Grant Hanning
On Wednesday, February 27, 2008, Grant Hanning passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 78 years. Predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Hanning; his parents, Margaret and Leroy Hanning; brothers: John, Nevin, Harry (Betty), Howard (Beti) and Arlie Hanning. Grant will be lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law: Peggy Hanning, Ilene (Alex) Miles and Doris Anderson; brother-in-law, Harold (Gladys) Hunstad; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Warren Grant Hanning was born October 9, 1929 at Weyburn. He was raised on the family farm, taking over from his Dad when he retired. Grant farmed until the mid 1970's. He took his schooling at Weyburn Plains School. Grant was too young to serve, but four of his brothers served during WWII. One brother, John, was killed during the war. On September 11, 1965 Grant married Evelyn Hunstad at Weyburn. He was involved with the farming lives of his close neighbors, the Stewarts, Fletchers, Surrings, Payaks and Carpenters, always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. After moving to Weyburn, Grant worked as a parts man at the Co-op Implements and International Harvester, a janitor at the Court House and Weyburn Comprehensive, and sold Blanchard. He was also a bus driver for several years. In 1978 Grant's life changed when Evelyn was involved in a car accident. He became her constant care giver, and was very devout right up to her passing. Grant was very interested in local and family history, and was very knowledgeable in Weyburn and area history. He took personal pride in his knowledge of this area and of the province. Grant was a member of the Soo Line Museum and Western Development Museum. He had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all he knew and loved. Funeral service was held Thursday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Marj McLeod CLA officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. Pallbearers were: Marty Thompson, Roy Wall, Milton Wheler, Brad Stewart, Brian Hanning and Wayne Hunstad. Donations may be made in memory of Grant to the Tatagwa View Stainglass Window Fund or the Soo Line Historical Society, or a charity of choice. Margaret Rose Watson
On Thursday, February 28, 2008, Margaret Rose Watson passed away at Weyburn Special Care Home at the age of 67 years. Predeceased by her parents, Orville and Hazel Irvine; her husband, Elwood Watson; brother, Glenn Irvine and sister, Grace Irvine. Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Florence (Cyril) Roberts of Regina, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Margaret Rose Watson was born May 13, 1940 on the family farm near Yellow Grass. She was the youngest of four children born to Hazel and Orville Irvine. She attended Sunny Dale School and later attended high school in Yellow Grass. After obtaining her grade eleven, she went to Saskatoon where she attended nursing school. She was unable to finish nursing school as she decided to take a different career path. She came back to Regina and attended hair dressing school, she loved to do hair for the family as well as for friends. Margaret loved to play the accordion as a young child, she had a love for music. She was very fond of cats and was an avid reader. Margaret loved to go on family picnics with her sisters and brother, nieces and nephews. She enjoyed the visits from her sister Florence and brother-in-law, Cyril. Margaret attended church with the family in Yellow Grass and after marriage, she attended church in Weyburn. On May 28, 1971, Margaret married Elwood Watson in Weyburn. They made their home in Weyburn where she lived until her passing. Margaret loved to go back to Yellow Grass to visit her mother and sister while they were still living. She made many trips to Regina to visit her sister Florence and Florence's children. She was always eager to see her nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her family was very important to her. The family would like to thank Bernice, Denise and Karen for taking care of Margaret, as well as the staff of Weyburn Special Care Home. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Rev. Barnabas officiating. Interment to follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. Donations may be made in memory of Margaret to the Canadian Cancer Society. Dora Pearl Tangjerd
