Arthur Nieman
January 1, 1927 - July 22, 2011
Mr. Arthur Michael Nieman, 84 years of Lake Lenore, passed away on July 22, 2011 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, with his family at his side. Art was born on January 1, 1927 at Lake Lenore to Frank and Magdalen (nee Musty) Nieman. He grew up there, attending Lake Lenore School and then St. Peter’s College for his grade 12. Art ventured out to Hamilton, ON for a short time but it wasn’t long before the call of the land brought him home. He began a lifelong career as a grain farmer, truly loving his chosen career. On November 6, 1950, Art married Olga Kowalyshyn. They lived in Lake Lenore, where they raised their family of five children. Art was always a sports fan, playing a variety of sports when he was young, coaching his children when they were playing and in later years, watching sports on TV. He enjoyed golfing, playing on the local courses as well as many others while on vacation. Their family enjoyed an annual trip to Waskesiu and he and Olga visited various warm destinations in the United States. Art was also a member of the Lake Lenore Lions Club for a number of years. He was proud of his family and loved spending time with them and always looked forward to time spent with his grandchildren. Art and Olga were very proud to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary, this past November, and to have their entire family present for the celebrations. Art will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Olga Nieman of Lake Lenore; their five children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild: Judi (Peter) Hubert of Swift Current; Gwen (Bob) Flottorp and family Angela (Jason) Kelly and daughter Eva and Bobby Flottorp, all of Regina; Paulette Nieman of Ottawa, ON; David (Reneé) Nieman and family Luke Nieman and Anna Nieman, all of Lake Lenore; and Cheryl (John) Miller of Saskatoon and family Dayna Miller of Toronto and Danielle Miller of Saskatoon; two brothers and one sister: Donald Nieman of Victoria, BC, Douglas (Arlene) Nieman of Humboldt and Doreen Douglas of Texas; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Art was predeceased by his parents Frank and Magdalen Nieman. The Prayer Service for Art was held on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at St Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lake Lenore. The Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lake Lenore, celebrated by Fr. Richard Meidl, OSB. Interment followed in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery with Urn bearer, David Nieman. Memorial Donations in Art’s memory may be made to Humboldt District Hospital Foundation General Equipment Fund or St. Anthony’s Cemetery Fund. Henry Bohmann
July 19, 1936 - July 12, 2011
Mr. Henry Michael Bohmann, 74 years of Humboldt, SK passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Humboldt District Hospital. Henry was born on July 19, 1936 in the Annaheim district to William and Bertha (nee Kunz) Bohmann. He grew up on a farm in the Annaheim area and attended Bunker Hill School. Henry began his working career with Alvin Stumborg, cutting brush. He went on to work for the Department of Highways for a number of years. He enjoyed working on road construction so moved on to Kirsch Construction where he eventually became foreman. He finished his working years with Anderson Rental and Paving. Throughout his working years, Humboldt was his home, although he was often away for much of the construction season. On November 6, 1965, Henry married Katherine “Katy” Yager. They were blessed with two children, Todd and Kim. Henry was a people person, he enjoyed visiting with people and through his work, knew people all over the province. He was a huge sports fan, always cheering on his favourite teams – the Humboldt Broncos, Toronto Blue Jays and of course, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Henry kept abreast of what was happening in the world by reading, watching the news and listening to News Talk Radio, especially John Gormley. He also enjoyed a good game of cards with family or friends and in later years when he had more time, he became quite adept at gardening. Although his family didn’t all live close by, he kept in close contact with them, often talking to them daily. Henry was proud to be called “Grandpa” and enjoyed visits with his two grandsons. Due to failing health, Henry became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa in July 2010, where he has lived until the present. Henry will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his two children and two grandchildren: Todd (Donetta) Bohmann of Saskatoon and Kim (Keith) Lueke and sons, Nicholas and Dustin of Edmonton; two sisters and two brothers: Bernadette Szautner of Humboldt, Tony (Betty) Bohmann and Linda (Art) Bley, all of Saskatoon, and Ben (Peggy) Bohmann of Choiceland; sister-in-law, Theresa Bohmann of Prince Albert; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Bertha Bohmann; wife Katy Bohmann; three brothers, Lawrence, Albert and Harold; and a sister in infancy, Anne. The Prayer Service for Henry was held on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Hwy 5 East, Humboldt, presided by Jenny Irwin. Others taking part in the service were: organist, Darlene Cash; readers, Jocelyn Bley and Brenda Britz; and eulogist, Keith Lueke. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, celebrated by Fr. Emile April. Others taking part in the mass were: crossbearer, Daryl Bley; readers, Janet Szautner and Brian Bohmann; intentions, Lynette Bohmann; altar servers, Jaelyn and Logan Hahn; gift bearers, Todd Bohmann and Kim Lueke; and communion ministry, Sheldon Kohlen and Scott Hahn. Pallbearers were Bill Szautner, Gord Szautner, Darren Bohmann, Sid Bohmann, Kevin Gursky and Mike Yager. Interment followed in St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery. Memorial donations in Henry’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation or Humboldt District Hospital Foundation. Shirley Strain
