ACKERMAN - The death of Mrs. Katherine “Katie” Anne (nee Haslbeck) Ackerman of Birch Manor, Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, (and formerly of Humboldt), occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Tuesday, June 9, 2009.
She was 89 years of age.
Katie was born on June 27, 1919, to John and Anna (nee Dankesreiter) Haslbeck at home on the Haslbeck family farm in the Lake Lenore district.
She grew up there and attended Lenore Valley School in the area, the same school where her children would attend in the future.
Eventually, Katie met Michael “Mike” Ackerman, a blacksmith who was employed in Lake Lenore.
They were married on November 17, 1936.
Initially, Katie and Mike resided in the living quarters of the blacksmith shop.
In 1944, they bought a farm eight miles west of Lake Lenore and, after moving a house onto the land, made their home there.
They also renovated an old log house into a blacksmith shop for Mike.
They worked side-by-side, and raised a family of five, three daughters and two sons.
In 1972, Mike and Katie retired into Humboldt, passing the operation of the farm on to the next generation, their younger son Bernard.
A very self-sufficient and easy-going lady, Katie enjoyed staying at home tending to her garden, reading, listening to music, and watching T.V.
When she did go out and about, she could be seen all over town on her little scooter.
Katie always looked forward to holidays and the birthdays of her family members.
Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to her and she cherished their visits, often reminiscing and telling them stories.
She would frequently treat everyone by taking them out for supper at Wong’s.
Also of great importance to her was her faith.
Mike passed away on February 21, 1999.
Katie continued to reside in Humboldt until 2008 when she made a final move to Bethany Pioneer Village.
Katie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her five children: KAYE (Mel) (Gartner) Jasken of Bruno, SK; JOE (Marilyn) Ackerman of Pilger, SK; MARY (Henry) Mette of Prince Albert, SK; BARBARA (Stan) Lozinski of St. Albert, AB; and BERNARD Ackerman of Flin Flon, MB; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild (to be born in August); her twin sister, Anne Fredrickson of Stoughton, SK; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael “Mike” Ackerman (1999); one son-in-law, August Gartner 1996); two grandchildren: Brian Gartner (1960); and Yvonne Gartner (1983); one great-granddaughter, Sarah Gollan (1986); parents, John and Anna (nee Dankesreiter) Haslbeck; and by three brothers and three sisters.
The Prayer Service for Katie was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., led by Walter Sarauer and organist Kathy Detillieux.
Scripture readers were Lynn Dauvin and Jackie Duford, and the eulogy was delivered by Gail Lucyshun.
The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Friday, June 12, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., concelebrated by Fr. Emile April and Fr. Bernard Stauber, OSB.
Others taking part were: Cody Lucyshun, cross bearer; Bev Gollan and Lois Gartner, scripture readers; Leah Gollan, intentions; Sherry, Cory and Dawn Dust, gift bearers.
Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Katie’s life.”
Active pallbearers were Keith Gartner, Lyle Gartner, Duane Mette, Jamie Ackerman, Tim Ackerman, and Kurt Lozinski.
Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be directed to either Bethany Pioneer Village, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Gerard Henry Theissing

THEISSING - The death of Mr. Gerard Henry Theissing of Fulda occurred accidentally on Monday, June 8, 2009, in the Fulda district.
He was 54 years of age.
Gerard, the only son of Anthony and Elizabeth (nee Bernauer) Theissing, was born on February 7, 1955, in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Humboldt.
He was raised on the family farm in the Fulda district, where he resided until his untimely death.
Gerard attended Keller School, Fulda School, and Humboldt Collegiate Institute.
In 1977, he married Rita Weyland and in 1984, their daughter Kristen was born.
Nature was one of Gerard’s greatest loves.
Every day he would take a drive around the countryside to see the wildlife.
In the Fall, he looked forward to hunting geese, ducks, grouse, and deer with his friends.
Gerard was an avid naturalist and knew the names of all the plants, animals, and flowers in the area.
He was the founder of the local Ducks Unlimited chapter, and an active member of the Middle Lake Wildlife Federation.
Gerard was extremely creative and extended his love of nature into the home with his landscaping, gardening and flower arranging.
He grew Saskatoon berry trees and often tried to defy the 2b growing zone that he lived in.
Gerard took great pride in many gardens around the farm and grew many unique varieties of flowers.
Gerard was a self-taught floral arranger and used his skills to make arrangements for family, friends, and his daughter’s wedding in 2006.
Every year, he grew a pumpkin for the Pilger Pumpkin Festival.
Though he never grew the biggest pumpkin, he used his pumpkins and flowers to decorate the hall and volunteered his time for the festival.
Gerard was also well known for his culinary talents.
His secret home-made sausage recipe was coveted by many families in the area.
Gerard also enjoyed making gourmet meals for friends and family, especially using wild game.
As well, he loved to cook for seniors at the two nursing homes where he worked.
After his shifts he would often take the time to visit with the residents and make them feel special.
Gerard regularly visited with family and friends and always took time to call those whom he loved.
Gerard will be lovingly remembered and missed by his daughter, Kristen Theissing-Raney and her husband Michael Raney of Bradwell, SK; his mother, Elizabeth (nee Bernauer) Theissing of Humboldt, SK; Kristen’s mother, Rita (nee Weyland) Theissing of Humboldt; two God-children: Jodie (Graeme) Armstrong of Carmel; and Janelle Collin (fiancé Ryan Paproski) of Saskatoon, SK; and by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Anthony Theissing; paternal grandparents, Henry and Josephine Theissing; and by his maternal grandparents, John and Veronica Bernauer.
The Prayer Service for Gerard was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Friday, June 12, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., led by Nestor Trach.
Others taking part were: Janelle Collin and Bernadette Herman, scripture readers; Allen Kube, eulogist; Kristen Theissing-Raney and Katie Nichol, music ministry.

