- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -MURPHY - Shirley Ann Murphy, beloved wife of Mr. Jim Murphy of Calgary, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer, on June 18, 1997 at the age of 51 years. Besides her loving husband, Shirley is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Mike Palmer of Port Alberni, BC; two grandchildren, Greggory and Jennifer. She is also survived by her mother Pauline Cembal of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario; one brother and three sisters, Michael, Paulette and Bonnie of Sault Ste Marie, and Donna of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her father Michael Cembal. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (Second Floor, 215 - 12 Avenue S.E., Calgary, Alberta T2G 1A2). Private Funeral Services were held at Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday, June 21, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation followed. Arrangements were entrusted to MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME. (6/22/1997).
MURRAY - Janet Murray died peacefully in Edmonton, Alberta on July 16, 1997. Born in Vancouver on May 27, 1901. Janet was the oldest daughter of Alexander Murray and Kate Skinner Murray, both Scottish immigrants to Canada in the late 1800's. Janet was a telephone operator and supervisor for the BC Telephone Company, Fairmont office, and later, when dial telephones prevailed, worked for the Long Distance department. She retired more than thirty-five years ago. Janet is survived by her sister Zelpha Wood; two nieces, Kay Brennan of Calgary, Marnie Wood of Edmonton; and one nephew Ian Wood of Richmond; as well as ten great-nieces and nephews and their children, and many cousins and friends. Janet was known and loved for her wonderful sense of humor, her energy and her love of fun. A special thanks from the family is extended to the staff at the Waterford in West Edmonton for the many kindnesses and good care given to Janet over the past three years. A Memorial Service will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home in Vancouver on Friday, July 25 at 1:00 p.m (7/21/1997).
COLLINS - George M., passed away June 13, 1997 in Cobble Hill, B.C. Born February 25, 1927 in Andover, Massachusetts. George was a Petroleum Geologist in Calgary from 1953 until the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his wife Sarah; sons, Joel and Scott; daughter Jennifer; granddaughters, Gwendolyn and Natalie; and many friends. Cremation. Private family arrangements. COLVIN - Mr. James Dixon Notman (Jim) Colvin passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Thursday, November 27, 1997 after a brief battle with cancer. He was in his 87th year. Jim was a loving devoted husband, father and grandfather. We are thankful for a multitude of wonderful memories. He was predeceased by his beloved wife May (April 1991), and his brothers, Bill (1994), and John (1997). Jim will be lovingly remembered by his children, a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and her husband Bob Jewell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and his wife Sharon, Ken and his wife Wendy. He will be deeply missed by his eight grandchildren, Jennifer Cheng (Shi-Jen), Joanna and Matthew; Laurie Kangas (Glenn), Jeffrey and Keri (fiance Rob Tychkowsky), Nathan and Niki; and one great-grandchild Vivian Cheng. Jim was born near Glasgow, Scotland on September 9, 1911. He came to Calgary in 1920. Jim married his beloved May in 1939, after a ten year courtship and they enjoyed fifty-two years of married life until May's death in 1991. Jim began his distinguished and respected sales career with Obsco Beauty Supply in 1939. He later purchased the Calgary branch and to this day it is a thriving family business. He remained an active member of the Allied Beauty Association throughout his career. Jim loved music and enjoyed singing with many church choirs and choral organizations, including Excelsior Glee Club, Men's Chorus and Confederation Park Seniors Choir. He and his family were a vital part of North Hill (Rosedale) United Church for many years. Jim was appreciated for his love of life, a genuine interest in people and his wonderful sense of humour. He will be fondly remembered by all who have known him. CONIAH - Orimisa Peter Coniah - Cole, beloved companion of Linda Salayka, passed away suddenly while on a family vacation in Seattle, Washington on Wednesday, August 27, 1997 at the age of 38 years. He will also be lovingly remembered by his children, Matilda Cole, Tricia, Omolatelae Sean Coniah, Iyamide Mahalia Coniah and Sholade Coniah; his mother Mrs. Matilda Josephine Cole; brother Prince (Ethel) Cole, all of Freetown, Sierra Leone; and two sisters, Irene Healy of Ottawa, and Patricia (Sylvester) Fofie of Calgary. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews; and wife Ayodele Sombo. Peter was born at Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa, August 4, 1959, coming to Calgary in 1980. He attained his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Calgary and later his Master's Degree at the University of Manitoba. Recently he was a Project Manager with TELUS Communications. Peter will be dearly missed by all his family and friends. Special thanks to TELUS, family, and friends for all of their special care. CONN - Gerald Duncan passed away on June 3, 1997 in Kalispell, Montana at the age of 57 years. Gerry was born on September 7, 1939 to Nancy and Fred Conn. He went to school in Calgary, served in the RCAF, and served in Egypt with United Nations. Gerry returned to Canada and then went to England and married Jean in Nottingham. They have two daughters, Nancy and Geraldine. After residing in England, the family came to Canada in 1973 where Gerry resumed his profession as a mechanic with Alpha Dairies. He then changed careers to an auto body parts salesman, with his last employment with Gregg Distributors. While Gerry found it difficult to express his feelings, he was always there for friends and family alike, always putting their feelings first. He truly had a big heart. Friends and family have a great respect for him, and Gerry will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Gerry leaves a wife, two daughters, sons-in-law, and two lovable grandsons, Shawn and Matthew, and the joy of his life, his pet poodle "Sammy". CONNELY - Connely Sr. Robert (Bob), of Airdrie, formerly of Hamilton and Toronto, longtime member of R.W.D.S.U., passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, December 25, 1997 at the age of 71 years. He is the loving father of a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Jane of Toronto; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pat and Fred Van Witsen, Jill and Larry Yon, and Michele Connely, all of Calgary; three grandchildren, Kristoffer, Kelly and Tricia. Bob is also survived by three sisters and a brother. A Private Family Service will be held at a later date. LAWRENCE - Stanley Lawrence of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Bow Crest Nursing Home on October 26, 1997 at the age of 93 years. Stanley will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Barbara; his daughter Shirley (Don) Sarsfield; his daughter-in-law Linda Lawrence; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Stanley, his granddaughter Wendy, and by his sister Mae Ryder.
