Antony "Tony" Martin Trobert
On Saturday, March 7th, 2009, Antony "Tony" Martin Trobert passed away at Tatagwa View Long Term Care Facility in Weyburn at the age of 71 years. Predeceased by his parents, Anna (Tuchscherer) and Lawrence Trobert. Tony will be remembered by his loving wife, Lorraine Trobert of Weyburn and their family: daughter, Sheila (Cedric) Guillemin and their children, Nicole (Ryan), Brendan and Austin of Forget; son, Jerry (Celeste) Trobert of Tribune; daughter, Kimberly Jo (Victor Koszman) and their children, Ashley, Nathan and Baillie Jo of Weyburn; daughter, Marnie (Don Campbell) and her children, Alyssa, Sarah, Taylor and Ryan of Saskatoon; sister, Irene (Conrad) Weinrauch; brothers: Norman (Lynn), Frank (Kathy), Joe (Gloria) and Mel (Donna) and their families all of Estevan. Tony was born September 20th, 1937 in Estevan, the oldest son of Lawrence and Anna Trobert. He attended school at Diamond Willow near Englefield, then school in Tribune. Tony had one sister and four brothers: Irene, Norman, Frank, Joe and Melvin. His younger years were spent working on the farm and oil rigs in Alberta. On January 25th, 1964 he married Lorraine Larson of Maxim in Tribune. They lived on the farm north of Tribune. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Sheila, Jerry, Kimberly and Marnie. Tony enjoyed farm sales where he liked to wheel and deal on things, and visiting with local farmers. He also made leather belts. Tony helped build the Tribune Catholic Church in 1952, and he was a faithful attender which continued when he became a resident of Tatagwa View Long Term Care Facility in Weyburn. Tony's greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be dearly remembered and sadly missed by all he knew and loved. Prayers were said Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn with Fr. Gerry Bauche presiding. The funeral mass was held Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Tribune with Father Gerry Bauche officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Tribune. Pallbearers were: Brendan Guillemin, Austin Guillemin, Taylor O'Neill, Ryan O'Neill, Nathan Koszman and Ryan Matthews. Howard Edwin Lockhart
The passing of Howard Lockhart, age 87 years, of Stoughton, occurred at St. Joseph's Hospital in Estevan, on March 6, 2009. Howard Edwin Lockhart was the son of Lewis Moore Lockhart and Ida Adelaide Lockhart, nee Woodbury, formerly of Griffin. Howard was predeceased by his sisters Edna and Irene, his brothers Fred and Earl and his daughter, Linda May. He is survived by his son, James (Jim) Lewis Lockhart of Claresholm, Alberta; Jim's wife Diane; their children: Michael (Mike) Lockhart and Danielle Aimee Slettede; and by two great grandsons, Joel James and Karsen Slettede. Howard will be fondly remembered by them; by his friends from the Weyburn, Griffin, Stoughton and Arcola districts; by those nieces and nephews and other family members who knew him and by his very dear friend and caregiver, Claire Hall, of Stoughton. Claire's caring and enduring friendship were of special importance to Howard and all family members offer their gratitude and heartfelt condolences to her. Howard lived and farmed in the Weyburn district for many years. He then moved to Stoughton to be near his daughter, residing there until his passing. A defining moment of Howard's life was his enlistment for overseas military service. He was wounded after spending an uninterrupted year on the frontline in Italy, and was forced to return to home before the war ended, but not before he and his fellow soldiers had played a vital role in the campaign which led to the liberation of that country during WWII. Funeral services were held in Grace United Church, Stoughton on Tuesday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. with Deborah Laforet officiant. Friends and family were invited to a luncheon in the Stoughton Legion Hall immediately following the service. Interment of cremated remains in the Griffin Municipal Cemetery followed the luncheon. In lieu of flowers, those so wishing may make donations to the St. Joseph's Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary, Estevan, in Howard's memory. Margaret Laverne Mott (nee Coleman)
