WALTER LEONARD JEWSBURY quietly passed away January 2, 2009 at the age of 86. Walter was born in Moose Jaw on May 23, 1922, living in Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, where he retired after a lengthy career with CP Rail in 1982 and returned to Moose Jaw. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, serving in various positions including two terms as President and a long association with the Poppy Fund. Walt enjoyed playing sports, bowling and curling, but particularly enjoyed playing and watching golf. In later years he especially enjoyed “the group of four” card games at the Legion. He also loved walking in Wakamow with his buddy Budha! Walter was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Walter, first wife Jackie, sister Margaret and brother-in-law Jimmy Sampson, sister Gladys, sister Flo and brother-in-law Harold Humberstone, brother Ken, brothers-in-law: Andy Stouse, Casmir Banks, and Bob Mooney, sister-in-law Ellen (Eugene) Elliot and niece Honor Mooney. Walter is survived by wife Kathleen; daughters: Jackie (Bob) Calvert and Janice, sister Grace Stouse; sisters-in-law: Velma Jewsbury and Joyce Mooney; brother-in-law: Walter Banks, extended family: Chuck (Vivian), Tim (Sue), Jeff (Debbie), Arlene (John), Maureen (Dennis), and Greg, brothers-in-law Art (Joyce), Don (Lyd) and Ken (Maxine), Ruben (Joan); sisters-in-law: Anne (Ken), Marj and Joyce; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews as well as family in England. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Betty Bradley will officiate. Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites will be conducted by Roscoe Steele of Moose Jaw Branch #59. At the family’s request, and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, c/o 268 High Street West, Moose Jaw, S6H 1S8, the Regina Renal Clinic, c/o Regina General Hospital, 1440 14th Avenue, Regina, S4P 0W5, or to a charity of one’s choice. MILDRED FLORENCE COLWELL (Voisey) was born May 31, 1916 in the Bridgeford area and passed away January 5, 2009 in the Central Butte Regency Manor. She was raised on the family farm south of Bridgeford and in 1938 married John Colwell. They lived and farmed near Bridgeford until 1973 when they retired to Summerland, B.C. In 1992 they returned to Saskatchewan to be close to family. Predeceased by her parents, husband John in 1999, two brothers and four sisters, Mildred is survived by one sister, Marion (Egon) Nielsen, son, Joe (Liz); daughters: Marilyn Kearns, Carole (Jim) Isakson and Shirley (Fred) Player; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. The Funeral Service will be held in the Central Butte United Church on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2p.m. Reverend Rick McCorrister will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Iver Main Place or Central Butte and District Health Care Foundation. Audrey Mantach

Audrey passed quietly away January 6, 2009 at age 74. Born in Moose Jaw to Earl and Ida Good, she grew up on a farm in the Mayberry area of Southern Saskatchewan. She married Robert Mantach June 29, 1957 and had four daughters, Laurie, Brenda, Andrea, and Tracey. Audrey enjoyed her family and running their family businesses. For many years they ran and looked after the concession at the Optimist Ball Park. She was active with Jobs Daughters, Zion United Church, and teaching Sunday School. She is predeceased by her parents, Earl and Ida; siblings Jackie and Herbert; and nephew Robert Ames. Left to remember Audrey, her family: husband Bob; sister Beth (Chuck) Ames and family; children: Laurie (Russell) Lunde, Brenda, Andrea, and Tracey (Len); grandchildren: Winter (David Owen), Marshall, Bridie, Madison, Jesse, and Dallas; and great-grandson Avyn. A Celebration of Audrey’s life will be held at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Friday January 9, 2008 at 3:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Memorialization will take place at a later date. Dorothy Wells

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dorothy Wells, age 86, on Thursday January 8, 2009. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Eric, brother Fred Fairman, son-in-law Don Palmer, sister and brother-in-law Alice and Rob Grindley, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Al and Olive Hayes, and brother-in-law Hector Barber. She leaves to mourn daughters, Margaret (Fred) Collins, and Daphne Palmer, son Robert (Kathy) Wells; grandchildren: Jamie (Tammy) and Jason (Sherri) Collins, Shea and Cody Wells, and Joseph and Erica Palmer; great-grandchildren Keira and Tegan Collins, and Jaden and Abigail Collins; good friends and family David and Carol Marshall; and sister-in-law Ruby Barber; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mom served in WWII and she said she was everybody’s friend because she was the “payroll clerk”. She was a life long member of the Rebekah Lodge No.4. At Dorothy’s request, there will be no funeral service. Cremation will take place with memorialization to follow at Rosedale Cemetery in the spring. Wilfred Johnston

