CY KNIGHT
It is with deep regret that the family of CYRIL (CY) KNIGHT announces his passing on May 27, 2004. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Cy was considered one of the most popular radio personalities in the province. In his radio days, he was the host of CHAB’s Mailbag program, a combination of entertainment and public service, heard every afternoon Monday to Saturday. In those years when many farms were without telephones, the Mailbag carried messages from people storm-stayed and stranded in Moose Jaw to anxious families in rural Saskatchewan. Cy was always grateful for the overwhelming response from his listeners to his fund-raising appeals, especially to the annual Christmas Party Fund for the children of the Orange Home at Indian Head. Cy was also host of CHAB’s weekly Sunday At Home program. Cy played a number of musical instruments, and from his teen years was usually part of a local band. He was also a popular emcee. For many years he sang in the choir of Minto United Church, and later in the choir of St. John’s Anglican Church. He was a member of the Canadian Club and Nature Moose Jaw. As a steam locomotive buff he had a large collection of books, films and recordings of steam locomotives and was a member of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association. Cy is survived by his beloved wife Leith, his brother Reg of Dawson Creek, a brother-in-law John Docherty of Moose Jaw, as well as nieces and nephews and their families. In keeping with Cy’s wishes, a private graveside service conducted by the Reverend John Carley of Minto United Church, will be held later in June when the cremated remains will be interred in the family plot at Rosedale Cemetery. Memorial donations in Cy’s name may be made to the Wakamow Valley Authority, Box 1266, Moose Jaw, S6H 4P9.