Margaret Laverne Mott (nee Coleman) passed away at Pasqua Hospital, Regina on March 12, 2009. She is survived by sons Morris (Raymonde) of Brandon, Darwin (Gail) of Meadow Lake, and Vernon (Romanita) of Asker, Norway; grandchildren Trena (Adam) Doyle, Melanie, Shelley, Kenny, Nikolai, and Romain Mott; great grandchildren Carson and Austin Doyle; brother Frank (Eva) Coleman; sisters Ethel (Louis) Toeppner, Lavica Mahnke; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ken Mott; parents Robert and Varo (nee Mitchell) Coleman; sisters Violet Wright, Ursula Hovland, Priscilla Wright. Laverne and her twin sister Lavica were the youngest of seven children born to Robert and Varo Coleman of the Froude district. Laverne attended Hudmore and Froude schools. After completing high school, she enrolled in the six week Normal School course in Regina. After graduation, she was hired at O'Brien School southwest of Stoughton. She taught for only one year. At a dance she had met Ken Mott, a farmer from the Crieff district north of Creelman. She decided her future would be with him. They married in July, 1945. For eight years they lived on the farm, then in 1953 moved to their new home in Creelman. Between 1946 and 1957 three sons were born, and while they grew up most of Laverne's time and energy were spent as a loving, supportive wife and mother. She was also very involved in community affairs. She played softball, curled, coached a son's baseball team when needed, acted as CGIT leader for a time, contributed to events such as fowl suppers and the annual Fair (her entries in baking, garden produce, pickles, and preserved fruits always took prizes). She especially shared with the community her impressive musical abilities. She was United Church organist for many years. She was a member of the church choir for more than forty years, including several as leader. She and Lavica performed vocal duets at dozens of weddings, graduations, funerals, and anniversaries in Creelman and nearby towns. By the mid 1970s the boys were leaving home, and Ken and Laverne found more time to attend concerts or plays, to travel, and especially to take up square and round and old time dancing. Then in 1982 Ken died. Laverne was devastated. She appreciated very much the support now offered by members of her immediate family, by relatives, by her dancing friends, curling friends, church members, and members of the little Creelman "Jug Band." She also became an enthusiastic follower of the activities of her grandchildren, and attended scores of school plays, musical recitals, dancing performances, basketball games, softball games, hockey games. In 1997 she moved to Regina. Soon she had grandchildren in Norway, and she visited them. Frequently she travelled to Creelman for birthday parties, funerals, the Fair, the Dinner Theatre and other events. She also became close to friends she had made in Regina, especially those at Whitmore Park United Church, in the Heritage Fiddlers, and in the Old Tyme Music Makers who entertained regularly at senior citizens' homes. Tears came to her eyes when she described people in wheel chairs moving with the music. In her final weeks, Laverne was grateful for care provided by doctors, nurses, home care workers, and she appreciated the flowers, cards, visits, and telephone calls from friends. Laverne's funeral was held in St. Andrew's United Church, Creelman on Monday, March 16 at 2:00 P.M. An online book of condolences may be signed at www.speersfuneralchapel.com. Kathleen "Kay" Marion Brown (nee Cuddington)
Brown, Kathleen "Kay" Marion, (nee: Cuddington) born July 1, 1920, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2009 at Weyburn Special Care Home. Predeceased by parents William and Rose Cuddington, Husband John (Jack) Brown (1998), brothers Thomas, William and David, and sisters Ellen Gardner, Alice Cuddington, and brother-in-law Charles Auld. Kay is survived by her children: Marion Arneson, and her family Lee (Kendra), Scott (Amanda) and Kimberley and their father Richard Arneson of Milestone; Beverley (Greg) Groff, and their family, Trevor (Jane) and Anika, Erin (Matt) and Whitney of Regina; Douglas (Linda) Brown, and their family, Mike and Jim of Regina; Robert Brown of Lewvan; sisters, Patricia Goncalves, Doris Aleksenko, and brother Arthur Cuddington, British Columbia; special cousins, Doug and Margaret Cuddington and their family; sister-in-law, Isabel Auld and Gean (Ross) Perry, Keith, Warren and Connie and families, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and all other non related favorite nieces and nephews who called her Grandma Brown. Born at Alameda, Kay lived at Gray and Regina. During the war years Kay worked in the war plant in Ajax, Ontario. Returning to Saskatchewan, Kay married Jack Brown and they were married in Regina, October 23, 1945 and moved to the Lewvan family farm. They were married 53 years and lived all those years at Lewvan. Jack passed away in December 20, 1998. Kay continued to live at Lewvan on the farm and in October 2002, moved to Weyburn due to ill health. Kay's mother, brothers and sisters had all moved to British