George Allen, of Hanna
Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. John 11:26
George Allen passed away in Hanna on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the age of 86. He was born in Craigmyle on January 9, 1920, the second child of David Charles and Jo Anna Allen. George took his public schooling in Surprise School and then took up farming with his Dad. He joined the Delia Militia in 1940 and spent time in the Sarcee Training Camp. In 1948 he received his pilot’s licence from the Chinook Flying Service in Calgary and became a member of the National Flying Farmers Association from 1950 – 1965. George bought a small two passenger Champ and enjoyed flying around the country – dropping chocolate bars to the neighbour’s children, delivering baby chicks and taking people to the hospital. When he got his plane his Dad said " I never thought I’d see a thing like this around here." George helped organize the Starland Seed Cleaning Plant and was President for 15 years. He was President of the Craigmyle Red Cross Society and canvassed the area for 60 years. In 2003 he received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for his many years of service. George’s interests included playing the accordion, curling, playing chess and photography. He was a country man. He loved hearing the coyotes howl, the trains on the tracks, and the ducks and geese as they came back in the spring. He believed in the Christian faith and the risen Christ and is now home with the Lord. George was predeceased by his father David Charles, his mother Jo Anna Allen and one brother Richard William Allen. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Lily; son Richard; two sisters Kathleen (Howard) Paddock of Calgary and Joan Skoyan of Calgary, and one brother Ted (Kate) Allen as well as many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at Craigmyle United Church, Craigmyle, Alberta on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 2:00 pm. If desired, donations in George’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta & NWT or to the Canadian Red Cross Society.
