Albert Edward Hutton
July 1, 1916 - December 19, 2003
A ten year old boy was failing math. His parents tried everything to get him to do well in school, but nothing worked. Finally, they enrolled him in a private school. From his first day, the boy spent every night poring over books. When his first report card came, he had received an A in math. "Son, " his father asked, "what made the difference in math class - The nuns - Or the textbooks?
"Dad, I had never taken math seriously before, " the boy admitted. "But when I walked in and saw that guy nailed to the plus sign, I knew this place meant business!"
Albert was born July 1, 1916 in Hanna, Alberta to Al and Marjorie Hutton. He was raised on a farm five miles N.W. of Hanna, which today is still in the Hutton family, as Doug lives there today. As a young boy, Grandpa had to work hard, doing chores before and after school. Grandpa attended St. George’s school, a one-room school with approximately 30 children, all from grades 1-10. To get to and from school, he rode horseback two miles in all kinds of weather. As high school approached, Albert completed his schooling in the Hanna High School, which his great-grandchildren attend today!
Albert took on farming and he ran the family farm while his father Al started selling Minneapolis Farm Equipment. Of course, there was time for some play. Grandpa filled his free time playing baseball, hockey, going to choir practices and attending Friday night dances. It was at one of these dances that he caught the eye of a beautiful young woman.
On December 8th, 1940, Albert married Doris Dahl and they were together for 62 wonderful years. Albert and Doris stayed living on the original Hutton family farm for six years after they were married, while Al and Dot moved to Hanna to operate AA Hutton and Sons. In 1948, Albert and Doris purchased the former McCuish land by Watts, which is now owned by grandson, Harley. It was more convenient for their sons to get to school, as the bus travelled past their door. They were blessed with two sons, Leslie, born in 1941 and Barry, born in 1945.
Albert started taking an interest in community and political issues. He became the President of the Telephone Co. In 1950, the power was installed and Albert became a member of the Rural Electrification Board. He worked on the implementation of the Grid Road System for the Special Areas and later became a councillor on the Special Areas Board. Farming was always Albert’s passion and he became a Delegate for the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA), as well as, the United Grain Growers (UGG). Grandpa was a long time and past master of the Masonic Lodge. We, his grandchildren, always thought he was going to some sacred meeting place, you know like on the Flintstones and asked him many, many, times where his water-buffalo hat was, it was always good for a knee-slapper. He was still an active member until his passing. Albert enjoyed playing cards and curling. Whist, crib and 500 were some of his favourite card games. Curling was a sport that he did weekly up until a few years ago. He even was fortunate enough to get an eight ender once.
Grandpa loved music and he loved to dance! Albert and Doris could be seen all over the country in their younger days, attending every country dance available. They danced their way right into Hollywood, as they landed a part in the film, "Why Shoot the Teacher." They were members of the Hanna Square Dancing Club. In the past few years Grandpa discovered the new age of CDs and we sometimes thought he was spending his entire pension on music. We have selected a few songs today that you have been listening too.
Retirement age of 80 found Albert moving to a new home in Hanna. He remained very active in the Senior Circle, hosting whist, playing crib and reciting poetry.
Some of my fondest memories of my Grandpa are that he loved all of his grandchildren unconditionally. He was there to teach us how to drive at age 10 and he didn’t seem to get to mad when one or two of us met up with a grainary or a fence post, he just fixed the damage. He taught us how to manage our money, as he started up Wolf Creek Cattle Co., which consisted of Albert and his four grandchildren. He taught his three grandsons the art of farming, the good and the bad. We were always his first priority. I think of how fortunate the four of us were, we all saw each other every day until the day we left home. Our grandparents were our friends, our confidants, and our stability.
On February 22, 2003, Albert lost his beloved Doris and his heart was broken. The days became long and lonely. He was insistent that he could manage to remain living on his own and he did with great determination. His health started to deteriorate about a month ago and he had to be admitted to hospital on Tuesday, December 16th. Grandpa spent all day Thursday, telling jokes to Roy and Lloyd and teasing his great-grandchildren by tickling them and high-fiving them. Friday morning he seemed to be very tired and at supper time he ate his supper, closed his eyes and went to dance with Grandma. His family was by his side.
Albert was predeceased by his loving wife Doris, his parents, Al and Marjorie Hutton, his in-laws Annie and Martin Dahl, brothers-in-law, James Dahl and Harold Veno, sister-in-law, Mildred Veno and nephew Greg Veno.
Albert is survived by his loving family: sons, Leslie and his wife Linda of Hanna, Barry and his friend Darlene of Vauxhaul, his four grandchildren, Cheryl and Robbie Stevenson of Hanna, Gordon and Sharmon Hutton of Hanna, Harley and Leianne Hutton of Hanna, and Keith and Leslie Hutton of Hanna, his eight great-grandchildren, whom will miss him dearly, Dalyn, Shane and Kirby Stevenson, Jeffery, Brandon, Walker, Reegan and Tyler Hutton. Albert is also survived by daughter-in-law, Diane Samborski, of Hanna, two brothers, Roy and Jeanne Hutton of Hanna, and Lloyd and Wanda Hutton of Hanna, sister-in-law, Freida Dahl of Hanna, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Donations in memory of Albert Hutton can be made to Stars or to the First United Church, Hanna. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
