in Carmel for 40 years. Over the years, she pursued many interests and activities. Elsa absolutely loved gardening and took great pride in her yard. She also enjoyed quilting, ceramics, canning, baking, crafting and woodworking. Elsa was also an exceptional cook. Feeding nine children for 20 years and, in later years, up to 32 immediate family members at a family Christmas - there was always copious amounts of wonderful, tasteful food to eat. Elsa loved to spend time visiting with friends and family - especially her grandchildren. Elsa will be lovingly remembered by her six sons, two daughters, and their families: DAVID (Gina) Reineke of Regina, Amanda, Justin and Megan; GERARD (Connie) Reineke of Edmonton, AB, Nicole and Christopher; KEVIN Koldeweihe of Edmonton, AB; WAYNE (Cory) Reineke of Humboldt, Brydon, Brooklyn, Rebecca and Liam; LORIANN (Lee) Wuchner of St. Gregor, Michael and Kendal; KENNETH (Tammy) Engele of Carmel, Julianna and Owen; ROXANN (Darnell) Therres of Saskatoon, Keeshawn and Jaxson; and JASON (Jamie) Engele of Estevan, and Cheyanne; two sisters: Louise (Robert) Kopp and Loretta (Ed) Berting, both of Humboldt; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore “Ted” Engele (January 24, 2007); daughter, Donna Reineke (December 24, 2000); parents, John and Emma (nee Koopman) Koldeweihe; and by three sisters and one brother: Louise Koldeweihe, Hilda (Victor) Kuechle, Paula (Arnold) Zimmerman, and Alois (Kay) Koldeweihe. The Prayer Service for Elsa was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Monday, January 5, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., led by Jenny Irwin and organist Sandra Athmer. Scripture readers were Roxann Therres and Kenneth Engele, and the eulogy was delivered by David Reineke and Loriann Wuchner. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Richard Meidl, OSB. Others taking part were: Kendal Wuchner, cross bearer; Kendall Wuchner, Brooklyn Wandzura and Nicole Reineke, altar servers; Gina Reineke and Connie Reineke, scripture readers; Cory Reineke, intentions; Lee Wuchner, Darnell Therres and Tammy Engele, gift bearers; and Denise Germain, organist. The death of Mrs. Catherine M. (nee Stahl) Callele of Bruno occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Monday, January 5, 2009. She was 77 years of age. Catherine, the youngest child of Ervin and Katie (nee Bourauel) Stahl was born on October 12, 1931, at home on their farm near Bruno. She grew up there and attained her education in the small one-room Hoffman School. Over the years, Catherine often spoke of her fond memories from her school days. After completing her education, she was employed as a clerk in Battel’s General Store in Bruno for two years. On September 30, 1952, Catherine married Kelly Callele in St. Bruno R.C. Church, Bruno. Their union was blessed with five children, three sons and two daughters. For the next 26 years, Catherine and Kelly farmed in the Bruno and Dana districts. In 1978, they sold the farm and moved into Bruno. From 1980 to 1988, Catherine and Kelly were employed as cooks for the C.N.R. extra-gangs. Their work took them to Peace River, AB, Port of Churchill, MB, northern Ontario, and to most of central and southern Saskatchewan. Catherine loved cooking and excelled at it. As well, she enjoyed gardening, flowers, birdwatching, Sunday afternoon drives in the country, fishing, bowling, playing cards - especially Smear and Kaiser and, more than anything, getting together with her family. Catherine loved sports and was an avid Saskatchewan Roughrider and Toronto Blue Jay fan. She and Kelly attended the majority of their children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. As a member of the St. Bruno Parish and the Bruno Senior Citizens Club, she often took part in their various activities. Catherine will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 56 years, KELLY Callele of Bruno; three sons, two daughters, ten grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter: KEVIN (Debbie) Callele of Regina and family, Kayla (Shawn), and Dana; MURRAY (Cindy) Callele of Porcupine Plain and family, Logan (Jessica) and daughter Emi, and Frank; BRENDA (Mervin) Weiman of Lloydminster, AB, and family, Shawn (Erin), and Scott (Johanna); LYLA (Kevin) Hart of Prince Albert and son Michael; and SHELDON (Bonita) Callele of Lloydminster, AB, and family Kirby, Jared and Jalyn; two sisters: Clothilda “Kay” Hassen of Saskatoon; and Aurelia Nett of Bruno; one sister-in-law, Clementine Stahl of Martensville; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ervin and Katie (nee Bourauel) Stahl; two brothers: Eugene (Alice) Stahl, and Leon Stahl; and by two brothers-in-law: Abraham Hassen and Peter Nett. The death of Mrs. Anne (nee Zerff) Germaine of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Friday, January 9, 2009. She was 91 years of age. Anne was born on July 13, 1917, to Michael and Elizabeth (nee Bendig) Zerff at Carmel, Sk. She attended Valley View school in the Carmel district where she obtained her Grade 8 education. Anne married Alex Germaine on November 15, 1938, at Conception R.C. Church, south of Carmel. They built a house and barn on the land which Alex’s father, Andrew gave them. On this farm they were blessed with five children: Joyce, Allan, Vern, Duane and Sharon. Alex and Anne farmed in the Hillsley School district for 29 years, then moved to Humboldt in 1965. Anne worked as a cook at various jobs and as a store clerk. After she had surgery she retired. Playing cards, especially kaiser and smear, was a favorite pastime. Anne was a very independent and self-sufficient woman. She was a great cook. It was never a problem to add a few more plates to the table. The Zerff family was very close. For Birthdays, Anniversary’s and other gatherings they liked to all get together for some cards and of course some food. When ever any of the