ALBERT EDWARD PARTRIDGE
October 16, 1920 – June 2, 2009

MR. ALBERT “BERT” PARTRIDGE passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Bert was born in Worcester, England to Beatrice (Leach) and Edward Partridge. They immigrated to Canada when he was four years old. The family started out in Montreal moving to try their hand at farming in Indian Head and settled into farming in Edgely. Bert met Luvinia in Fort Qu'Appelle when she was working at Fort San. He charmed her into marrying him November 10, 1947. They lived for a short time in Craik, settling in Moose Jaw in 1951 to raise their boys. Bert had a long career in highway construction. He worked for thirty years with Ramsey Bird Construction and finished his working career with Cypress Paving. Upon retirement he enjoyed many road trips and camping with Luvinia. He loved spending time with his coffee buddies right up until he was unable to make it there. Predeceased by his parents, Beatrice and Edward; brothers: Henry and George and twin brother and sister, Arthur and Freda, Bert is survived by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Luvinia, his two sons Leonard and Gerald (Karen); granddaughters: Whitney and Mackenzie. A private family Interment will take place. A Memorial Tea in Bert’s memory will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009; 2-4 p.m. at the W. J. Jones & Son Family Centre, 262 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Memorials to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, S6H 7K7 would be appreciated. In living memory of Bert, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

VELMA MacPHERSON

After a lengthy illness, VELMA IRENE MacPHERSON (BROWN) passed away on March 26, 2004. Left behind to remember her are her son Delbert, daughter Charlene and her “special angel” Mary Pohl. Her grandchildren Danielle, Alexa, Erin, Nicole, and Alex also survive Velma. Velma was born at Brownlee, Saskatchewan. In 1940 she married Sandy (Alexander Robert) MacPherson who predeceased her in 1978. Together they farmed seven miles north of Moose Jaw. Velma, who taught for thirty-five years around the Moose Jaw area, was a very capable, organized woman who managed to teach, obtain a degree, raise two children, and maintain a home all at the same time. After retirement in addition to enjoying her “home and garden” she was active in Zion United Church and traveled extensively. The last few years she lived in Edson, Alberta. Her Funeral Service will be held at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Bob McElhinney. Interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening, 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Canadian Association for Community Living, Kinsmen Building, York University, 4700 Keele Street, Toronto, Ontario, M3J 1P3. In living memory of Velma, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

ESTHER BRETON

ESTHER OPAL BRETON of Moose Jaw, passed away Monday, August 1, 2005 at the age of 90 years. Esther was born August 24, 1914 at Lake Alma, Saskatchewan . Predeceased by her husband, James and five daughters, her parents and two brothers, Floyd and Clyd Lamoureux; two sisters: Letha Tangedal and Mabel Morrison, and a sister-in-law, Rose Breton. Esther is survived by three daughters and three sons: Mavis Zy ba of Moose Jaw, Lois Mitchell (Terry), Shirley (Richard) Baum, Floyd and Dave Breton, Jack (Elaine) Breton – all of Moose Jaw; fourteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; one sister, Beatrice Mitchell of Bengough, one sister-in-law, Laura Smith of Calgary, as well as many nieces and nephews. After her retirement, Esther enjoyed seven years with the Zion United Church Brittian Unit. She also was a member of Cosmo Centre for a short while. Esther enjoyed playing shuffle board, darts, dancing and looked forward to attending tea’s and dinner’s. Most of all Esther enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Friday, August 5, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. Cremation will follow and private family interment will take place at the Rosedale Cemetery . Visitation for family and friends will take place Thursday evening 7-9 p.m. at the Funeral Home. For those so wishing, memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2 . In living memory of Esther, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

