BETTY MARZOLF

Betty (Miriam) McNabb-Spencer-Marzolf of Moose Jaw, passed away on Saturday August 20, 2005 at the age of 78 years. Betty was born on July 8, 1927 in Davidson, SK. She is predeceased by her first husband David Ross Spencer, her brothers and sisters: Colin McNabb, Kay Johnston and Jean Jordan. She is survived by her second husband, Howard Marzolf – Providence Place, Moose Jaw; sister, Doris (Dan) Sullivan – Bethune, SK; sister-in-law, Doreen Spencer – Craik, SK; sons: David (Connie) Spencer – Oxbow, SK, Greg (Johanne) Spencer – Moose Jaw; Colin (Judy) Spencer – Campbell River, BC, Les (Dianne) Spencer – Kelowna, BC, Scott (Bonnie) Spencer – Saskatoon, SK; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as Howard’s family: Sadie (George) Wilson – Victoria, BC, Orlee (Herman) Grosfield - Brooks, AB, Ed (Dorothy) Marzolf – Central Butte, Archie (Evelyn) Marzolf – Edmonton, AB, Gorda (Dick) Seymour – Calgary, AB, and Gordon (Irene) Marzolf – Moose Jaw; and (Alvera - deceased) Orval Wolacott – Toronto, ON. Betty attended Teacher’s College in Moose Jaw. After teaching school in the Sarnia district, she married David Ross Spencer of Holdfast, SK. They farmed in the Holdfast district where they raised their five sons. Ross and Betty especially enjoyed watching their sons involvement in sports at the local level. After retiring to Moose Jaw, Betty was widowed. She met and later married Howard Marzolf of the Central Butte district in December 1990. For 15 years they were “socialites” in the Moose Jaw community. They were die-hard Blue Jay fans who celebrated two pennants and like Maple Leaf fans, followed them through their difficult seasons. Betty was a dedicated member of the Legion Auxiliary. She also enjoyed playing bridge and scrabble, bowling, golfing, and special moments with her families. One of Betty’s greatest joys was the time she spent following the education and accomplishments of her fourteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After a courageous fight with vascilitis in the Regina General Hospital, Betty passed away. The Funeral Service will be held at W.J. Jones & Son Chapel on Wednesday August 24, 2005 at 1:30 pm. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday evening 7 – 9 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Holdfast Arena, or the Penzance Cemetery, would be appreciated. In living memory of Betty, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

PHYLLIS LISTER

MRS. PHYLLIS LOUISE LISTER passed away Monday, May 17, 2004 at Providence Place, Moose Jaw, at the age of 85 years. Phyllis was born in 1918 and lived in Moose Jaw all her life. Her father Claude Scott was an engineer for CPR, and her mother Gertrude was a local seamstress. Phyllis loved to travel the world, and her many memories helped to sustain her during these last few years of her life. One of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 50 years, Phyllis dearly loved the Bible and the promises it holds for the future. Phyllis was a generous person who was always considerate of those in need. Always a gracious hostess, she entertained many guests, whether in her home, or at the cabin at Buffalo Pound Lake. She never turned away an animal, and over the years, had skunks, ducks, cats, birds and Basset Hounds in her home. Mixed in the menagerie, were usually a grandchild or two! In 1942 Phyllis married Albert Lister and she devoted herself to raising their five children. Predeceased by her son Kenny, in 1950, as well as her sister Marjorie in 1999, Phyllis is survived by her children: Bob (Sandy) of the Keeler District, Maxine, and Sandra (Keith) Hamon – both of Moose Jaw. She also leaves behind a special son, Scott of Valley View Centre. She will be dearly missed by her grand kids who each have their own special memories: Monty (Tammy) Lister of Biggar, Cheri (Jeff) Anderson of Saskatoon, Amber (Danny) Lebrun of Coderre, Erin (Rick) Thirsk of Saskatoon, Brady Hamon of Calgary and Cody Hamon of Moose Jaw; great-grandchildren: Brooke and Britton Lister, Austin, Hailey and Bryce Thirsk, and Sierra and Sidney Lebrun. She will also be missed by her former husband, Albert, with whom she remained friends. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to, may make a donation to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital Travel Fund, c/o Moose Jaw Shrine Club, 1767 Main St. N., Moose Jaw, S6J 1L6 in her memory. At Phyllis’ request there will be no funeral, just a private graveside burial attended by immediate family. The family wishes to thank Providence Place, and all who took part in her care over the last five years. In living memory of Phyllis, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

RUSSEL CHECKLEY

In loving memory of RUSSEL EDGAR CHECKLEY. Russel passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 in Moose Jaw with his family by his side. Russel was born November 8, 1924 in the Kelstern district. He was a World War II Veteran and a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion. After more than forty years of employment at Saskatchewan Minerals, he retired in Chaplin, Saskatchewan. Russel was predeceased by his father William Checkley, mother Maude Checkley-Lafferty, his step-father Joseph Lafferty, his sister, Aleita Stinson and brothers Irvin Checkley, James Checkley, William Checkley and Kenneth Checkley. Russel is survived by his wife Jean Checkley, sons Bill and Craig, daughters Donna (Allan) Steinhauer, Bonnie (Barry) Leisle, Brenda (Grant) Osaduik, Lynette Wallace and Shauna (David) Sunstrum; grandchildren Shane (Dione), Kari, Shelan, Amy, Michael, Derek, Robert, Neal, Deanne, Anita, Chrisy and Douglas; great-grandchildren Justine, Joel and Samantha; brothers Stanley (Shirley) and Ross (Betty); sisters Vi Mason, Lilas (Mel) Bitz as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 3, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chaplin Community Complex. Sandra Sellars will officiate. Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites will be conducted by Roscoe Steele. Interment will take place in the Chaplin Cemetery at a later date. Memorials to the Palliative Care Unit, c/o Moose Jaw Union Hospital, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 1H3 or to a charity of one’s choice would be greatly appreciated by the family. In living memory of Russel, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by Prairie Memorial Funeral Home.

