Leslie Earl Wolfe
November 13, 1945 - October 16, 2009
It is with great sadness the family announces Leslies passing on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the Humboldt District Hospital surrounded by his family.
Leslie (Les) Wolfe was born on November 13, 1945 in the Drake area to Harry and Mary (nee Schmidt) Wolfe. He attended the Bloomfield Country School and Drake School. Life on the farm was Leslie’s love so he remained on the family farm and at the age of sixteen he began his career as a bee keeper for 47 years.
On November 14, 1970 Les married the love of his life Lynda Dick at the North Star Mennonite Church in Drake, SK. Together they ran the family farm continuing with bees and grain farming. They were blessed with one daughter, Shannon and two sons, Shawn and Shane. Les loved sports especially when he could support his sons with their games or when attending the local Drake Canucks hockey games.
Les had a dream to own a catering business so for 14 months he owned a restaurant in Lanigan which he thoroughly enjoyed. Les especially enjoyed the time with his customers. He also enjoyed woodworking and gardening, playing cards with his family and friends and travelling.
Les was overjoyed when grandchildren started to fill his life. He enjoyed being a grandfather and spent many hours with his grandchildren supporting them in their activities.
Leslie fought a short courageous battle with cancer. Les was not a man who desired extra attention – he fought his battle with cancer with dignity and quiet integrity. Les enjoyed people and will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Lynda Wolfe of Drake; three children and their families: Shannon Lalach (Ray) of Lanigan and children, Dryden and Kyle Lalach of Wynyard, Shawn (Melissa) Wolfe and children, Renee and Dalton, and Shane (Trisha) Wolfe and children Kyla and Kaelan all of Drake, and Ashley Healey of Regina; his mother, Mary Wolfe of Rosthern; two sisters and one brother: Linda (Lowell) Bartel of Rosthern, Willard (Kathy) Wolfe of Saskatoon and Elsie (Alvin) Krause of Rosthern; four aunts: Mary Schmidt, Eleanor Schmidt both of Drake, Rose Schmidt of Saskatoon and Esther Schmidt of BC; mother and father-in-law, Eva and Abe Dick of Rosthern; one sister-in-law, Wilma (Wes) Zackarias of Meadow Lake and one brother-in-law, Ron (Denise) Dick of Moose Jaw; and by numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Leslie was predeceased by his father, Harry Wolfe; grandson, James Lalach and members of the Schmidt family.
A Funeral Service will be held at the North Star Mennonite Church in Drake on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. officiated by, Pastor Emily Toews. Others taking part in the service are organist, Marge Kline, pianist, Mary Schmidt, quartet, Emily Toews, Ed Ewert, Jim Ewert and Stu Jantz, words of remembrance given by, Melissa Wolfe and Ron Dick, memorial book attendants, Amber Friesen and Jenny Plett, memorial table attendants, Dan and Esther Laskowski, ushers, Emery Laskowski, Quinton Bartel and Maurice Wildeman, sound, Peter Nicholson Honorary pallbearers include Les’s grandchildren, Dryden, Kyle, Renee, Dalton, Kyla and Kaelan and all those who shared in Les’s life. Active pallbearers are: Chris Schmidt, Kirby Schmidt, Kelly Schmidt, Michael Krause, Cameron Wolfe and Ray Healey. Interment will follow at the North Star Cemetery. Delmer Galambos
November 28, 1939 - October 3, 2009
The death of Mr. Delmer Galambos, 69 years, of St. Benedict occurred at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon on Saturday, October 3, 2009. Delmer was born on November 28, 1939 in Wakaw to John and Mary (nee Kurja) Galambos. He grew up in the St. Benedict area and attended Minnaki School in Belmont. After his schooling he worked for Sask Power. It was at this time he met the love of his life Lillian Mertz, and they were married on October 10, 1964 at St. Benedict. They then moved to Saskatoon for two years and returned to St. Benedict where they have resided until the present. They were blessed with three children, a son and two daughters. Delmer was self employed, he was a truck driver and made many miles across Canada which led to many long term friendships. Later Darryl joined him and they trucked together which was a very special bond for both of them. Delmer was so proud that Darryl had continued with this profession. Delmer also farmed and spent many hours at auctions and checking every