DON CALFAS

Lieutenant Colonel (ret.) Donald Calfas C.D. was born July 20, 1922 in Regina and died October 10, 2005 in Moose Jaw. Don married Betty Bennetton on September 27, 1952. He was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Gladys, his wife Betty and brother-in-law Gordon Pritchard. Don leaves to mourn his wife Darlene Dobson; sons Kim (Maggie) Calfas and Buck Calfas; his grandchildren Amber (Tim) Wilk, Serina Calfas (Chris), Stephanie and Christopher Calfas. He will be missed by Darlene’s children Mark (Tracy) Dobson, Darrell (Rose) Dobson and Debbie (Greg) Thompson and the grandchildren Cody, Katherine and Andrew Thompson, Morgan, Brett and Jacob Dobson. Don is survived by his sister June Pritchard and nieces Cory (Dave) Rodgers and Krystal (Dean) Wilberger and their families. Don grew up in Moose Jaw, attended Alexander elementary school, Empire school and Tech High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1942. Don was associated with the Saskatchewan Dragoons Regimental Association, Royal Canadian Legion, Army, Navy and Air force Veterans, Eagles Club, Knights of Pythias Lodge, was a board member of the Ina Grafton Gage Home. Don spent over 70 years in the Scouting movement. He mentored many boys over the years. Don owned and ran Buffalo Shell Service for many years and made many friends while there. He was the Commanding Officer of the Saskatchewan Dragoons in 1970 when the Guidon was presented. Don’s hobbies were fishing and silk screening. He loved family vacations and movie nights with Darlene. Don held his family in highest regard. They were very dear to him. The Funeral Service will be held Friday, October 14, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, Moose Jaw. Reverend Frank Mitchell will officiate. Interment will take place in the family plot, Rosedale Cemetery. Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites conducted at the chapel by Stan Skrill, Moose Jaw Branch #59. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday evening (7-9 p.m.) at the Funeral Home. Memorials for the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, 268 High Street West, Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 1S8 would be appreciated. In living memory of Don, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

DARWIN CLACE

Darwin W. Clace, passed away January 20, 2008 at the age of 46 years, after a valiant struggle with MS. Darwin is predeceased by his parents, Bill and Janet Clace. He will be sadly missed by his six brothers and sisters, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and best friend Ted. A Private Service will take place, with memorialization to follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Della Ferguson will officiate. For those so wishing, memorial donations may be made to the Providence Place Rec. Club, 100 2nd Ave. N.E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1B8. In living memory of Darwin, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

WENDY TONDEVOLD

Wendy Lea Tondevold (nee, Boncescu), passed away suddenly at her home on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the age of 44 years. Wendy was born in Moose Jaw in 1959, receiving her education here, and going on to receive her Licensed Practical Nursing Certificate. She worked at Valley View Centre, the Providence Hospital, and Extendicare. Wendy’s leisure time passion and hobby was her horses and dogs. She is survived by her long time companion Ross Morrison; her parents, Ron and Yvonne Boncescu; her children, Cory, Dayna, and Tanya; one grandchild; an aunt, Sandy Deobold; uncle, Lanie Erickson – all of Moose Jaw; and foster child, Augustine Bukang in Indonesia. In keeping with Wendy’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Private memorialization will take place at a later date. Memorials to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, Moose Jaw, S6H 7K7, would be appreciated. In living memory of Wendy, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

SHERWOOD (SI) SIMMONS

Sherwood Woodrow (Si) Simmons, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2003 at the age of 84 years. Si was born on April 25, 1919 in Swift Current, Sask. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served until 1946. Following his service he returned to Swift Current where he met and married Beatrice Speck. In 1952 the family made the move to Moose Jaw where he worked at the B.A. Si later worked as a Union Representative for OCAW, SEIU, and was involved with the Sask. Federation Union Labour Council and a member of the Labour Council. He owned and operated the East End Laundry Mart for 20 years. Throughout the years he worked as a Steam Engineer at the R.C.M.P. Training Centre in Regina, at McMillan Bloedel and the Fort Qu’Appelle Sans. Si loved horseback riding and enjoyed working with his horses. He was also an excellent crib players at the Royal Canadian Legion and won several championships. Si was interested in politics and was active with the N.D.P. He also attended a conference with Prince Phillip. Si was also an active member of the Moose Jaw Housing Board for the last 10 years. He leaves to cherish his memory: Brenda (Wayne) Kirby; Lynne Simmons; Wendy (Mark) Place; Gail Appelgren; Donna (Rene) Forster; and grandchildren: Corrine (Ben), Gordon (Sonya), Blayne, Penny (Dean), Nichole, Megan, Alexander, and Amanda; great-grandchildren: Christina, Robin, Lisa, Alexis, and Trista; his sister, Shirley Moore; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; as well as great-great-nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Si was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice (Bea); his parents, Albert and Marie Simmons; and sisters: Orvilla Simmons and Geraldine Bickner. Funeral Services will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 1:30 pm. Padre Doug Shepherd will officiate. Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites will be conducted by Chuck MacMillan. Visitation will take place Monday evening 7–9 pm at the Funeral Home. Memorializaiton will take place at Rosedale Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 0E1, the Sask. Heart & Stroke Foundation, Box 521, Moose Jaw, S6H 4P2, or a charity of choice would be appreciated. In living memory of Si, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