May 7, 1934 - July 12, 2011
The death of Mrs. Shirley Joyce Strain (Dunn), 77 years, of Humboldt, SK occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on July 12, 2011 surrounded by her family. Shirley was born to William and Isabel Dunn in Ellisboro, Saskatchewan on May 7, 1934. She received her elementary and high school education in Ellisboro & Wolseley Schools. Shirley attended Normal School to attain her teaching certificate and then taught in the rural schools in that area. On August 21, 1954 Shirley married Robert Strain at Wolseley, SK. Together they moved to many locations throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Soon they became a growing family with four children. Their final move brought them to Humboldt in 1977 where Bob managed the Revelstoke Lumber Yard. Shirley loved to be with people, she worked at various jobs and volunteered in many places. She volunteered at the Good Neighbor Store, the Hospital Auxiliary, and the Legion Auxiliary. She was very giving of her time and of herself. Shirley was a very social person and liked to be busy going places, doing things and helping others. Her sense of humour was something to be envied, always enjoying a good laugh with others. She belonged to the bridge club and thoroughly enjoyed playing cards. Games were another of her pastimes and scrabble was a game she enjoyed playing with her grandchildren. Horseracing was another pastime that Shirley enjoyed. Shirley kept herself busy golfing during the summer and curling during the winter. She was a good friend and participated in many activities with her friends. Robert and Shirley had the opportunity to travel, with Ireland and Alaska being two of their favorite destinations. Shirley had many good friends but family was the most important part of Shirley’s life – she loved being a grandmother and being with her family whenever the opportunity was there to watch their activities and to give them support. Shirley will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild: Wendy (Barry) Whitehouse and family, Jeff, Susan, Chad and Travis and his son Liam, all of Saskatoon; Lori (Kirk) Johb of LeRoy and sons, Adam of Biggar and Myles of LeRoy; and Brad (Debbie) Strain and son, Robbie all of Saskatoon; her brother Glen Dunn of Regina; her brothers-and-sisters-in-law: Raymond (Eve) Strain of Calgary; Ellen Hanson of Lumsden; Francis Perry of Regina and Jim (Gail) Strain of Calgary; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Robert (2009) & her son Rob (1974), her parents William & Isabel Dunn, brother Ken (Arlette) Dunn, sister-in-law Rose Dunn, brothers-in-law Oscar Hanson & Mel Perry and parents-in-law Robert & Ola Strain. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Humboldt officiated by Rev. Canon Wayne Sturgess. Others taking part in the service were: organist, Kathy Wolfe; readers, Susan Parenteau and Kirk Johb; eulogists, Shirley’s grandsons – Jeff, Adam, Myles and Robbie; and memorial table attendants, Jen and Murray Weninger. An honor guard was formed by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Shirley’s life”. Interment will follow at a later date at the Central Butte Cemetery. Agnes Doepker
March 8, 1919 - July 5, 2011
The family is saddened to announce that Mrs. Agnes Doepker, 92 years of Humboldt, passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Agnes Bernadette was born on March 8, 1919 in Watson to Henry and Mary (Langenberger) Ebbing. She obtained her education at Watson School. Agnes ventured out to New Westminster and obtained employment there for a year. She returned to Saskatchewan and married the love of her life Gerhard Doepker on October 12, 1943. Together they moved to Winnipeg for a short time until Gerhard joined the Army and then they were stationed in Chilliwack. In 1945, they moved back to Saskatchewan and began farming in the Pilger area for approximately 23 years. They were blessed with nine children, seven boys and two girls, but unfortunately in 1959 their infant daughter Mary Ann passed away. In 1969, they moved to Humboldt and Gerhard became ill and passed away on January 19, 1971. Agnes was a very strong woman both physically and emotionally to be able to raise eight children in an era when conveniences were very scarce. From March of 1976 to June of 1979 Agnes worked at Farmer John’s in Humboldt and then worked at the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in the dietary department until 1984 when she retired. Her thirst for knowledge was very strong and she loved to read and in doing so kept abreast on current affairs and sports. She was very active with her family by supporting and participating in activities they were doing. Agnes could be found tobogganing at Muenster Hill with her children and grandchildren at the age of 70 plus. Family was number one and she cemented a wonderful family filled with morals, values and work ethics which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She loved playing cards especially cribbage and in her quiet times she would knit. Agnes traveled to many destinations in Canada and the USA. Agnes was fortunate to be able to live independently until this spring when due to failing health she moved to St. Mary’s Villa. Agnes will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her