PHYLLIS RESVICK

Phyllis Resvick, long time resident of Aneroid Sask., peacefully passed away with her family by her side and made her journey to be with Art on May 21, 2003. Phyllis was born on the family farm on July 1, 1920. She married her husband of 61 years Art Resvick on November 29, 1941. Phyllis greatest love was her family and especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed her friends and neighbors visiting in her home. Phyllis enjoyed quilting, knitting, sewing, baking cookies, gardening, the farm and playing cards with her sisters. She is predeceased by her loving husband Art, her daughter Sandra Switzer, her parents Robert and Nellie Wells, sisters; Eva, Grace and Pat, and brothers Wilfred and Frank. She is survived by her son Garry (Brenda), daughter Sharon (Lawrence) Herperger, son-in- law Bob (Gail) Switzer; grandchildren Shane (Tara) Resvick, Heidi (Armand) Lasante; Tim and Kurtis Herperger; Beau, Kyle, Jane and Bailee Switzer; great-grandchildren Ashley Corcoran, Alex and Hunter Resvick, sisters Hazel Watson and Alma L’heureux; brothers-in-law Adrian Paton, Bill (Anne) Resvick, Gordon (Bertha) Resvick and George Resvick; sisters-in-law Kay Resvick and Gen Resvick and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Phyllis’ life will be held at the Aneroid United Church on Sunday May 25, 2003 at 2 pm. Linda Stumpf will officiate. Interment will take place at Aneroid Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Aneroid Centennial Hall would be appreciated.

ROSE GUY

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of wife and mother, Rose Marie Guy (Sikorski). Rose was born December 7, 1946 in Lestock, Saskatchewan. She married the love of her life, Gary Guy on September 30, 1966. To this union two wonderful children were born, Darlene and Duane. They resided in Swift Current Saskatchewan, Thompson Manitoba, finally settling in Moose Jaw, making it their home since 1972. Rose is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Maizie Sikorski, and father-in-law, Roy Guy. She is survived by her husband and best friend for over 37 years, Gary; daughter, Darlene and son, Duane; sister, Josephine (Keith) Fjaagesund of Neepewa, MB; brother, James (Joanne) Sthamann of Swift Current; sisters, Peggy (Barry) Crowther of Chaplin, and Shelly (Jim) Alexanderson of Moose Jaw; mother-in-law, Gladys Guy of Moose Jaw; brother-in-law, Garth (Delores) of Regina; and sister-in-law, Lynn (Pat) Reilly of Regina. Rose is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and two very special children in her life, Joey and Alicia Reader of Moose Jaw. Rose gave her time to many things, including minor league baseball where she made sure every player played ball. She was also very active in the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. She gave many hours helping with fundraising campaigns for the club. Rose loved gardening, crafts, baking, her family and friends, and Christmas. She will remain in our hearts and souls in this time of wait for our eternal embrace. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 0E2, would be appreciated. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 561 Home Street West, Moose Jaw on Tuesday January 13, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Linda Owens will officiate. Memorialization will take place at a later date. In living memory of Rose, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

FRANK BRATTAN

FRANK BRATTAN died peacefully on Monday, September 27, 2004 in the company of his daughter, Lynne, his son, Bob, and his special friend, Beth. He was born August 12, 1915 in Moose Jaw to John and Lily Brattan. He was raised in Dunkirk, Saskatchewan on the family farm. Frank was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in England during WWII. He was employed with Sask. Minerals in Chaplin, Bishopric, and Fox Valley where he made his homes for several years, retiring in 1981 to move to Moose Jaw where he has since resided. During Frank’s retirement he greatly enjoyed spending time golfing, curling and especially volunteering at the Western Development Museum with the vintage aircraft restorers. Frank held many positions with the Masonic Lodge during his lifetime. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers: Jack, Joe and Harry, as well as his infant daughter, Brenda and wife, Doris. His family who remember him with love and gratitude are daughter, Lynne (Rod) Rosenfelt, son, Robert (Linda) Brattan; grandchildren: Lisa & Teri Rosenfelt, Ryan & Matthew Brattan, numerous nieces, nephews and their families, and his companion, Beth Curran and her children. Following cremation, A Private Family Graveside Service at Rosedale Cemetery will be held. Della Ferguson along with members of the Masons will officiate. Family and friends are invited to the W. J. Jones & Son Family Centre, 262 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw for a time of fellowship and reflection of Frank’s life on Thursday, September 30, 2004 from 2:30 – 4:30p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Western Development Museum Vintage Aircraft Restorers or Doric St. George Masonic Lodge. In living memory of Frank, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

ERNEST KENT

Ernest Kent, age 90, of Riverhurst, Sask. passed away on September 1, 2003. Ernest was born on the farm at Riverhurst, he spent his entire life farming and held an interest in farming and gardening right up to his passing. Ernest is predeceased by his parents, William and Mary; two sisters, Grace and Bessie; and four brothers, Ted, Jack, Bert, and Ben. He is survived by several cousins. In keeping with Ernest’s wishes, a Graveside Service will be held at the Riverhurst Cemetery on Friday September 5, 2003 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Helen Reid will officiate. Those wishing to attend can meet at the Cemetery prior to the service. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday morning from 10-11 am at Prairie Memorial Funeral Home in Chaplin. In living memory of Ernest, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by Prairie Memorial Funeral Home, Chaplin/Herbert, Sask.