Columbia. Kay and Jack did take a few holidays to BC to visit family members and of course her family members would come back to Saskatchewan to the Lewvan farm for visits. Kay loved music and enjoyed her music abilities being able to play the harmonica and once hearing a song could play it. Kay's homemade bread and buns, butter tarts, shortbread and special fruit cakes that she made for weddings were popular with all friends and family and the coffee pot was always on whenever anyone stopped for a visit. Community involvement included volunteering in the rink, sports days and fall suppers and teaching Sunday School. She was a member of the Lewvan United Church Women's group and Francis Rebecca's Ladies group. For many years a reporter to the Weyburn Review for the Lewvan area advising of local activities and events. Kay took a special interest in calling friends, local neighbors and shut ins who would be home alone or had no close family members, just to say " hi - how are you doing today" and many of them got a special care package delivered to them or invited over for supper. Kay was very proud of all her grandchildren and new great granddaughter Anika, and enjoyed spending time with them playing games and sharing her music with them. July 1 was her special birthday celebration that she always looked forward to. Special thanks to all the Weyburn Care Home staff and Dr. Fong for all their support and care for our mother during the years that she lived there. Funeral service was held at the Yellow Grass United Church on Wednesday March 11 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Colette Baker officiating. Interment followed at the Yellow Grass Cemetery. James "Jim" Victor Longley
Jim was born October 30, 1918 in the Adell School District to Robert and Roberta Longley (Houston), the second youngest of a family of seven. Jim left school during the thirties working at home and for neighboring farmers. In 1942 he joined the active army then volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals for immediate overseas draft, leaving for Europe on June 1st where he was a linesman and returned home in June 1946. He then started farming his own land in the Key West District, northwest of Ogema, Saskatchewan. Jim married Georgiena Parry in 1948. They had two children: Bryan in 1949 and Linda in 1952. Along with farming he worked for the Ogema Rural Telephone Company for 2 years, drove school bus for a number of years, then worked for the Co-op in Ogema, then for Dunn Bros. also in Ogema.. Jim was a member of the Anglican Church and the Royal Canadian Legion, and was on the Board of Trustees for the Milestone School Unit for 7 years. He was well known for his calling Square Dances and reciting poetry. Jim lived at the Bengough Nursing Home for approximately 12 years then moved to Tatagwa View Nursing Home in Weyburn for approximately 3 years where he passed away March 7, 2009 quickly and peacefully. Jim will be sadly missed by his children Bryan (Yvette) and Linda Longley, grandchildren Corynna (Cory) Perry, Moria (Dan) Pulfer, Shane Longley, Codie Longley (Dustin McFadden); great-grandchildren: Ethan and Joshua Perry and Hayden and Mackenzie Pulfer; as well as in-laws: Clara Longley, Hildur Parry, Berna Krueger, Kay Parry, Joe Myden, as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors and the staff and residents from the nursing home. The funeral service was held on Thursday March 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Ogema United Church with Rev. Isabella Frank, officiating. Interment followed at Ogema Cemetery. The active pallbearers were Cory Perry, Shane Longley, Dan Pulfer, Neil Longley, Dale Klippenstine and John Peterson. Lawrence "Tony" Harold Sperling
On Thursday, March 19th, 2009, Lawrence "Tony" Harold Sperling passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 79 years. Tony was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Bertha Sperling; his loving wife of 55 years, Frances Sperling on March 26th, 2008, two brothers and three sisters. Tony will be lovingly remembered by his four children: Robert (Wendy) Sperling of Surrey, BC and their four children, Ashley, Sarah, Connor and Jordan; Debbie Steer of Saskatoon and her three children: Amanda (Tyler) and their daughter, Mya; Tamara and Matthew Steer; Dr. Brad (Karen) Sperling of Saskatoon and their two daughters, Rachelle and Danielle; and Wendy (Brad) Tindall of Weyburn and their three children, Brandie, Kaylie and Darby; four sisters: Carrie Steel and Hazel Murphy of BC, Ivey McKellar of AB and Eileen Keith of ON; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Lawrence "Tony" Harold Sperling was