kids came home they always had their favorite meals waiting for them. In 2004, Anne and Alex moved into St. Mary’s Villa and shortly after Alex passed away. Anne continued to reside there until her passing. Anne will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three children: Joyce Trask of Saskatoon; Allan (Sandra) Germaine of Regina; and Sharon Germaine (Larry Olson) of Saskatoon; five grandchildren: Jason (special friend, Justine) Trask, Shannon (Neil) Mandziak, Lindsay (Sherry) Germaine, Darryl (fiancé Jamie) Germaine and Derek (special friend, Terri) Germaine; one great-granddaughter, Taelyn Germaine; Larry’s two sons: Justin (Danielle) Olson, and Cody Olson; one brother, Joe (Lillian) Zerff; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Zerff and Bertha Zerff and by numerous nieces and nephews. Anne was predeceased by her husband, Alex Germaine; two sons, Vernon, and Duane (in infancy); one granddaughter, Heather (in infancy); parents, Michael and Elizabeth (nee Bendig) Zerff; four brothers and four sisters: Otilda, Alex, Helen, Mike, Elizabeth, Peter, Leo and Agnes. The Prayer Service for Anne was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Sunday, January 11, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., led by Nestor Trach and organist Denise Germain. Scripture readers were Jeanette Engele and Margaret Schikowsky. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church on Monday, January 12, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Emil April. The death of Mr. Gabriel Joseph Dufault of Naicam, SK, occurred at Melfort Hospital, Melfort, SK, on Friday, January 9, 2009. He was 81 years of age. Gabriel was born on August 2, 1927, to Jeremie and Marie (nee Brisson) Dufault at home on the farm near St. Front, SK. He grew up on the family homestead east of Lake Charron and attended Brightside School. As a young man, Gabriel worked for a short time in Winnipeg, MB, returning to Saskatchewan during the early part of 1954 to work for H.R. Knutson of Dahlton, SK. It was at that time that he met Florence Gopfrich who was also employed by the Knutsons. They were married on October 28, 1954, and began their life together on their farm east of Lake Charron across from the farm where Gabriel grew up. Gabriel and Florence were blessed with five children. They remained living on the farm until 1993. Throughout his life Gabriel enjoyed farming, but times were tough and to help supplement the farm income, he worked at numerous jobs which included: the building of the Naicam Water Treatment Plant; working for the R.M. clearing brush; building grain bins for Beaver Lumber; and working for Ron and Wilbur Johnson. Later in life, he enjoyed taking long walks and going downtown to coffee row. Gabriel especially enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Citizens Center where his specialty was helping out in the kitchen. His hobby was beautifying his yard and he took great pride in his many flowers. Gabriel reaped the benefits of his hard work by winning the Sask. Housing Yard Pride Prize many times over the years. He also enjoyed fishing trips with his family and friends. Gabriel will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 54 years, FLORENCE (nee Gopfrich) Dufault of Naicam, SK; their four children: Lillian (Jim) Meekins of Humboldt, SK; Clara (Greg) Tessmer of Weekes, SK; Theresa Graf (Doug Durbano) of High River, AB; Robert (Linda Salikin) Dufault of Humboldt, SK; Florence’s son, Ken (Judi) Montgomery of Calgary, AB; 15 grandchildren: Curtis (Amy) Meekins, Terry Meekins, Helen Meekins (Wayne Obrigewitch), Brett (Shelley) Norum, Barrett (Aaron) Norum, Brock (Chantelle) Norum, Maryanne Norum, Kaire (Arnie) Davis, Mark Graf, Matthew Graf, Russel Salikin, Ashley Salikin-Dufault, Darren Dufault, Samantha Salikin, and Jesse Salikin; eight great-grandchildren; six sisters; three brothers; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, Andrew; his parents, Jeremie and Marie (nee Brisson) Dufault; three sisters: Estelle, Dina and Jeanine; one brother, Rudolf; parents-in-law, John and Lillian (nee Devine) Goprich; sister-in-law, Maryanne Gopfrich; and son-in-law, Brian Norum. Stanely "Stan" Gerald Neubauer

The death of Mr. Stanley “Stan” Gerald Neubauer of Humboldt occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Sunday, January 11, 2009. He was 67 years of age. Stan was born on December 8, 1941, to Peter and Frances (nee Lorenz) Neubauer at Humboldt. He attained his formal education at Carmel. On May 20, 1963, Stan married Darlene Massinger at Marysburg. Two children, a daughter and a son, were born to them. The Neubauer family resided in Humboldt. On December 18, 1969, Stan began a 31 year career as a heavy duty mechanic at the Lanigan division of the Saskatchewan Potash Corporation on the underground crew. Unfortunately, on September 12, 2000, a very disabling stroke prevented him from working any longer. Since then, when he was able, he liked to socialize over a cup of coffee downtown. Over the years, Stan enjoyed spending his leisure time playing pool, racing toboggans, hunting, and fishing, and especially loved spending time in the northern parts of Saskatchewan and Alberta. He was also known for his fondness of pet animals. Stan is survived by his wife, Darlene (nee Massinger) Neubauer of Humboldt; daughter, Lorelei Neubauer of Saskatoon; son, Scott Neubauer of Saskatoon; brother, Jim Neubauer of Saskatoon; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Peter Neubauer (1965); mother, Frances (nee Lorenz) Neubauer (1946); and by two sisters: Janet Neubauer (1940), and Gladys Neubauer (1937). The Funeral Service for Stan was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Fr. Emile April. The eulogy was delivered by Lorelei Neubauer. It was Stan’s wish to have his body donated to medical science. Interment will take place at a future date.