Dora Pearl Tangjerd was born at Leslie, SK, July 27, 1920 to Eli and Christina (Buchanan) Forster. She began her schooling at Leslie. The family subsequently lived in various locations in northeastern Saskatchewan. As a young woman, Dora moved to the Oungre area to work as a housekeeper for the McLeod family. She met Arne Tangjerd and they were married February 4, 1944. During WWII, they lived temporarily at Chilliwack, BC where Arne was stationed in the army. After the war, they returned to Saskatchewan and farmed near Estevan where their daughters were born and raised. Dora was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estevan where she belonged to the Lutheran ladies' group. Following Arne's death in 1975, Dora moved to Weyburn where her daughter and son-in-law Joan and Gary Schindel resided. She worked for many years at Singer Sewing and Furriers in Weyburn. She attended Zion Lutheran Church and was involved there also in the Lutheran ladies' group where she met many new friends. When her brother Edgar's health was failing, she decided to move to Regina in 1992 to spend time with him. When her own health began to deteriorate in 1997, she moved to Meadow Lake where Joan and Gary were living. In October 1999, she suffered a debilitating stroke. Since then, she resided at Northland Pioneer Lodge at Meadow Lake until her passing February 15, 2008. Dora was predeceased by her husband Arne Tangjerd, her parents Eli and Christina Forster, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Edgar and Alice Forster and Melvin and Audrey Forster, her sister and brother-in-law Elva and Jack Parkman, sisters- and brothers-in-law, Amanda and Magnus Lotten, Erling Tangjerd, Clara Tangjerd, Norma Tangjerd and George Gilbertson, as well as three nephews and one great niece. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughters Arlene Tangjerd of Yorkton, Joan (Gary) Schindel of Meadow Lake; grandchildren: Tina (Kelvin) Zavialetz, Courtney and Riley of Saskatoon; Kevin Schindel of Meadow Lake; and Ken (Randi) Schindel, James and Brandon of Unity; sister Olive (Edwin) Flynn and family of White Rock, BC; the surviving families of Elva and Jack Parkman, Melvin and Audrey Forster and Amanda and Magnus Lotten; brothers- and sisters-in-law Gertie Tangjerd and family, Harald Tangjerd and family, Mildred (Ivar) Moen and family, Don (Eleanor) Tangjerd and family, Orv (Verna) Tangjerd and family, Jim (Carol) Tangjerd and family and Irene Gilbertson and family. The funeral service was held at Hillcrest Funeral Chapel at Saskatoon February 19, with interment at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens, Estevan, February 20, with Pastor Ivar Moen of Saskatoon officiating. Marcel Jean Cancade
On Wednesday, February 27, 2008, Marcel Jean Cancade passed away at the age of 47 years at Regina General Hospital, Regina. He was predeceased by his father, Jean Cancade. Marcel will be greatly missed by his wife, Patricia Cancade, Weyburn; son, Dallas (Kyla) Cancade, Weyburn; grandson, Rylan Cancade, Weyburn; his mother, Rosa Cancade, Radville; sister, Lucille (Herb) MacDonald, Moose Jaw; brother, Laurent (Shirley) Cancade, Radville; foster brother, Kevin Fisher, Calgary, AB; his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Shirley Jacob, Weyburn; four sisters-in-law: Pam Jacob (Robert Purves), Red Deer, AB; Jill Arnott, Weyburn; Holly (Jack) Brower, Saskatoon; Rita Jacob, Carnduff; four brothers-in-law: Randy (Margo) Jacob, Weyburn; Kim Jacob, Red Deer, AB; Jesse Jacob, Red Deer; Monte Arnott, Weyburn as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Marcel Jean Cancade was born August 6, 1960 at Radville. On July 21, 1979 Marcel married Patricia Jacob at Weyburn and they had one son. Marcel worked as a supervisor at Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop in Weyburn for almost 25 years. He took great pleasure and pride in his family and spent time working on cars with his son, Dallas and taking his grandson, Rylan swimming and playing at the spray park. Marcel attended and successfully completed his Auxiliary Constables Course in Dundurn, on April 11, 2001 and became an Auxiliary Constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all that knew and loved him. Prayers were said Sunday, March 2 at 5:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church. The funeral mass was held Monday, March 3 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father Gerry Bauche, celebrant. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. The pallbearers were Mick Samenook, Don Stein, Todd Neuberger, Monte Arnott, Ed and Don Bourassa. Walter "Buck" Hiram Mooney
On February 14, 2008, Walter "Buck" Hiram Mooney of Edmonton, AB formerly of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 87 years. Buck is survived by his daughter, Merle (John) Carey of Cold Lake, AB; grandsons: Michael (Kelly) Carey of St. Albert, AB, and Sean (Gina) Carey of St. Albert, AB; great granddaughter, Kaitlyn; sisters: Theresa (William) Lloyd of Sarnia, ON, Helen Ruth (Robert) Dickson of Weyburn, Faye Johnson (Vern Pohl) of Weyburn; and brother, Joseph (Pearl) Mooney of Fort Quapelle, SK. Gunda Eleanore Chinski
