Victoria Benko a long time resident of Valley View Centre passed away on Wednesday June3, 2009 at the age of eighty-one. Victoria was born in Yorkton January 26, 1928. A private Graveside service at Rosedale Cemetery will be held with Fr. Yurij Lazurko, Priest of the Assumption Ukrainian Catholic Church officiating. In memory of Victoria a tree will be planted at Besant Park.
ALEXANDER WRIGHT
ALEXANDER WRIGHT of Moose Jaw, passed away on March 31, 2003. Predeceased by his wife, Mavis in September, his father, William in 1957 and mother Lucy in 1971, he is survived by his daughters Beverly Wright, Moose Jaw, Barbara Wright (Terry Stodler), Saskatoon, his son William Wright, Regina, his sister May (Ed) Thurston, Lethbridge, Alberta, cousin Lucy Fox, Victoria, B.C. and relatives in Saskatoon, Lethbridge, Victoria as well as in Missouri, Colorado and Florida. Alex was born in Plato, Saskatchewan on July 13, 1920. He grew up and spent most of his life in Moose Jaw. During his youth, he played football and baseball, excelling as a pitcher and playing in numerous sports days in the area. Alex also played snooker as a youth and continued to play competitively for many years into his retirement. In May 1940, Alex volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served in Ireland during WWII as a Sergeant in 423 Squadron, servicing Sunderland Flying Boats assigned to Costal Command in the North Atlantic. Following the war, Alex returned to Moose Jaw and worked at several jobs in Moose Jaw, Winnipeg and Trail, B.C. before finally becoming Manager of the Beneficial Finance office in Moose Jaw for 28 years. Alex retired in 1986. Alex met and married Mavis in 1953. Mavis was his best friend and confidant until her death in September 2001. Alex and Mavis shared a love of baseball and watched Blue Jay games together during their retirement. Alex also enjoyed growing tomatoes and green beans and had an avid interest in nature and history. Alex had opinions on a variety of subjects and was never afraid to share his opinion with anyone. A few words or paragraphs cannot begin to do justice to a life that spanned almost 83 years and included, the Great Depression, World War II, a president’s assassination, men landing on the moon and the internet. Dad kept his sense of humour until his final days. His advice usually turned out to be correct even though we often did not know it at the time. We will miss him. We express our thanks to the nurses and staff at Pioneer Lodge and Moose Jaw Union Hospital for their kind care of both of our parents in their final days. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at 1:30 pm in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Gary Johnson will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pioneer Lodge, Moose Jaw, in the names of Alex and Mavis Wright. In living memory of Alex, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
WINNIFRED REITAN
On Monday, May 10, 2010, Winnifred Grace Reitan passed away suddenly at the age of 82 years. Winnifred was born December 12, 1927 in Assiniboia. She grew up on the family farm in the Leeville District. On March 10, 1948, Winnifred married George Reitan. The couple farmed for 35 years till moving to Assiniboia. After 11 years, they moved to Moose Jaw where she has since resided. Winnifred’s favorite pastimes were gardening, sewing, crafts and needlework. Win enjoyed travelling and camping with her husband George. They travelled many miles together in their motor home and fifth-wheel trailer. She is predeceased by her husband George of 52 years, her parents, Simon and Elizabeth Stalker, her two brothers, Jack Stalker and Donald Stalker; brothers-in-law Bill Peterson and Tory Tronrud, and sister-in-law Reta Stalker. She leaves to mourn two sisters, Minnie Peterson and Beatrice Tronrud, and one brother, Bruce Stalker, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel, Moose Jaw on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2, or the Alzheimer’s Association, #301 – 2550 12th Ave., Regina, S4P 3X1. WILLIAM (BILL) NIDESH
William (Bill) Nidesh passed away peacefully at the age of 99 years on June 18, 2009, in the wonderful care at Pioneer’s Housing, Moose Jaw. Bill came to Canada as a young man from the Ukraine. He worked for CP Rail for 43 years. He is predeceased by his wife Rose and his daughter Marilyn. His sons, Duane and Merv (Sharon); along with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survived him. Bill took pride in his work and his family. He had a long and productive life and a long and enjoyable retirement. A Celebration of Bill’s life will take place and will be announced at a later date. BEATRICE SLACK
Beatrice Slack was born July 29, 1915 in Moose Jaw, Sask. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family April 24, 2010. Beatrice was a resident of Moose Jaw all her life. She attended St. Agnes School, Convent of Sion and graduated from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing class of 1937. She married her loving husband Frank and spent time raising a family, eventually renewing a fulfilling nursing career, working until retirement. She was a member of the C.W.L. and Providence Place Auxiliary. Mum’s retirement years were kept busy helping her family, gardening, quilting and traveling. She is predeceased by her husband Frank, her parents Michael and Catherine Kane, son James, sisters Nora Dunleavy and Helen Hill, sisters-in-law Kay Slack, Jenny Wallace, Marguerite Slack brothers-in-law Harold O'Byrne, Harry Slack, Bren Gillen, Joe Dunleavy, and Layton Wallace. She will be missed by her children Harold (Barbara) - Christopher Lake, Frank - Moose Jaw, Louise Heilman - Moose Jaw, Kate (Bob) - Saskatoon, Barb Burnett (Doug) - Moose Jaw; her grandchildren: Ed (Angela), Terry (Kim), Loralee Wirtz (Roger), Patrick (Connie), Mark Heilman (Susan), Darlene Heilman (David), John Heilman (Annette) Kurt, Brad and Hailey (Jason) Burnett; great-grandchildren: Darlene, Josh (Laura), Lindsay (Anders), David, Christopher, Kelsey, Kayanna, Tucker, Rebecca, Chloe, Cody, Sophia and Sara. She is also survived by her sisters Mary O'Byrne, Kay (Bill) Graham - Moose Jaw, brothers-in-law Alvin Slack - Calgary, and Alf Hill - Regina; sister-in-law Lucy Gillen - Adelaide, Australia; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Bea's life will be held at Church of our Lady 566 Vaughan St., on Thursday April 29, 2010 at 11:00 am. Reverend Father Carlos Jimenez will be the Celebrant. Private Family memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to a charity of choice would be appreciated. Mrs. Mary Legare, age 96, of Regina, formerly of Moose Jaw, passed away on August 19, 2010. A family graveside service will be held at Rosedale Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Edward N. Legare.
