Dorothy Edith McDonald
July 10, 1931 - June 5, 2013
Dorothy Edith McDonald, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the age of 81 years.
Dorothy was born in Forestburg, Alberta, to Joseph and Edith Haupt on July 10, 1931. Dorothy was a strong and independent woman and among her adventures she traveled north for work. In 1952 she married Colin McDonald in Yellowknife NWT, and that is where her sons Rod and Jack were born. Leaving Yellowknife to return closer to her home, Dorothy and family settled in Heisler, Alberta, where they owned and operated the Heisler Hotel, and where their youngest son Sandy was born. In 1967 the family returned to Colin’s home, in the Grande Prairie area, and is where Dorothy resided until her passing.
Dorothy worked her career as a bookkeeper for a variety of local businesses. She was creative and had a passion for crafts, with her Faberge-style eggs recently on display in the Grande Prairie museum. Dorothy was a great teacher, and researcher, and her work as the family historian will be treasured forever. Her patience and willingness to get down on the ground and play with her grandchildren is something they will remember forever.
She will be fondly remembered by her sons: Rod (Bernice) of Grande Prairie, Jack (Cheryl) of Dawson Creek, and Sandy (Luana) of Grande Prairie; her younger brother Stan Haupt of Kelowna; and her grandchildren: Nyana Kerr, Jeremy McDonald, Nikki McDonald, Alex McDonald, and Olivia McDonald; great-grandchildren Nathan Kerr, Dietta Foster, and Daryol Foster, and 13 great great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews.
She was predeceased by both parents, her husband Colin McDonald, and her daughter in-law Lynda McDonald.
At Dorothy’s request, no service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a cancer related charity of one’s choice.
