- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -ROBERTS - Arthur Rossieris, born on April 4, 1920 in Calgary, Arthur passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 1997, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness. He leaves his loving wife of fifty-five years, Fern; daughter Janne (John), son Dean (Lauris), daughter Trudi (Dan); and eight beloved grandchildren. Arthur served overseas with the First Canadian Paratroop Battalion. Upon his return to Calgary, he resumed his career with Calgary City Police. He was the first Canadian Police Polygraph Examiner and lectured and trained internationally in this field. He retired from the Calgary Police with the rank of Chief Inspector after thirty-four years of service. He then joined ATCO Industries as Chief of Security until his retirement to Victoria in 1986. Art was an avid sports enthusiast. He played for the Calgary Stampeders and coached football at Crescent Heights High School for sixteen years. He curled for many years, highlighted by winning the Canadian Police Championship. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. David Ripley and Hazel and Donna, the Palliative Response Team from the Victoria Hospice, and the many dear friends and neighbors who supported us during his long journey. SHAW - Mrs. Marie Shaw, beloved wife of Mr. Alex Shaw of Calgary, passed away suddenly at the Foothills Hospital on November 30, 1997, at the age of 72 years. Marie was a loving wife of fifty-one years. She was avid in sports such as swimming and bowling. Marie was along-standing member of the Eagles Club. She is the loving mother of Sherryn and Ralph VanHorne of Saanichton, B.C., Larry and Betty Shaw, Randy Shaw, David and Debbie Shaw, Brenda Clandfield, all of Calgary, and Gloria and John McGregor of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; as well as fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by six brothers and two sisters. WILSON - Geraldine (Gerry) Wilson of Calgary and formerly of Saint John, New Brunswick, passed away at the Sarcee Auxiliary Nursing Home on September 2, 1997 at the age of 88 years. Gerry is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Harris Warnock of Bragg Creek, Alta.; two grandsons and their wives, Kent and Corene, and Greg and Laura; two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Zachary; a sister Sybil Pelton of New Brunswick; and several nieces and nephews. The family wish to extend their sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of the second floor of the Sarcee Nursing Home for their care and compassion. Private Family Services will be held. VARTY - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Frederick (Fred) Edward Varty, beloved husband of Mrs. Daphne Varty of Bragg Creek, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on October 24, 1997 at the age of 68 years, after a brave battle with cancer for the past year. Fred was born June 5, 1929 and raised at Provost, Alberta. He began his career working in the Leduc Oilfield in 1949 and has since been dedicated to the oil industry, having started his companies, Comanche Drilling and Varco Equipment Ltd. He will be remembered for his wit and great sense of humour as well as his keen interest in collectibles. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Daphne of Bragg Creek; daughter Laurie Ott of Calgary; son Mike Varty (Donna Cushing) of Bragg Creek; and his grandchildren, Christopher and Aaron Ott, Lynsey and Megan Varty; his granddog "Dutchess"; brother Carman Varty of Edmonton; sister Peggy (Elmer Spilde) of Calgary; sister-in-law Betty Varty; and mother-in-law Mollie Austin, both of Provost, Alberta; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. Fred was predeceased by his son Daryl in 1996, mother Jennie in 1954, father Joshua in 1965 and brother Carl in 1990. VAUGHAN - Yvonne Vivian Vaughan passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Centre on Wednesday, December 10, 1997 at the age of 57 years. Yvonne is survived by her children, Darwin of Calgary, Darrel and Cam of Oliver, B.C., Kim (Dean) Horvath of Calgary and Jacob Salkeld of Cranbrook, B.C.; as well her dear grandchildren, Davin, Jamie, Sheryl, Kari, Ashley and Dillon; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Hope. She is also survived by her dear friends, Donna, Shaunee, Mark and Mona. Yvonne was strong willed, independent with a generous heartand a wonderful sense of humour. VEILLEUX - Jessica Marie Veilleux, beloved daughter of Charles Veilleux of Calgary and Harbhagen Veilleux of Victoria, B.C., passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 27, 1997 at the age of 20 years. Jessica loved life. She enjoyed snowboarding and was starting an exciting new job. She adored her cat Gucci and her dog Finnigan, who will sadly miss her. Besides her loving parents, Jessica is survived by her sister Danielle; her very special friend Dave Phillipson; paternal grandparents, Charles and Patricia Veilleux; aunts and uncles, Joanna and Larry Hopp of Calgary, Caren and John Leslie of Armena, AB, Tim and Lisa Veilleux, and Tom and Wendy Veilleux, all of Calgary. She is also survived by maternal grandmother Bhagwant Dheensaw; aunts and uncles, Gurcharn and Robert Beckett, Joga and Juswinder Dheensaw, and Kerpal Reid; as well as many great-aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. WILSON - It is with great sadness Karen Greenwood announces the death of her great-aunt Mildred Mary Wilson of Calgary who passed away peacefully at the Southwood Nursing Home on July 1, 1997 at the age of 88 years. Mildred was born September 10, 1908 in Otford, Kent, England and she and husband Dudley later settled in Calgary. In recent years Auntie Mildred enjoyed watching her favourite country music channel and her Toronto Bluejay's baseball games. She felt comfort from her kitten "Snowball". Mildred is survived by her great-niece Karen and her husband Robin Greenwood and their children, Lisa, Murray and Tim; and great-nephew Brad Fraser, all of Calgary; two nephews, Raymond Fraser of Calgary, Rod and his wife Val Fraser of Fort Saskatchewan; niece Marilyn McKinnon of Calgary; sister Mary and her husband Arthur West, and their daughter Mary and her husband Tim Richards of Kent, England; nephew William and his wife Gerta Swan of Langley, BC. SMITH - Harold Ward Smith passed away suddenly on November 6, 1997 at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his loving wife Alta; two sons, Tom (Nell) of Calgary and Bill (Nancy) of Ottawa; his brother Gordon of Ottawa; three grandchildren, Kathryn (Jeff) Lefebvre, Colleen and David; and three great-grandchildren, Meagen, Ryan and Matthew.
