Violet Myrtle Hart, of Hanna
January 7, 1918-January 13, 2005
Violet Myrtle Hart was born on January 7, 1918 at home near Sedalia and passed away peacefully on January 13, 2005 almost a week after her 87th birthday. She was the oldest of three children born to Myrtle and Emerson Heatherington. She attended school at Algeo, Sedalia and New Brigden schools and then continued her education by taking a Home Economics course at Vermillion College. She worked at a variety of jobs in the early years; telephone operator and housekeeper. It was at a job in Okotoks that she met her future husband, William Hart. They lived in various places, but eventually returned to Sedalia and Violet began working as casual help at the Sedalia Store. This later led to the manager's position, a position she proudly held for 25 years.
Violet and Bill separated and later divorced and when she retired from the store in 1978, she moved to Hanna and shared many happy years with her companion, Bill Matheson. She worked alongside Bill at the Hanna Golf Club in the summer and the Hanna Curling Club in the winter. The town of Hanna soon became her "home" where she made many wonderful friends. She volunteered for several organizations including the Food Bank, Thrift Store and the Hospital Auxiliary, just to name a few. She was always willing to lend a helping hand.
She had many interests and hobbies that she was famous for, including curling, sewing, crocheting. Many of her family and friends were given pieces of her handiwork to treasure. Every niece, nephew, great-niece and nephew were given a pair of slippers and mitts. She also loved making dolls and doll clothes and many children have those as well. There were always lots of projects on the go whenever you would stop to visit. She loved music and loved to play the piano. She had a passion for gardening, and she and Bill would proudly show off their beautiful garden and the ribbons they often won at the Hanna Fair.
Although she was never blessed to have children of her own, there was always an extra sparkle in her eye whenever she was around them. She loved to spend time with her nieces and nephews and always had a keen interest in their lives. This continued on even as they got older and moved farther away and she always loved to receive pictures of new babies and milestones in their lives. She was very proud to be "Auntie Vi".
She retired from many years of working and lived for a short time at the Hanna Lodge before moving to the Long Term Care Unit where she resided until her death.
She was predeceased by her father Emerson (1967), mother Myrtle (1970), companion Bill Matheson (2002), brother-in-law Ken Blair (1991), and niece Shelley Huston (1989).
She is survived by her sister Lucile Blair and her family, Phyllis (Eric) McGhee and Don (Coleen) Blair and their children; her brother Gilbert (Doris) Heatherington and their family Diane (Dwight) Dehne, Gayle Heatherington (Gordon Johnson), Allan (Barb) Heatherington, Blair (Kim) Heatherington, Dale (Shaunna) Huston, and their families.
Violet was a unique and special person and we all have many fond memories of her. She will always have a special place in our hearts and will be missed by all.