It is with joyous remembrance that we celebrate the life of Wilf Johnston. Few men could stand equal to this man's kind and gentle soul. A charming man with a quick wit, Wilf never stopped living and enjoying life. Whether it was adventures on the golf course or the tales told over endless coffees with friends or family, his was the life of simple pleasures that changed all who knew him. A compassionate and loving husband, father and grandfather, Wilf's influence and love became the center of the family and his greatest success. Perhaps his longevity can be attributed to his inability to stop moving no matter how many times he was told he should relax and enjoy his senior years. His ingenuity, ambition and willpower had no age restrictions. Born and raised on the family homestead near Riverhurst, SK, Wilf helped his father and brother tend to the farm. During difficult economic times, Wilf did as many other ambitious, strong young men did and rode the rails to neighbouring provinces to earn money for the family. Once returning from working as a ranch hand in Alberta, Wilf paid a visit to a childhood friend not knowing that decision would change his life. Wilf recounted a shadow in the doorway that shone like an angel. It seemed the pesky younger sister of his friend had grown up. A quietly romantic man, he spoke of his relationship with his beloved, departed wife Grace as the "greatest love story of all time" which from the first kiss started the happiest forty-one years of his life. One only needed to spend a few tender moments with him watching the twinkle of flooding memories in his blue eyes to understand what true love could be. Wilf and Grace were married on November 4, 1937. He started his married life selling grain in Gilroy and Langbank before switching his path to carpentry, first in Langbank and then later moving to Moose Jaw in 1951. Once there, he worked at the Military Base, Bird's Construction, Eaton's and finally finished his career with C&S Construction in 1980. Wilf was a lover of sports all his life, particularly curling, baseball and golf. He was a member of the Hilltop Curling Club and the Hillcrest and Lynbrook Golf Clubs making many lasting friendships over the years. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Club for many years. In later life when Wilf was no longer able to curl or golf himself, he enjoyed spending time following sports on TV. Seldom missing a Blue Jay game or a major golf tournament, the televised coverage of the curling a constant source of frustration for Wilf, he always finished his day with the crossword puzzle in the nightly paper and a cup of coffee. It was impossible not to fall in love with Wilf. A generous soul filled with unconditional love and radiating warmth, he charmed all who met him. Wilf spoke of not fearing death, but of being grateful for the rich life he lived. A gentleman to the end, his acceptance of the closing of his circle was yet another life lesson learned by his family. He passed from this world in a place of peace and tranquility during a long slumber in the night, reunited with the love of his life and joyfully remembered by the lives left behind. Until we meet again.
From his blood we were created, from his love we became better.
Wilfred Andrew Johnston was predeceased by his parents William and Jane, brother Tom and his wife Grace on April 21, 1979. Remembered with love by his children Jack (Audrey) - Niagara Falls, Dianne (Barclay) Cant - Kamloops and Gail Carpentier - Moose Jaw; beloved grandchildren Andy (Danielle), Lisa, Brent (Sherry), Dennis (Tara), Michelle (Derrick), Stephanie (Kyle) and Kristin; his cherished great-grandchildren Alysha, John, Brett, Aisha, Jackson, Amanda, Harrison and Logan. Wilf is also survived by numerous extended family members and friends with special mention going to Uncle Bruce, Aunt Audrey, Pete, Val, Ann and Deb for their continued support and visits. The family would also like to thank the “angels” who took such wonderful care of Wilf during his short time at Extendicare. A private family celebration of Wilf’s life will take place this summer. Colin Roberts

Colin William Roberts, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on January 10, 2009 in Moose Jaw at the age of 73. Colin was born in Moose Jaw and grew up on the family farm in the Tuxford area. After his father's death, he took over the operation of the farm where he worked tirelessly and innovatively. Responsible stewardship of the land was very important to him. Colin also owned and managed Air Waves Radio and TV in Moose Jaw for over two decades. Throughout his life he was active in the community and his church. He belonged to Doric Lodge, was a member of the Kinsmen Club and was actively involved on the Band Festival Committee for many years. Skiing and golfing were favourite pastimes. He especially treasured time spent with his young grandchildren. Family and friends will remember Colin's sense of humour, which he retained even throughout his struggle with lung disease. Colin was predeceased by his parents, William and Flora, and sister Joan. He is survived by his wife Gwen, daughter Rhea (John Shaw) and grandchildren, Liam and Georgia of Lethbridge, and sister-in-law Faye Ferguson of Toronto. The Service of Remembrance will be held at St.Aidan’s Anglican Church, 124 First Ave. NE., on Thursday January 15, 2009 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Betty Bradley and Reverend Allen Doerksen will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so may make a donation to the Saskatchewan Lung Association, 1231 – 8th Street East, Saskatoon, SK S7H OS5.
