Loving brother, husband, father, and grandfather, devoted friend; always a willing mentor, Irvine leaves behind a legacy of kindness, inspiration, wisdom, and community service. His tireless efforts will be greatly missed. His good natured smile will always be cherished by his loving family who will miss him dearly. A Celebration of Irvine ’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Monday February 2, 2009 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Memorialization will take place in the Barbados, as was Irvine ’s wish. In living memory of Irvine, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
ERNESTINE McBRIDE
Ernestine Dubord Reekie McBride, passed away peacefully as her daughter Beverly prayed the rosary with her on July 26, 2007. Ernestine was known to many as the “Hostess with the Mostest”. Family and friends meant a lot to her and she would drop what she was doing if called to help. She enjoyed music and dancing, and was a member of the Cosmo Senior Choir, and a long time member of the CWL. She is predeceased by her daughter Brenda Marie, husband George Reekie, son-in-law Robert Steppler, and her second husband Elmo McBride. Ernestine will be sadly missed by her daughters, Darlene (Gerald) Healey, Margaret (Allan) Gawley, and Beverly Steppler, and sons Bob (Wendy) Reekie, and Ed (Julia) Reekie; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Capilano Court for their loving care, as well as the staff at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Palliative Care. An Evening Prayer Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Sunday July 29, 2007 at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on Monday July 30, 2007 at 10:30 am. Father Francis Folleh will be Mass Celebrant Memorialization will take place at Sunset Cemetery at a later date. SAMUEL DOWNEY
MR. SAMUEL DOWNEY, age 84, of Moose Jaw went home to be with his Lord on October 28, 2007, with family by his side. Sam was born in Moose Jaw and was educated at City View School south of Moose Jaw and at McKague, Saskatchewan. At age nineteen he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force serving four years. In 1946 he married Isabell Bousquet at Tisdale, Saskatchewan. Sam worked at several locations before he and Isabell moved to Moose Jaw in 1948, working mainly in the mechanical and welding fields. Sam and Isabell raised their four children in Moose Jaw: Shelda, Ed, Pat and Beverley. He was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Mary Downey, son Ed, and brothers: Bill, Roy, Art, Dick and Jim. Sam is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Isabell; daughters: Shelda (Bernie) and Beverley, son, Pat; grandchildren: Wenda and Tara; Bryce, Laurel and Corrin; Darla and Jeff; Dan and Mike; seventeen great-grandchildren, daughter-in-law Linda; two sisters: Jean and Dorothy, and extended family, Patty and Les. Following cremation, A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Keith Gonyou will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. For those so wishing, memorials may be made to Moose Jaw Alliance Church Missionary Fund, Box 353, Moose Jaw, S6H 4N9. Sam spent his life in dedication and service to God. VERNA A. BYFORD
VERNA AILEEN BYFORD passed away Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the age of 91 years. Born in Moose Jaw December 14, 1914, Verna received her education at Boharm Public School and high school by correspondence. She was a member of the United Church. Predeceased by her parents, Cora and Nelson Switzer and step-mother, Lillian; husband, Arthur; three sisters and one brother, Verna is survived by her two daughters: Joan (Eldon) North of Moose Jaw and Heather (Donald) Johns of Regina; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Myrtle Snider of Richmond, B.C., and Mary Lawrence of Moose Jaw, as well as several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E. Linda Owens will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated. In living memory of Verna, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. MR. CLARENCE DONAUER, age 70, of Moose Jaw passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2006. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel. Reverend Frank Mitchell will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery . Memorials for the Alzheimer Association, #301 – 2550 – 12th Ave., Regina, S4P 3X1 would be appreciated. HELEN ANDERSON
HELEN ANDERSON (nee: McIntyre) born August 15, 1916, passed away peacefully in Moose Jaw Union Hospital on August 12, 2007. Predeceased by her husband, Albert (Bert) Anderson, her brother, Horace (Mac) McIntyre; sisters: Arlene (Lawrence) Henderson and Jean (Bob) Anderson. Helen is survived by her children: Lynn (Ted) Jest of Vancouver, BC, Mac (Lori) Anderson of Moose Jaw and her two granddaughters: Christa (Aaron) Vassie of Okotoks, AB, and Sarah Anderson of Moose Jaw. Upon graduation from Central Collegiate, Helen continued her studies at the Normal School (now SIAST) where she was also employed for many years. Helen and Bert were married in 1942; Helen always spoke fondly of their time together in the Queen Charlotte Islands before Bert returned overseas as a Canloan Officer. She held dear to her heart her childhood friends whom she remained in contact with throughout her 90 years. Having lived on 7th Avenue N.W. for 58 years, she touched the lives of many neighbours and carried on that neighbourly tradition with constant visits from her grandchildren and their friends. Helen was a member of the Moose Jaw Public Library since 1929 and read thousands of books. Her brilliant mind and wisdom remained with her right up to the time of her passing. A Celebration of Helen's life will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Della Ferguson will be the celebrant. GLADYS CHRISTINE GUY (nee Fjaagesund). Born May 31, 1920, passed away March 6, 2007 after a brief illness. Predeceased by her husband, Roy, parents, Ingaberg and Christopher, parents-in-law, Eliza and Harry Guy, daughter-in-law, Rose; sisters: Alma, Agnes, Clara, Fredericka and Lillian; brothers: Ivor and Lloyd; sisters-in-law: June, Ethel, Enid and Doris; brothers-in-law: Bob, Art, Len, Johnny, Les, George and Hugh. Left to mourn her passing are her sons: Gary and Garth (Dee); grandchildren: Darlene, Duane and Christine, daughter, Lynn (Pat Reilly) – Medicine Hat, sister, Edlin David – Eastend, brother, Marvin – Moose Jaw; sisters-in-law: Frances and Pearl – Moose Jaw, brothers-in-law, Claude – Edmonton and Bud of B.C., as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 9, 2007 at 1 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Linda Owens will officiate. Interment will follow at Grace United Church Cemetery, Coderre. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday evening 7-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
