On January 20, 2004, Rusty Hales passed away peacefully after a long and difficult battle with Alzheimer’s’ Disease. Over the years, Rusty touched the lives of many individuals. Now that he is finally at peace, our family takes comfort in knowing that those who had been a part of his life may, over the coming days, take a moment to recall some of the special times they had shared with him. Rusty was born in Moose Jaw, SK on March 6, 1934. He worked at the Moose Jaw Times Herald from 1951-57, then at the Moose Jaw Printing Co. Ltd. until 1984. In later years, he kept busy by delivering for Leonard Fysh Drug Store. On September 27, 1958, Rusty married Ruby Forde, and together they raised a son and daughter. He has resided in, and been compassionately cared for, by the staff of Providence Place since February 5, 1996. Rusty is predeceased by his parents - Olga and Laurence, and his brothers - Roy, Vern (Mary), and Lorne (in infancy). Holding the memories of him are: his wife, Ruby; his son, David (Michele) and granddaughter, Sarah; his daughter Shannon Jakes (Rob); his sister-in-law, Florine Hales; nephew Colin; nieces, Faye Austin (David) and Carol Mohrbutter (Larry); nephew, Wayne Hales; brother-in-law, Lindsay Forde; nephews, Carl, Lindsay, and Cameron, and his very special life-long friend, Bud Griffin (Sheila). Over the years, Rusty took great pride in the achievements he realized through his involvement in, and countless hours of time devoted to, the community of Moose Jaw. He was very active in the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Club, serving in various positions including Secretary, Bulletin Editor, Band Festival Chairman, and President. Through his love of music, Rusty encouraged and supported his children's activities in the Moose Jaw Lions Band, acting as Publicity Director and President, and serving on the organizing committees for tours to Britain, Ottawa, and California. Strong bonds of friendship were forged throughout these years with many of the people involved in, and associated with, these organizations. Rusty was an avid sports fan, and he held a passion for the game of hockey. He thoroughly enjoyed all the years he spent volunteering as an announcer and penalty timekeeper at the Moose Jaw Civic Centre for local minor and senior men’s hockey leagues, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League. He would often recall fond memories involving many young players who later rose to the ranks in the NHL. Rusty will be remembered for his zeal for life – he loved to laugh, and make others laugh around him. He took the greatest pleasures in the simplest of things that life offered him, contributed greatly through his volunteer efforts, and will always be remembered as a devoted and loving husband and father. From him, we have learned the importance of reaching for our dreams, living each day to the very fullest, and facing the challenges placed before us with determination and resilience. Rusty always considered himself fortunate to have spent his childhood years growing up in the beautiful River Park area of Moose Jaw (later to become known as the Wakamow Valley). Throughout his life, he continued to be drawn back to this special place, and we know in our hearts Rusty shall find his peace, surrounded by the trees and hills he so loved, and the memories he held so dear. A private reception and memorial will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2004. In lieu of flowers, our family would greatly appreciate donations made in Rusty’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan or the Providence Place Foundation, Moose Jaw. A tree will be planted in Rusty’s memory in the Wakamow Valley later this year, by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
