SERGIE BASARSKY
Sergie was the youngest of four children born to Feofan and Natalia Basarsky. From Odessa, Russia, they immigrated to Canada in the early 1900’s. They homesteaded in the Burstall area in Western Saskatchewan and had four children….One daughter Val, and three sons Nick, Leon, and then Sergie. Sergie was born on the homestead in 1926, the day after Christmas. He spent his formative years there and eventually moved to the Yorkton area where he courted and married Anne Koroluk. After 3 years of marriage they had 2 children… Peter, now of Moose Jaw, and a younger daughter that died at one year of age. Sergie soon join the RCAF, serving in the Ottawa area, returned to Saskatchewan to begin farming north of Yorkton, and eventually added a job with the Government of Saskatchewan. Each job he faced was with unbounded energy and inner strength. No job was too big, none too difficult. Each day was faced with an unending optimism. His secret for optimism was hard work. 10–12 hour days were common. He also became a pillar of strength in our family: If you were ill, he could help nurse you, if you were tired and hurting he could cheer and revitalize you. He could help make the most difficult decisions, easier. He was the center around which the family rotated. Really, “The Old Rugged Cross.” He had the answers for every problem; not surprisingly they often centered on his own self-sacrifice. In the end his life may be counted among the most successful possible. Everything he touched eventually worked out. Age finally overtook him, and when he passed it was with strength and grace. He was loved and respected by all that passed through his life. He leaves to grieve, his wife Anne, son Peter, grandson Billy and many nieces and nephews. May he finally have peace. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapelette on Saturday March 7, 2009 at 10:00 am. Reverend David Moore will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. In living memory of Sergie, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