Audrey Olivia Jobling (nee: Jacobson )
It is with sad hearts that the family of Audrey Jobling bids farewell to our cherished Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother who passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat, Alberta on February 8, 2010 at the age of 83 years. She is survived by her sons Jim (Mary Anne) Jobling of Lundar, MB, Calvin (Amy) Jobling of Medicine Hat, AB and daughter Lael (Brian) Dyck of La Salle, MB; and by her grandchildren: Tony, Caylen, Kristin, Tyler, Stefan, Nicole, Katerina (Jobling) Biech, and Erica Jobling as well as two great-grandchildren, Sapphire Olivia Jobling-L’Heureux and Cameron Nelson Jobling. Audrey was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Norman. And by her granddaughter Nancy Jean, daughter Catherine Ann, great-granddaughter Audrey Elizabeth and Audrey’s older sister Grace, brothers Ron and Allan Jacobson and sister Dorothy Patteson. She is survived by her brother Howard (Joy) Jacobson. Audrey was born in Moose Jaw, third child and daughter of Alfred and Eva (Probert) Jacobson. The family lived on Ominica Street and later moved to Stadacona Street where they lived for many years. In 1937, she, older sister Grace and younger brother Howard, were stricken by typhoid fever. After recovering, Audrey resumed attending Alexander School and Central High School. She was a top student excelling in sports (especially speed skating) and academics. Along with her family she enjoyed attending the Salvation Army church, singing hymns and playing music. She enjoyed helping out at CHAB (the radio station founded by her father) and working at Eaton’s Department Store. Norman first noticed Audrey while skating on the Moose Jaw Creek. He often recalled the outfit she wore that day along with her long-blade ‘racers’. When finally they met a year later while skating at the Moose Jaw Arena, both were completely smitten with each other. After Norman’s WWII service they married and began their life together on South Hill where they raised a family of four. Career advancement took them to other parts of Canada and around the world until retirement to Victoria in 1985. Later they returned to the prairies in 2000. Audrey’s family wishes to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Hirsch and wonderful staff at Sunnyside Haven Care Centre at South Country Village in Medicine Hat. They took such good care of Audrey in her last years. We will remember their warmth and loving kindness towards Mom. A private family service was held in Moose Jaw February 13, at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel, officiated by Major Don Law of the Salvation Army. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made through donations to the Alzheimer’s Association. KEN BEATTIE
KEN BEATTIE passed away with his family by his side on Monday, December 10, 2007. Born August 30, 1922 in Coderre, Saskatchewan, he married Elsie (Toody) in 1951. Ken worked many of his early years for lifelong friend Maurice Beaudette on the family farm. He also helped his dad drive gravel trucks and had worked for Moose Jaw Cartage, but he was best known for his twenty-eight years with Moose Jaw City Transit from which he retired. Ken enjoyed going for coffee with friends, playing cards, brain teaser puzzles and Saturday morning auctions. He looked forward to going fishing with his buddies, kids and grandkids and had even camped twenty-five consecutive years at Buffalo Pound Park. Predeceased by his parents, John and Mazel, wife, Elsie (Toody), and brother, Leonard, Ken is survived by sisters: Dorthy, Thora, Tress (Herold), Lenora (Jim); sons: Terry (Mary), Len (Linda), and Marshall (Gail); grandchildren: Melissa (Bryan), Travis (Tasha), Stephanie, Dillan and Ryan, Greg, Angela, Stacy, Nicole (Dean), Darren (Kristi); great-grandchildren: Justin, Chelsey, Hunter, Dagan, Mathew, Amber, Abby, Rydleigh and Sawyer. Following cremation, A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 14, 2007 at 10a.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Della Ferguson will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2.
