Edna was born August 11, 1928 at Mossbank, Saskatchewan, the oldest child to Theodore and Emily (Heymer) Haraldson. She was raised on a farm near Mossbank and started school there. In 1939 her family moved to the Kinloch area. She first worked in Kelvington in 1946 and then at SAN in Saskatoon. From there she continued working as a nurse’s aide in Swift Current, Assiniboia and Port Arthur, Ontario. She married the love of her life on November 22, 1952 in Port Arthur. As well as being a dedicated housewife, hard working farm wife and caring mother, she worked, over the years, for Home Care, CanaDays, Extendicare and Ruth’s Variety Shop. She encouraged her children to participate in many activities which included swimming, music, school teams and choir. Edna always enjoyed sewing, knitting and gardening and when the children all moved from home she became an avid quilter. She loved when all the family would come home for holidays and special occasions. Some of her favorite travels were her holiday to England and visiting eldest son Jack in California. She truly enjoyed time spent in her sewing room plus any fabric store, quilting bee or quilt show. She was a member for many years of Grandview United Church quilting group and the Qurazy Quilters. She was also a founding member of Moose Jaw Prairie Hearts Quilting Guild. Edna, through all these organizations, had many treasured friends and in her final days, she wished her many friends “Happy Sewing”. FLORENCE CURRAN
Florence Curran (Spencer) of Pioneer Lodge, a long time Moose Jaw resident passed away peacefully on November 2, 2007 at 90 years of age. Florence was born on the family homestead in the Dunkirk district on August 18, 1917 to Albert Spencer and Mary Spencer (Bott). Flo’s early years were spent on the family farm. After her father passed away when Florence was four, she, her Mom and her three siblings worked very hard to keep the farm operating. By the time he was 14, Flo’s older brother Phil had taken over the farm and the whole family continued to work together in the true pioneer spirit of the time. Flo was an energetic and lively youngster. She was a good athlete, always enjoying district field days, especially the high jump. Florence was introduced to Walter Curran at a local dance in Dunkirk, and a wedding followed on October 2, 1939. In 1941 the couple moved to Moose Jaw, where Walter sold life insurance. By 1945 they had purchased the Swing Inn, a popular drive-in restaurant in River Park which they operated together until 1954, and held an interest in until 1973. In 1952 Walter and Flo returned to the vocation they had grown up with - farming. They purchased land in the Mitchellton area and for the next thirty years made grain farming the center of their many pursuits, while continuing to live in Moose Jaw. Florence had the fine qualities that we have learned to associate with those hardy Saskatchewan people who grew up during the Depression. She was a hard worker and a dedicated Mother, who mixed practical values with the love of a good time, especially when family and friends were involved. Florence took tremendous pride in the accomplishments of her children and then later her grandchildren. Whether they were playing baseball, basketball or hockey, singing in concerts, playing in bands or performing in musicals, Walter and Flo could be found in the audience supporting them. We could all learn from the pleasure Flo derived from a game of marbles at the kitchen table, a singsong around the piano or an afternoon in the garden. For her the simple joys of life were the most enduring and joyous. Until the start of 2007, Florence lived in Mulberry Estates for three years. She spent many happy hours with treasured friend Esther Bayne. We will all miss Flo’s quiet and content ways. Florence was predeceased by her husband Walter Benjamin Curran, her eldest son Albert Curran, her sister Ruth Martin (George), her brothers Phil Spencer and Frank Spencer (Martha). She will be deeply missed by her children: Marlene Hooker (Lloyd) of Calgary, Verna Curran Berntson (Doug) of Saskatoon, Leonard Curran (Beverley) of Moose Jaw and Glenn Curran of Red Deer; nine grandchildren: Jody (Bob), Shane (Shauna), Allison (Jae-Wan), Nathan, Meghan (Trevor), Jennifer, Jaymi, Mary and Catherine; and three great-grandchildren: Aiden, Victoria and Carson. Funeral services will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel on Friday, November 9, 2007 at 10:30 am. Della Ferguson will officiate. Cremation will follow at Prairie Memorial Crematorium with private family memorialization at a later date. Visitation for Family and Friends will take place on Thursday evening 7-9 pm at the funeral home. Memorials for Chip and Dale Housing, Inc. at #23 – 445 Winnipeg Street, Regina, SK, S4R 8P2 would be appreciated. In living memory of Florence, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