eight children and their families: Allan (Linda) of Saskatoon and family, Keith and Kevin (Jamie) and children Halli and Madison; Gordon (Sharon) of Pilger and family, Wanda Krentz and children Kyle, Taylor and Samantha, Bonnie (Lyle) Olexsyn and children Sara and Connor, Garry (Natalie) and son Gabriel and Colin (Deanna Schick); Mark Doepker of Humboldt and family, Erica (Brian Snell), Ryley and Amy; Janice (Bryan) Tremblay of Humboldt and family, Nancy (Trevor) Baert and son Kade, Adam (Stacey) and daughter Andie and Evan; Leon (Donna) of Humboldt and family, Lindsey (Rory) Merkosky and daughter Rowan, Bailey (Justin Krisko), Mitchell and Kelsey; Neil (Valerie) of Saskatoon and family, Kristen (Warren) Kudeba and children Darcy and Drew and Kim (Ed) Rogers; Luke (Yvonne) Doepker of Saskatoon and family Kyle (Marisa Hrycyk), Justin and Brody; and David (JoAnn) of Humboldt and family Jill, Sarah and Matthew. Agnes was predeceased by her parents Henry and Mary Ebbing; husband Gerhard (Jan. 19, 1971); daughter Mary Ann (1959); three step brothers: Carl, Joe and Rudy Guber; sister and brother: Kay and Clem Ebbing. A Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. presided by Nestor Trach with organist Kathy Detillieux. Scripture readings were done by Sarah Doepker and Garry Doepker and Mitchell Doepker read a special poem. The Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. concelebrated by Fr. Emile April and Fr. Bernard Stauber, OSB. Others taking part in the mass were: cross bearer, Janice Tremblay; scripture readers, Bailey Doepker and Nancy Baert; intentions, Bonnie Olexsyn and music ministry, St. Augustine R.C. Choir. Gift bearers and a rose tribute were done by Agnes’s 24 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Agnes’s seven sons, Allan, Gordon, Mark, Leon, Neil, Luke and David. Both services were held from St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery beside her husband Gerhard. Memorial donations in Agnes’s memory may be directed to Humboldt District Hospital Foundation (David Ronald Bell Cardiac Endowment Fund) or St. Augustine Parish Center. Marian Bernice Gerwing
August 12, 1933 - June 20, 2011
It is with great sadness that the family of Bernice Gerwing, of Lake Lenore passed away at the age of 77, on June 20, 2011. Bernice was born to George and Mary (nee Kurtenbach) Hackl at St. Benedict, the 8th child of 11. Bernice took her education at St. Benedict School. Following that she did domestic jobs in the community. Little did she know that this part of her life would prepare her for her career as a wife and mother of eight children. It was at a dance in Middle Lake that she met the love of her life Daniel Gerwing. After a two year courtship they were married at the Old St. Benedict R.C. Church on October 15, 1952. Together they began their life on a farm in the Lake Lenore area. They were blessed with eight children. Dan decided to have a career change and in 1961 they moved into the town of Lake Lenore. Bernice continued to produce a large vegetable garden for survival and enjoyment. She loved flowers and all the beautiful birds they attracted. Bernice was an excellent cook and would create many delicious dishes with love for her family. Her overnight buns recipe has been passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her pie recipe also provided a perfect way to end a perfect meal. She did share that recipe with Dan who had taken over the job of “pie maker”. She was very active in the St. Anthony’s CWL for many years and served as president for one term. All domestic duties put aside, Bernice’s love was people. She truly was a people person. Her home was always open and she always made time to care and share with anyone who needed to talk or just have a cup of coffee. It was through Dan and Bernice’s involvement in an organization of special friends that they were able to minister help and support to many young couples and individuals around the area. She loved everyone unconditionally and accepted everyone for who they were and where they were in their lives. Bernice was always very encouraging and supportive, especially to her children. She was very proud of her family’s accomplishments. The best word to describe Bernice would be “encourager”. Bernice had many special qualities we all enjoyed. Her soft, gentle, joyful personality will be missed by many. A Prayer Service was held on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. participants in the service were: scripture readers Erin tosh and Colleen Gerwing with Barry Gerwing sharing words of remembrance. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. concelebrated by Fr. Richard Meidl O.S.B. and Fr. Andrew Britz. Participants in the mass were: cross bearer Elliot Hopfner, altar servers Grace Flaman, Jesse Flaman, Janaya Gerwing and Renee Gerwing, scripture readers Jeremy Holcomb and Christopher Holcomb, prayers of faithful Megan Vedress, gift bearers Andrea Linwall, Doshua Linwall and Mark Thoms, a duet was performed by Jessie Hopfner – Richardson and Jeremy Holcomb and memorial table attendants were: Annette Yeager, Shelly Kunz, Jane Ramler and Elizabeth Lemmerich. Honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Beatrice’s life”. Pallbearers were: Bernice’s grandchildren: Benjamin Haeusler, Melissa Edwards, Evrett Hopfner, John Vedress, Samantha Hopfner and Mickolle Thoms. Both services were held from St. Anthony’s R.C. Church Lake Lenore. Interment followed at St. Anthony’s R.C. Cemetery Lake Lenore. Memorial donations in Bernice’s memory may be directed to Calgary Full Gospel or LIFE Outreach International – 3rd World Humanitarian Aid.
