Mary Elizabeth Lieverse
(November 22, 1933 - January 15, 2012)
The family of Mary Lieverse is saddened to announce her passing at the Beaverlodge General Hospital on Sunday, January 15, 2012, at the age of 78 years.
Mary was born in Schyf, Holland on November 22, 1933, the second eldest of eight children born to John Van Ham and Antonetta Nouws. She was raised in Holland and immigrated to Canada with her family at the age 19 in February 1953. While singing in the choir at St. Augustine church in Taber, Alberta, she met and fell in love with Adriaan Lieverse, also an immigrant from Holland. They married on November 6, 1957.
In March 1960, with their first born son Kors, they left Mary’s family to travel North to buy a farm in Beaverlodge. Six more children followed quickly, John, Clayton, Brian, Ann, Marina & Lisa. Mary was very committed to raising her large family, but made the time to also commit numerous volunteer hours to local groups like St Patrick’s Church in Rio Grande, Rio Grande Community Association, Beaverlodge 4H Beef Club, Beaverlodge Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store, and she was a member of the Rio Grande Catholic Women’s League for 48 years.
Mary worked at home, helping Adriaan with the farming, and caring for her family by having a large garden, baking bread, and making homemade soup. Mary also sewed and knitted for her family and many more lucky children, as Mary knit toques for infants born in the Beaverlodge and Grande Prairie Hospitals for many years. When the children were all in school, Mary drove the school bus, and continued for 18 years. Mary enjoyed doing acts of kindness for her family and neighbours, as she was always baking, knitting and ensuring that families in need had warm hands and bread in their bellies. In the past thirty years, Mary enjoyed spending countless hours with her grandchildren at home and travelling to support their many activities. When they retired from farming, Adriaan & Mary enjoyed travelling and visiting with their friends and relatives.
Mary is survived by her children, sons Kors (Cheryl), John (Bev), Clayton (Ginny), Brian (Tracy) all of Beaverlodge, daughters Ann (Ben) Lastiwka of Willingdon, Marina (Stuart) Oatway of Rycroft, Lisa (Jim) Dorscheid of Valleyview, sisters Jean Van Tryp, Ann (Frank) Vanden Broek, Lisa (Fritz) Braat, brothers Frank (Ann) and Adriaan (Marlene) Van Ham, all of Bow Island, 29 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives that were very dear to her.
She was predeceased by her husband Adriaan Lieverse, by her three siblings in Holland that passed away in childhood: John, Petronella and Cornelius; in Canada, by her parents John & Antonetta Van Ham, brothers in-law Paul Van Tryp, Kors, Case Lieverse and sister in-law Truus Lieverse.
Prayer Services will be held on Friday, January 20, 2012 at 7:00pm at the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Beaverlodge.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the St Patrick’s Cemetery in Rio Grande. A fellowship will follow the interment at the Rio Grande Community Hall.

Clarice Thelma Paul
(June 22, 1920 - January 1, 2012)
Clarice Thelma Paul (nee Walkemeyer), born on June 22, 1920, in Camrose, Alberta, passed away at the QE II Hospital on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at the age of 91. The second of three children born to Ted and Clara Walkemeyer, Clarice was a dynamic lady, a devout Christian, and devoted to her family. Early years were spent at the Walkemeyer family home, cleaning, hauling firewood and washing clothes for the many people who stayed at the family boarding house. Times were tough, and money was tight, but the family always celebrated the special times. In her youth, Clarice graduated from high school in Camrose, and after high school took a job as an operator with Alberta Government Telephones. On January 19, 1941 Clarice wed the love of her life, William (Bill) Paul in Camrose. After the war, Clarice and the family moved to the Peace Country – 17 hours by train to get to Grande Prairie, and on her arrival promptly said “look at the mud” and if she could, she would have turned around and got right back on the train. But she stayed, and built and a wonderful life with her husband for the next 50 years. Never one to sit around, Clarice had several ‘jobs’ over her life. In 1948 she opened the first soft ice cream parlor in Grande Prairie ‘The Milky Way’. She did the books for the family business ‘The Grande Prairie Iron Works’, and after a short retirement, in 1985 owned / operated ‘Picture Perfect Frame & Gallery’. She was always busy, achieving her driver’s license in her 40’s, raising kids and singing in Sweet Adelines in her 60’s, achieving her Certified Picture Framer designation and learning to swim in her 70’s and travelling the world in her 70’s and 80’s. Clarice was active in the church, serving as junior choir leader, an organist for services, and was the first woman elected to the Church Council. Clarice was devout in her faith, and attended service every Sunday. Clarice leaves to cherish her memory her children William “Bill” (Judy) Paul and Susan. Her grandchildren David (Leslie) Paul, Micheal Charles (Christine) Rappel, Douglas (Kathleen) Rappel, Sean & Lauren Turner, and great-grandchildren Graham, Alexandra, Emma, Gregory, Jordan, Gabrial, Cassidy, Bradley, Emily, and numerous nieces and nephews. Clarice was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1991, her brother Allen in 1936, her sister Isabel in 2007, her daughter Patricia in 1973, and her grandson Allen in 1994. Visitation will be held at Oliver’s Funeral Chapel on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 7:00 pm. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 11:00 am, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grande Prairie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the QEII Foundation – Palliative Care, or to a charity of one’s choice.