March 4, 1919-March 4, 2008
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gunda Eleanore Chinski at the Regina General Hospital on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the age of 89 years. Gunda was born on March 4, 1919 to Emil and Pauline Grams, the sixth child of 13. She attended Waverly and Actonvale schools. On January 25, 1944, she married Leo John Chinski in Yellow Grass. They raised their eight children, two daughters, Pearl and Gunda and six sons, Leo, Maynard, Paul, Julian, Frank and Brian on their family farm located six miles north of Cedoux. In 1975 they retired to Cedoux where Gunda continued to reside even after being widowed in 1993. In 2004 she moved into Bison Manor in Weyburn where she resided until her passing. Gunda was a very independent woman and strong in character. Her interests and hobbies were many. She enjoyed gardening and watching the various birds outside her living room window, especially the hummingbirds and finches and missed them once she moved into Weyburn. Sewing, quilting, playing cards, tile rummy, scrabble, jigsaw puzzles, going to bingo and her monthly trips to Casino Regina or Bear Claw Casino kept her busy. Gunda enjoyed companionship of family and friends. Gunda was known for her doughnuts, rum and butter tarts at Christmas, hot cross buns at Easter, sauerkraut, cabbage rolls, headcheese, but most of all her special fried chicken. Gunda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Family was very important to her, they were first and foremost in her life. She had and showed a great love for her family, and on March 4, 2008, her life came full circle. Predeceased by her parents, Emil and Pauline Grams; her husband, Leo John Chinski; son-in-law, Ivan Hein; sisters: Evelyn in infancy, Elsie Wegwitz, Emily Reich, Emma Schultz, Mathilde Krueger, and brother, Lou Grams. Gunda's memory will always be treasured and cherished by daughters: Pearl (Jack) Gawel of Cedoux, and Gunda Hein of Weyburn; sons: Leo (Vicky) Chinski of Cedoux, Maynard (Loraine) Chinski of McTaggart, Paul Chinski (Sherli) of Airdrie, AB, Julian (Pat) Chinski of Cedoux, Frank (Laurie) Chinski of Strathmore, AB, and Brian Chinski of Saskatoon; 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren: Shelley (Dean) Paslawski, Tyler and Tanner, David Gawel, Jason Gawel (Alberta) and Kianna, Darren Gawel (Amy), Darla (Dan) Silljer, Rylan, Shaelyssa and Bryer, Keith (Treena) Hein, Kolten and Kaden, Angela Hein, Amanda Chinski, Robert Chinski, Krista (Adam) Bakken, Reise and Kaily, Jeff Chinski, Melissa Chinski (Trent), Dallas (Tonya) Chinski, Avery and Clay, Waylon (Hye Kyoung) Chinski, Logan Chinski, Jarrod (Julie) Chinski, and Wyatt, Shane Chinski, Brent Chinski, Lisa Chinski and Kaitlyn, Shallyn (Nick) Schinnour, Justin, Brandon and Kyler and Rachelle (Jorden) Verlage. Gunda is also survived by sisters: Linda Byam, Fort McLeod, AB, Ruth Schultz, Weyburn, Martha McFadden, Weyburn; brothers: Herb (Ivy) Grams, Weyburn, Rudy (Ann) Grams, Lethbridge, AB, and Reiny (Betty) Grams, Weyburn; sisters-in-law: Natalie Chinski, Saskatoon, and Mary Kuntz, Calgary, AB; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers for Gunda were held on Friday, March 7, at Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, and a Celebration of Life for Gunda was held on Saturday, March 8, at Zion Lutheran Church in Weyburn with Pastor Martin Olson and Marjorie McLeod CLA, officiating. Interment followed in the Cedoux Community Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Gunda's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Active pallbearers were grandsons: Darren Gawel, Robert Chinski, Jeff Chinski, Logan Chinski, Shane Chinski and Brent Chinski. We the family of Gunda Eleanore Chinski, would like to thank all of our friends, relatives and neighbors for their compassion, support and thoughtfulness either by cards, flowers, deeds, words of comfort and encouragement and for your presence at the services as well as donations made in her memory. Arthur Helmut Mahnke