Interment followed at St. John’s R.C. Cemetery in the Willmont district near Fulda.

William "Willie" Alfred Lemke

LEMKE - The death of Mr. William “Willie” Alfred Lemke of Birch Manor, Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Friday, June 12, 2009.
He was 94 years of age.
Willie was born on November 17, 1914, to Wilhelm and Anna (nee Krueger) Lemke in Germany.
The Lemke family immigrated to Canada in 1925, and settled on a farm west of Middle Lake.
Willie had received some early schooling in Germany and continued his education at Wilfred School and Lucien Lake School in the Middle Lake district.
He then worked at various places as a farm laborer.
On November 3, 1942, Willie married Eleanora Martinka in old St. Benedict Parish Church.
They began their life together on a farm east of Middle Lake, where they ran a mixed-farm operation and raised four children, three daughters and one son.
Over the years, Willie and Eleanora moved back and forth between Humboldt and Middle Lake again, where they eventually remained.
During that time, Willie held various jobs in the Middle Lake area doing carpentry and truck driving until his retirement.
He was a very skilled carpenter and built numerous new houses as well as making furniture, and doing home renovations and other projects.
In addition, Willie drove school bus for five years, and was the neighborhood vet and “Mr. Fix-it”.
He took great pride in his many accomplishments and was only satisfied with a job well done and completed.
Willie also volunteered many hours working on a variety of projects at the church, and was a member of the choir and the Knights of Columbus.
A very sociable person, Willie loved visiting, telling stories, entertaining as a member of the Slough Grass Singers, square dancing, and bowling.
Other pastimes included woodworking, gardening and, in more recent years, doing puzzles and reading.
William will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 66 years, ELEANORA (nee Martinka) Lemke of Birch Manor, Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake; four children and eight grandchildren: MARIANNE (Walter) Skoropad of Regina and family, Donna and David; LILLIAN (Marvin) Michel of Saskatoon and daughter, Nancy; CAROL (Ernie) Morris of Pierson, MB, and family, Warren, Carla and Natasha; and EDWARD (Ellen) Lemke of Winnipeg, MB, and family, Christopher and Susan; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Eric (Adina) Lemke of Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake; cousin, Rudy Lemke of Germany; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives of the Lemke and Martinka families.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Elaine Lemke (in infancy); one son, Ralph Lemke (in infancy); his parents, Wilhelm and Anna (nee Krueger) Lemke; and by two sisters: Emmie (Albert) Tobin, and Ida (Eugene) Seiler.
The Prayer Service for William was held at Canadian Martyrs R.C. Church, Middle Lake, on Monday, June 15, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., led by Luella Bregenser.
Scripture readers were Rudy Martinka and David Skoropad (Prayers and Mass) and the eulogy was delivered by Carol Morris.
Music ministry was provided by organist Jill Martinka and members of the Martinka family and the Canadian Martyrs R.C. Church choir (Prayers and Mass).
The Funeral Mass was offered at Canadian Martyrs R.C. Church on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Bernard Stauber, OSB.
Others taking part were: Ed Brockman, cross bearer; Nancy Fortier and Carla Shabaga, gift bearers; Elaine Siegel and Yvette Baran, memorial table attendants.
An honor guard was formed by members of the Knights of Columbus.
Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Willie’s life.”
Active pallbearers were David Skoropad, Chris Lemke, Paul Fortier, Marvin Martinka, Warren Bobinski, and Gerard Baran.
Interment followed at Canadian Martyrs R.C. Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be directed to either Bethany Pioneer Village or the Canadian Martyrs R.C. Cemetery Fund.
