Anna Winiewski, longtime resident of Grande Prairie and previously of the Teepee Creek region, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the age of 90 years.
She was born January 19, 1921 in Chicago, and spent her childhood in Czechoslovakia and then on her parent’s homestead near Mapova, Alberta.
She is survived by her sons Richard (Loretta), Gerald, Bernard; granddaughter, Bronwyn; brother Paul (Frances); sisters Julia Guelly and Elsie Carter. She was predeceased by husband John; parents George and Anna Stefanik, brothers Steve Stefanik and George Stefanik, sisters Amelia Megley and Olga Watson.
A graveside funeral will be held at 2:30pm on Monday, January 9, 2012, at the Teepee Creek Cemetery.
Shirley Marie Boyd
(December 19, 1935 - January 5, 2012)
Shirley Marie Boyd (Norton) passed away suddenly on January 5, 2012 at the QEII Hospital with her family by her side.
Shirley was born December 19, 1935 in Grande Prairie, AB the youngest of 11 children to Jerome and Lillian Norton. She was raised in Bezanson with a large loving family. She married the love of her life Robert Boyd on April 18, 1952. They were blessed with 6 children. Mom and Dad spent their early married life working and living at the Norton Sawmill, they then purchased a farm in the Crystal Creek district. They sold the farm and moved to Grande Prairie in 1965. Mom worked at Sears Canada Catalogue for over 25 years.
Mom had a deep love for her family and was our family “Anchor”. Mom had the patience of a saint and always had a smile on her face. Mom was loved by all who know her and made many dear friends over the years. Mom loved to play cards, crochet, bake, watch curling and do jigsaw puzzles among many other things, but most importantly spend time with her family.
Mom is survived by her 6 children, Gary (Marian), Frank (Joanne), Sandra (Phil) Corfe, Darrell (Lynn), Roger (Jackie), and Kathy; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; her brothers Earl, Ralph (Pauline), and Ed; sisters Grace Menard, Ruby Boyer and Laura Patterson; sisters-in-law Barbara Childs, Jean Rockarts, Marjorie Cline, Nancy Whalen, Lois Boyd, and Muriel (Bill) Gidley; brother-in-law Bobby Kimble; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends too numerous to mention.
She was predeceased by her husband Bob in 1990; her granddaughters Melissa Boyd and Amy Boyd; her parents; her brothers Fred and Clyde; sisters Olive Stewart and Stella Kimble.
Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Grande Prairie Cemetery at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow at the Golden Age Center.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
Nick Koleba
(February 6, 1936 - January 13, 2012)
Nick Koleba, longtime resident of Little Smoky, Alberta, passed away on Friday, January 13, , 2012 at the age of 75 years.
Nick was born in Willow Trail, AB, the 6th of 8 children. He married Raya Rosadiuk and they settled on homestead land in Little Smoky, where they raised 2 daughters. When he wasn’t running heavy equipment or farming, Nick enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing his guitar and harmonica. He was always ready to visit and wouldn’t hesitate to set aside work and invite people in for coffee.
Nick will be sadly missed by his wife Raya, with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage, daughter Roxanne (Darrel) Perron, daughter Audrey (Joe) Arnault and grandsons Taylor & Logan Perron and Zacary Arnault.
He was predeceased by his parents Ephraim & Domka Koleba, brothers Philip Koleba, Gust Koleba and sister Helen Kalinsky.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 1:00pm at the Little Smoky Community Centre, in Little Smoky AB.
William Bell Simpson
(October 24, 1922 - January 15, 2012)
William (Bill) Simpson, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at the QEII Hospital.
Bill was born in Edmonton and resided there until he joined the RCAF at age 18. While stationed at Brandon, Manitoba, he met and married Ella Cross. They returned to Edmonton in 1945. They moved to Grande Prairie in 1950, where Bill completed his chartered account degree.
Bill was very active in Rotary for 60 years. He served as President and Treasurer for many years. He was on the Municipal Hospital Board for 27 years, serving as Chairman during the construction of the QEII Hospital.
He will be remembered as a loving and patient husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; by his wife of 69 years Ella; daughters Sharon Dobko, Wendy Derrheim and son James (Jude) Simpson; grandchildren Brent (Tracey) Derrheim, Greg (Colleen) Dobko, Trevor Derrheim, Barb (Martin) Lelievre, Yaman Simpson, and Ali Simpson. He will also be remembered by his great-grandchildren of whom he was so proud, Annikka and Logan Dobko, Isabel Lelievre, Zoe and Charlie Derrheim. Bill will be remembered by all those who knew him for his integrity, loyalty, honesty and sharp sense of humor.
Services to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, January 20, 2012 at 11:00am at St. Paul’s United Church in Grande Prairie.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to QEII Hospital Foundation or St. Paul’s United Church Building Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
Ellen Farwell nee: Clark, of Hanna
Ellen Farwell, beloved wife of Russell Farwell of Hanna passed away peacefully after a battle with cancer at the Hanna Nursing Home on January 31, 2005 at the age of 85 years.
Besides her loving husband of 54 years she will be lovingly remembered by her children, Mary of Brooks, Bob (Wanda) of Calgary, Ken of Drumheller, son-in-law Terry Ladner, 6 grandchildren, Rachel, Chris, Shawn, Jeff, Russell, Melissa, 3 great grandchildren, Marina, Emma, and Sarah. Ellen was predeceased by her youngest daughter Helen in 1985. Service of Remembrance for Ellen was held Thursday February 3, 2005 from the Craigmyle United Church (Craigmyle, Alberta) at 2:00 P.M. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes of Hanna were in care of the arrangements.