On Friday, March 7, 2008, Arthur Helmut Mahnke of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 84 years. Predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Fanny Mahnke; sister, Edyth Mahnke; brother, Harry Mahnke and his son, William Mahnke; sisters-in-law: Violet Wright, Priscila (Edwin) Wright, Ursula (Mike) Hovland; mother and father-in-law, Robert (Varo) Coleman; brother-in-law, Ken Mott. Arthur will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Lavica Mahnke of Weyburn, and their son, Ron (Lois) Mahnke of Lampman, and their children: Kevin (Sheri) and Abbie (Brent); great grandchildren: Mikaila, Tori, Morgan and Alayna; one sister, Rita Broshko (Bernie) of North Battleford, and their children: Erin (Li Teen) and Kyla (Dave); brother-in-law, Frank (Eva) Coleman of Weyburn; sisters-in-law: Ethel (Louis) Toeppner of Stoughton, and Laverne Mott of Regina; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Arthur Helmut Mahnke was born January 17, 1924 at Odessa. He attended grade one in a Catholic school in Odessa. The family moved to Lemburg after their general store burned to the ground. Art was very active in all school sports, especially field day, baseball and hockey. At around 16 years of age, he left school to work in the family general store. During the war years, he worked in an airplane factory in Thunder Bay. After the war, he began his 38 year career as a grain buyer for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. On December 28, 1950, Arthur married Lavica Coleman of Froude. Their only child, Ron, was born in 1952. Arthur's career took the family from Parkman to Handsworth, Creelman, Moosomin, Indian Head, Balcarres and Fort Qu'Appelle, where they retired until moving to Weyburn in August of 2006. In 1966, Art set the provincial record for grain buying. Although raised Lutheran, he has always attended the United Church with Lavica. Art enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, hockey, curling, golfing, fishing and bowling. He was happiest playing, not watching. In later years, he became an avid card player. He has served as a School Trustee, Rink Board member and Minor Hockey Coach. Art's true joy showed through the eyes of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His friends on coffee row helped fill his days and the family is grateful for all their support. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by all he knew and loved. A Memorial Service was held Tuesday, March 11, at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Rev. Barnabas officiating. Interment followed on Wednesday, March 12, at Regina Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined; donations may be made in memory of Arthur to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to a charity of the Donor's choice. Ethel Eileen Katherine Jones
On Monday, March 10, 2008, Ethel Eileen Katherine "Effie" Jones of Pangman, passed away at the Radville Marian Health Centre at the age of 85 years. Predeceased by her parents, Anne and Leslie Lowes; her husband, Gronwy; sister, Alice; daughter, Heather; step-sisters, Geraldine and Dolores. Ethel will be lovingly remembered by her family: daughter, Eileen Tunall of Pangman, and her children: Gayle, Darryl and Brady; son, Kenneth Jones of Regina; daughter, Gloria Jones of Radisson, and her children, Adrianne and Margo (daughter of Heather) and great grandchildren; step-sister, Estelle Gross of Lethbridge, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Effie was born February 3, 1923 in Tonkin. Her family moved to Pangman in 1924 and she took her schooling there and in Rhien. On December 18, 1941 she married Thomas Gronwy 'T.G.' Jones at Pangman where they raised their four children. Effie worked alongside T.G. on their farm in the Amulet area, always taking her "Meals on Wheels" to the 'back 40'. When they moved to town, she spent endless hours at their business, Jones Implements, selling repairs and parts. T.G. and Effie were actively involved with Bethel Assembly, where Effie enjoyed teaching Sunday School for many years. They were also involved in various organizations and community groups. Effie's father was in WWI and she kept active in the Royal Canadian Legion on his behalf, always placing a wreath on November 11. She was an avid collector of dolls and antiques, and was an auction enthusiast. Effie's attention to detail and order showed in her sewing as well as her garden, which always attracted hummingbirds, much to Effie's delight. Her most cherished times were spent with her family, creating memories of fun, laughter and warmth. Effie's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have learned the immeasurable value of family from her. Funeral service was held Monday, March 17, at 2:00 p.m. from Bethel Mission Church, Pangman, with Rev. Rodger Halvorsen officiating. Interment followed in Pangman Cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Tom Webb, Elwood White, Rick Jones, Darryl Tunall, Wayne Lozinsky and Byron Ledingham.
