- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -McLEAN - Marie McLean (nee Malloy), beloved wife of Mr. Hugh John McLean of fifty years, passed away peacefully at her residence on December 14, 1997, after a lengthy illness at the age of 79 years. Throughout her life, Marie volunteered at the Providence Creche, now known as the Providence Child Development Centre. Besides her loving husband, Marie is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral Services will be held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church (5340 - 4 Street S.W.), today, December 17, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. John L. Maes, Celebrant. McLEAY - Mr. Douglas Roy McLeay of Strathmore, Alberta, passed away November 27, 1997 at the age of 44 years. He worked as a truck driver, bartender, an R.C.M.P. officer at the Calgary Airport and as a Registered Emergency Paramedic with the City of Calgary for twenty years. He is survived by his wife Sharon; son Jesse; mother Shirley; sisters, Val and Deidre; and brothers, Dwain and Clayton. He was a loving husband, devoted father, dedicated hockey fan and an exceptional friend to many. Those who entered Doug's life were treated with honesty, compassion, humor, practical jokes and a loving friendship. He endured with courage more pain than any man should have to, and was loved more than any man could wish for. His family and friends will miss him very much and remember him always. Memorial Services will be held at Strathmore High School on Sunday, December 7, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. Dress restrictions: Casual wear (jeans, runners, etc.). Bring photos and mementos to share. Guests are encouraged to participate in a memorial floor hockey game following the reception. McLENNAN - Gladys Everett (nee Flint) McLennan passed away suddenly November 17, 1997 at home in her 103rd year. She is survived by her sons, Allan of Calgary, David (Marline) of Spruce Grove, Gordon (Jean) of Calgary; daughters-in-law, Vivienne of Olds and Janet of Winnipeg; eleven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren; and special close nieces, including Dorothy Luck of Edmonton and Dr. Clare Flint of Montreal. She was predeceased by her husband Alex McLennan in 1973; great-granddaughter Tara in 1979; son John in 1988; stepson Rory in 1995, and his son Robbie in 1997. Gladys was born in Montreal, May 2, 1895, attended school there and received her musical training in violin in Leipzig, Germany, New York and Chicago. She moved to Edmonton and began her professional career in 1918. She became a prominent soloist in concert and CJCA radio, often accompanied by her sister Mrs. Mary Luck, and played in the Edmonton Symphony. Marriage brought her to Calgary where she abandoned her career to raise five sons and become a championship curler. She returned to her music in the mid-1940's, playing with the Calgary Symphony and was a founding member of the Calgary Philharmonic, playing until the early 1970's. She was a member of the Musical Coterie Club of Calgary, a Life Member of the Calgary Musician's Protective Association, AF of M and, in 1979, received an Alberta Achievement Award for "Service to Music" in the province. McLELLAN - Murdock passed away at his home in Parksville, BC, on Wednesday, October 15, 1997 at the age of 73 years. Born at Bonnington Falls, BC, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the war for five years and then was a member of the Calgary Fire Department for nineteen years. Murdie is survived by three sisters, Janet, Margaret and Muriel; and his nephews and nieces. McLEOD - Ethel Elizabeth McLeod passed away at the Foothills Hospital on October 31, 1997 at the age of 70 years. Ethel is survived by her children, Bill and his wife Sharon, Blaine and his wife Lynn, Brenda and her husband Bob, and Lyle and his wife Kirsten; and grandchildren, Heather, Stephen, Scot, Christopher, Alison and Callum. She is also survived by her sister Isabel, and brothers, Blake and Jim. Ethel was predeceased by her husband Earl. Ethel was born in Langham, Saskatchewan and has resided in Calgary since 1971. The family wishes to express their gratitude to friends, neighbours at Horizon Village Varsity and care-givers who have given her so much comfort and companionship. McLACHLAN - Mildred (Millie) Florence McLachlan (nee Ferris) of Calgary, passed away at the Glenmore Park Auxiliary Hospital on Sunday, December 28, 1997 at the age of 85 years. Millie was born on February 16, 1912 in Wawanesa, Manitoba. She lived in Flin Flon, Manitoba for over thirty-five years and has resided in Calgary since 1975. Millie volunteered at the Kerby Centre, and Red Cross, and was a member of the Calgary Caledonian Society. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed horticultural fairs and square dancing. Millie is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Dora McLachlan of Faro, Yukon, Dave and Pat McLachlan of La Ronge, Saskatchewan; a son-in-law Colin Acheson of Calgary; six grandchildren, Robbie and Erin Acheson, Jason and Crystal McLachlan, and Mike and Sara McLachlan; as well as special friend Alec Geals of Calgary. She was predeceased by her daughter Roxie Acheson in July 1997, and her husband Robert McLachlan in February 1971. Funeral Services will be held at St. Stephen's Anglican Church (1121 - 14 Avenue S.W.), on Wednesday, December 31, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with the Right Rev. Fred Crabb officiating. McLAREN - Lloyd Wesley McLaren. On October 24, 1997 God lovingly and compassionately called a special angel home. Lloyd Wesley McLaren lived a life full of love, generosity and kindness and strength in the face of adversity. He was born June 13, 1926, at home, in Saskatchewan. His family moved to Golden Prairie in 1928, where he went to school and helped with the farming. They moved to Lashburn in 1945, and in the interim spent time in hospitals in Banff, Lashburn and Lamont. In spite of this, he completed high school and entered Miller's Business College in 1947. In 1948, they moved to Edmonton and LLoyd began his career in the oil industry as an accountant with Northern Development Company Ltd. From 1950 to 1957, he worked for Paul Guthrie Development in the same capacity. In 1957, he and Carl Guthrie, also with other members of the Guthrie family, formed Guthrie McLaren Drilling Limited, eventually expanding from two to twelve rigs. He married the love of his life, Joanne Radcliffe, on November 20, 1963 and had three children. They sold Guthrie McLaren in 1978, by Lloyd remained extremely active in the oil industry with the expansion and operation of several smaller companies. After the 1987 tornado destroyed much of their equipment, Lloyd "retired". He remained active in a great number of business pursuits from his office at home until the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his loss and celebrate his life, his loving wife Joanne; three children, Heather Rankin (Rob), James (Dyael) and Scott; six grandchildren, Alexander, Christopher, Kevin, Sian, Schyler and Gabrielle; his sister Mildred Carruthers (Stuart) of Lashburn; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Florence McLaren, and his sisters, Evelyn Hansen and Jean Olsen. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Canadian Arthritis Society. Services to be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 28 October 1997, at Highlands United Church, 11305 - 64 Street, Edmonton, AB, Rev. John Burrill officiating. Luncheon and Interment to follow. McLAUCHLAN - Richard John McLauchlan, beloved husband to Mrs. Grace McLauchlan of Calgary, passed away suddenly at home on July 10, 1997 at the age of 44 years. Richard will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his son Michael; daughter Melissa; his parents, John and Phyllis McLauchlan of Winnipeg; his brother Gerald (Aija) McLauchlan of Winnipeg; and by his nephews, Geoffery and Darryl, both of Winnipeg. He will also be sadly missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