newspaper to find the right object for the right price, a natural, “wheeler and dealer”. If you knew Delmer you loved him, his fun loving, warm and humorous personality drew people to him. Everyone will remember him for his funny facial expressions when sharing a story. He had a great love for his family either by teasing them, supporting their activities, especially watching Tanner doing his Ukrainian dancing, and of course sharing a dish of ice cream with anyone. Due to his illness over the past years Delmer was forced to retire earlier than he would have liked, but he could still enjoy traveling around the area checking crops and other less strenuous hobbies. Together Delmer and Lillian made his final trip to Ft. Mac this past spring to spend time with Darryl and his family. Delmer will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, seven days short of their 45th wedding anniversary, LILLIAN Galambos of St. Benedict; three children and seven grandchildren: Darryl (Leann) Galambos and daughter, Payge of Ft. McMurray, AB and Dakota and McKenzie of Beechy; Denise (Jeff) Thorlakson and children, Brendan and Kaileigh all of St. Brieux; and Darla (Ted) Pipchuk and son, Tanner of Yellow Creek and Jessie Sjogren of Wakaw; two brothers and two sisters: Elaine (Hans) Grande, Donald (Mavis) Galambos, Marian (Walter) Blair and Calvin (Jackie) Galambos all of Saskatoon; mother-in-law, Rose Mertz of Humboldt; three brothers and sister-in-law: Roman Mertz of Middle Lake, Ervin Mertz (Jackie) of LeRoy and Linda (Norman) Lux of Humboldt; numerous nieces and nephews. Delmer was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Galambos; father-in-law, Joe Mertz; nephew, Colin Mertz; sister and brother-in-law, Cindy Mertz and Virgil Lopinski. The Funeral Mass, celebrated by Fr. Dennis Phaneuf, was held on October 8, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church. Others taking part in the service were: Norman Lux, Cross Bearer; Mona Jasken, Organist; Leah Prefontane, Guitarist; Rosemarie Messaros & Joan Martin, Readers; Delmer’s grandchildren, Brendan, Tanner, Kaileigh & Payge, Gift Bearers; & Donald & Calvin Galambos, Urn Bearers. Sr. Pauline Thacyk, OSE
December 27, 1917 - October 4, 2009
The death of Sr. Pauline Thacyk OSE, 91 years, of Humboldt occurred at St. Elizabeth’s Convent on Sunday, October 4, 2009. Sister Pauline Thacyk was born in Lanigan, Saskatchewan on December 27, 1917. She was the daughter of John Tkaczyk and Sophie Kutzer. She had three brothers and two sisters. She entered the community of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth, Humboldt, SK in 1938. Sister Pauline pronounced her temporary vows on November 26, 1940 and her perpetual vows on May 16, 1944. Sister Pauline celebrated her 65th Anniversary of Profession in 2005. Sister Pauline completed her high school at the Sisters of the Child Jesus Academy in North Battleford. She took a four year course in Medical Laboratory Technology and graduated as a Medical Technologist in 1960. She took a course in Cardiology and obtained her registration as a cardiology technician in 1972. In the community Sister Pauline served in the Admitting Office of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Humboldt, St. Michael’s Hospital, Cudworth and St. Joseph’s Hospital, Macklin for a total of nine years. She served as the head of the Laboratory Department of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for thirty years. In 1990, Sister Pauline returned to St. Elizabeth’s Convent, Humboldt and served as the local treasurer for seven years. During Sister Pauline’s retirement she could devote more time to her art and painted various pictures for the convent and others. She served on the Museum Board in Humboldt for several years. Sister Pauline will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her Religious Community, The Sisters of St. Elizabeth and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, John & Sophie Tkaczyk, her brothers, Michael, Joseph (Doreen), Peter (Eleanor) and sisters Marie (Herman) Vossen and Anne Thacyk. The Wake Service was held on Tuesday, October 6, at 7:30 p.m., presided by Fr. Bernard Stauber OSB. The Funeral Mass was offered on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Abbot Peter Novekosky OSB. Both services were held at St. Elizabeth’s Convent, Humboldt. Those taking part in the funeral service were: organist, Sr. Imelda Gartner OSE; cross bearer, Sr. Louise Krupka OSE, readers, Sr. Theresa Novekosky OSE and Sr. Viola Benz OSE and prayers of the faithful, Sr. Philomena Dobmeier OSE. Pallbearers were John Thacyk, Bill Thacyk, Bob Thacyk, Wayne Thacyk, Herman Vossen, & William Tkaczyk. Honorary Pallbearers were “all those who shared in Sr. Pauline’s life.” Interment followed at the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Humboldt. Memorial donations in Sr. Pauline’s memory may be directed to the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Health Care Fund. Kenneth James Koski