born September 19, 1929 at Yorkton, one of 10 children born to Roy and Bertha Sperling. He took his schooling to grade eight, then worked on the family farm. He lived in Kisbey for a short time until he met Frances Wood. They were married November 29th, 1952 in Moose Jaw. They moved to Weyburn where Tony worked as a mechanic at a John Deere dealership, Tourigny Distributors from 1952 to 1964. Tony was a volunteer Fireman for 10 years, from 1954 to 1964, and was a permanent full-time Firefighter for 25 years, from 1964 to 1989. He worked for the City of Weyburn for 35 years. He was busy with work until his retirement: at the Fire Hall he was the main mechanic for the Fire Trucks, Police cars and other City vehicles and equipment. He drove the Bombadier and Ambulance, built City floats and constructed two fire trucks, the body and mechanical construction. From his work bench at the Firehall, he did numerous jobs for local service groups, the police and fire department. He was a welder, constructing Christmas street decorations for Weyburn and many other 'structures'. He also dug graves at Hillcrest Cemetery and collected money and repaired the parking meters. He was an honorary member of the Legion, a past member of the I.O.O.F., and became the first Canadian Firefighter to become a member of the "Turtle Club", a U.S. group formed for firefighters whose life was saved by wearing a hard hat. This happened during the Weyburn Hardware Fire in 1959. He received the 'Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal' from the Governor General of Canada in 1986, and was a retired member of the International Association of Firefighters'. Tony enjoyed watching and attending his children's and grandchildren's activities, especially sports. In his later years, he enjoyed trying his luck with lottery tickets/machines. When his wife, Francis was admitted to Souris Valley Extended Care Centre in 2002, then Tatagwa View, Tony visited her daily, and was generous with gifts of goodies like chocolates and candy for her care providers. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all who knew him. A memorial service for Tony will be held at a later date. Carl Selte
Carl Selte was born February 20, 1942. He was predeceased by his father, Martin Selte and brother Arnold Selte and Uncle Kaare Selte. He is survived by son Brens Selte and his children, Levi and Wyatt; daughters, Roxann (Steve) Carrier, her children, Jay, Temple and Chantelle; Dustin and Stephanie; Melody (Del) Docken and her children, John, Austin, Chase and Raelene; the mother of his children, Arlene Selte; his sisters and brothers, Charlie (Margaret) Selte, Don (Carol) Selte, Sonia Selte, Mary Nelson, Janet (Ed) Dethlefsen, Jean (Jerry) Nelson. Mother Amy Hogg, half brother and sister, Rick Johnson and Sharon McMaster, sister-in-law Betty Selte and numerous neices and nephews. He was born in Vermilion, AB, the home farm being in the Paradise Valley district. He went to school at Vanesta then stayed at Uncle Kaares and took a year off schooling. He worked for various farmers in the Vermilion area, worked at the nickle mine at Thompson, MB. In 1957 or 1958 he came to Weyburn and worked with what would be his future father-in-law. He worked for a few farmers in the Lake Alma area. March 28, 1964 he married Arlene Ellingson. He worked for Fred Martin in Radville for a few years. He was a rider at PFRA in Maxim for one season. December 1, 1965 his only son, Brens was born. That winter he moved to Laurence Bloor's farm at Lake Alma and worked rigs. In the spring of 1965 he moved to Geo Hardy Ranch for two years. His first daughter, Roxann, was born June 22, 1967. In the spring of 1968 he went back to Paradise Valley to farm with his brothers. In the fall of 1970 he decided to go back to the Geo Hardy Ranch. On April 6, 1972 Melody was born. That spring he rented Kathryn Lien's farm south of Radville. This farm became his pride and joy. He had 100 head of cattle and a full line of machinery in a few years. He did custom baling to make ends meet. He had one of the first big round balers in the area. He took great pride in the compact square edge on his bale. In the fall of 1987 he moved to Lake Alma. He was caretaker at the skating and curling rink there and did an excellent job at this as well. In about 1993 he moved to Moose Jaw and then to Weyburn to be near family. He took great pride in his children even though he didn't always show it. He always asked if you had heard from them. He loved to bug his grandchildren. His health slowly declined the last years and he passed away peacefully in his sleep March 19, 2009. Donations may be made to the Cancer Society.