July 8, 1939 – September 21, 2009
It is with great sadness the family announces Ken’s passing on Monday, September 21, 2009, at the Humboldt District Hospital, after a brief struggle with cancer. Ken was born in Humboldt, SK on July 8, 1939 to James and Theresa (nee Cox) Koski. Ken attended St. Augustine School in Humboldt and St. Peter’s College in Muenster and completed his grade XII at Humboldt Collegiate Institute. He then attended Teachers’ College in Saskatoon and started his teaching career at St. Francis School in the Muenster area. On August 18, 1962 Ken married Sylvia Angeli at St. Gertrude Catholic Church. Together they moved to Rosetown where Ken taught at St. Joseph’s Convent. In 1964, Ken and Sylvia returned to Humboldt where Ken took a teaching position at St. Augustine School. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Donna and Shannon. Ken retired from his 32 - year teaching career following 11 years as principal at Meacham School and one year at the Viscount School. Ken and Sylvia thoroughly enjoyed their retirement years together traveling with family and friends. Throughout his lifetime Ken was an avid hunter, hockey player and golfer where great friendships were formed. Ken was a community minded person and was very involved in many organizations such as the Humboldt Sports Hall of Fame, Humboldt Golf Club board and other sports. Ken was a true teacher, a career he enjoyed immensely. His love for children showed through in many ways in the classroom or on the street, he could always make them smile by nicknaming them or telling them a funny story. With a natural love for children it was apparent he would love being a grandfather so when his precious grandchildren began to fill his life he was very proud of them. He spent quality time with them every chance he could by supporting them in all their activities. Each grandchild held a special spot in his heart. Everyone can share a story about Ken that would bring you a belly laugh or a subtle smile from a memory that he has left us, his greatest gift his wonderful sense of humor, which remained with him to the end of his earthly journey. Even during his time of pain Ken always put others first and felt he could wait for treatments it was more important that other people be served first. Ken will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 47 years, SYLVIA Koski; two daughters and four grandchildren: Donna (Gordon) Laverdiere and family, Brynn and Cole of Regina; and Shannon Koski (Joe Podiluk) and family, Erin and Shaye Sawatzky, all of Saskatoon; mother, Theresa Koski of Surrey, BC; seven brothers and sisters: Carol (Clarence) Uhll of Kimberley, BC; Gary (Ziran) Koski of China; Pat (Carol) Koski of Cranbrook, BC; Jim (Tania) Koski of Medicine Hat, AB; Maureen (Emery) Cyfra of Calgary, AB; Brian (Rona) Koski of Calgary, AB and Janine (Robert) Harriman of Surrey, BC; four brothers and sisters-in-law: Marion (Roman) Wassermann of Humboldt; Ken (Teckla) Angeli of Kamloops, BC; Larry (Linda) Angeli of Calgary, AB and Karen (Al) Demmitt of Nanaimo, BC; numerous nieces and nephews and by many good friends. Ken was predeceased by his father, James Koski; parents-in-law, Joseph and Agnes Angeli; sister-in-law, Brenda Angeli and son-in-law, Mark Sawatzky. A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. presided by Jenny Irwin. Others taking part in the service were: organist and soloist, Carol Uhll; readers, Maureen Cyfra and Janine Harriman; and words of remembrance were given by Ken’s daughter’s, Donna Laverdiere and Shannon Koski. A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Emile April. Others taking part in the service were: cross bearer, Kirby Wassermann; altar servers, Devin and Michelle Hinz; readers, George Theisen and Roman Wassermann; intentions, Ken’s nieces and nephews; music ministry, Dolores Hinz and St. Augustine R.C. Choir; and gift bearers, Ken and Sylvia’s grandchildren, Brynn and Cole Laverdiere, Erin and Shaye Sawatzky. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Ken’s life experiences”. Flora Gjerde