Henrietta Elizabeth Zuck
On Sunday, March 22, 2009 Henrietta Elizabeth Zuck of Regina passed away at the age of 82 years. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Ksenia Krawczuk; her husband Victor in 1999; sister Erika ("Ricki") Grimm (Peter) in 1988; and daughter Patricia in 2007. Henrietta is survived by her brother, Paul Krawczuk (Francoise) of Montreal, son Vincent (Donna Jean) of Springfield, IL, son Jonathan of Regina, daughter Andrea (Jim) Clark of Calgary, AB, son Gregory (Emily) of Richmond, and two grandchildren Christopher and Allison Zuck (children of Vincent and Donna Jean). Henrietta was born November 1, 1926 in Kolodzijuvka, Province of Skalat, Poland. After emigrating from Poland with her family at the age of 2, she lived her early years in Krydor. She completed her University education at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. She married Victor Zuck of Hafford in 1949. Both were teachers in Torquay for several years, before moving to Regina. Henrietta resumed her career as a special education teacher and then regular classroom teacher when her children were grown. Henrietta and Victor were married 50 years at the time of his death. A visitation for family and friends was held on Thursday, March 26th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Funeral mass was held on Friday, March 27th at 1:30 p.m. at St. Anne's R.C. Church, 1701 Cowan Crescent, Regina with Rev. Valentine Amobi presiding. Interment in Regina Memorial Gardens. Linda Geraldine Starkes
On Tuesday, March 17, 2009, Linda Geraldine Starkes, of Mankota, passed away peacefully at the Swift Current Cypress Regional Hospital, joining her Jesus at the age of 88 years. Linda was born on December 29, 1920, in Kincaid. Linda was predeceased by her parents Blanche and Andrew Blum, her brothers Verne, Wilbur and Roland, and her husband of 57 years, Duncan "Ted" Starkes. She is survived by her son Leroy (Judy) Starkes of Lumsden., her daughter Noni (Lorne) Dornstauder of Mankota, 6 granddaughters, 8 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter as well as numerous extended family members, neighbors and friends. A funeral service was held on Sunday, March 22 at 2:00 pm in the Mankota Agricultural Hall with Ruby Sayers officiating. Mankota Community Choir sang the hymns "The Lord is My Shepherd", "O Love that Will Not Let Me Go", "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", "My Faith Looks Up to Thee" and "How Great Thou Art" accompanied by Joan Stengler. The Urn Bearer was Andy Blum. Eulogists were granddaughters Carla Bohnet, Ticia Heward, Hali Tuchscherer, Erin Marie Dornstauder, Jodi Lawford and Shanon Graham. Special tribute by god-daughter Myrna Walker. Tribute in Poetry by Evelyn Ryll and Marlene Selensky. Honorary Pallbearers were Ray Roy, Brad Gyug, Bruce Highsaw, Dennis Longpre, Francis Walker and Bill Kohl. Memorial tributes in Linda's memory may be made to the Mankota Health Centre or the Mankota New Horizons. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Piche-Hawkins Funeral Chapels Assiniboia & Gravelbourg.