October 12, 1919 - August 1, 2011
Mrs. Flora Gjerde, 91 years, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Watson Health Center. Flora was born on October 12, 1919 the 11th child out of 15 to John and Albena (nee Danis) Rondeau in the Wadena District. She attended Bradgate School. Following her education she remained in the area helping her mother and other neighbours with domestic duties. On December 7, 1939 she married Olger Gjerde at Dahlton. Together they began their farming career in the Nora area. Flora was very active in the day to day operations of the family farm. Together they raised five children. She enjoyed gardening and the domestic duties of running a home but the art of being a chef was her favourite, she was known for her excellent cooking skills. She enjoyed participating in curling and ball. She was a member of the “Nora Sunshine Circle” a group of ladies that would meet regularly. Her caring, compassionate and nurturing personality showed through as she helped others through difficult times, including family and fostering children. After the premature death of Olger in 1968 Flora moved to Saskatoon where she worked for the Family Service Bureau in the Home Care division. Later she expanded on her cooking talents by working in the catering business at hotels and the Saskatoon Airport. Following this she became a cook with the oil rigs in Alberta and the Territories, where she gained respect and furthered her natural ability to help others. Again she was very well known for her gift as a very good cook! At the age of 64 she retired and continued to be very active socially, enjoying dancing and bowling where she won many trophies in Western Canada for high scores. In 2006 Flora moved to Naicam to be closer to her family and she adapted quickly and loved her independent life in Naicam. Due to failing health she moved to Evergreen Country Home in LeRoy on March 1, 2011. The family is very grateful for their sister Yvonne for all her time and special care given to their mother. Flora will be lovingly remembered by her five children, 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren: Yvonne (Douglas) Muir of Spalding and family, Wayne (Leah) Muir and children Aidan and Ian of Lloydminster, Keith (Debra) Muir and children Tiann and Jenna of Regina, James (Lisa) Muir and children Luke, Oliver and Ben of Rose Valley, Shelley Muir (Wade Kozak) and children Hunter and Kate of Saskatoon; and Yvonne and Douglas’s foster child, Dale (Violet) Hauck of Wainwright, AB and son Michael of Calgary; Wilford Gjerde of Marcelin and family, Karen (Darren Senger) Gjerde of Lloydminster and Bradley (Wendy) Gjrede and son Oakley of Dalmeny; Clifford Gjerde of Leask and family Corrine Winslow and children Matthew, Eric and Danielle of Saskatoon, Christine (Trent) Walker and children Brandon, Nicholas and Tylor and Lyndon Gjerde and son Justin of Saskatoon; Gerald Gjerde of Strathmore, AB and family Shawn Gjerde of Olds, AB and Tracy (John) Barbas and children William, Daniel and Ryan of Strathmore, AB; and Brenda Prevost (Gord Muir) of Kamloops, BC and family Jason (Sandra) Prevost and children Emily and Tyson of Olds, AB Trevor Prevost and son Christian of Regina and Melissa Prevost (Ken Rily) of Fort McMurray, AB; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Flora was predeceased by her husband, Olger (1968); grandson, Shane Muir (1974); daughter-in-law, Linda Gjerde (2003) and her long time friend and companion, Roman Rauw (2002); brothers and sisters: Lenore Rondeau, Alex (Lucia) Rondeau, Joseph Rondeau (infant), Ted Rondeau, Adele (Frank) Deschamps, Soulange (Bernard) Tipper, Cecile (Lionel) Deschamps, Arthur (May) Rondeau, Florence (Reinert) Aasen, Paul Rondeau, Isabel (Eric) Scheuneman, Sarah (Leo) Furber, John (Solonge) Rondeau and David (Emma) Rondeau; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Seymor (Melena) Gjerde, Mabel (Tom) McAllister and Helmer Gjerde. The Funeral Service for Flora will be held on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Hwy 5 East, Humboldt. Officiated by, Jenny Irwin. Others taking part in the service were: eulogist, Keith Muir and urn bearer, Clifford Gjerde. Honorary Pallbearers were “All those who shared in Flora’s life”. Interment will follow at a later date at Nut Lake Lutheran Cemetery.
