Raymond Lawrence Stitsen
August 31, 1946 - September 23, 2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father and papa, Raymond Lawrence Stitsen. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 23, 2012.
Ray was born August 31, 1946 and was raised in the small farming community of Busby, Alberta. He was the second of five children born to Charlie and Mary Stitsen. He has one older brother John, a younger brother Tony (Claire), and two younger sisters: Rosemary (Jerry) and Elizabeth (Al). He also has one sister in-law Linda (David). Dad loved his early life on the farm, especially being with his siblings. He loved being an Uncle to his numerous nieces and nephews. He had a wonderful extended family, with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
After graduating high school Ray began a long career at the Royal Bank of Canada. His first job was in Morinville, and included stops in Fort McMurray, Cardston, Bassano, Blairmore, Grande Prairie, Slave Lake, back to Morinville, Edmonton, Calgary, High River, Bellevue, Swan Hills, Spirit River, Peace River, Leduc, then back to Grande Prairie in 1996 until his retirement. Ray left his mark on every community he lived in, often volunteering for countless clubs and organizations – everything from school board to service clubs. Ray also ran for the Liberal party in two provincial elections. Shortly before retirement from the bank, Ray was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He began cancer treatment shortly thereafter. At the same time, he began studies to become a Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church. He travelled to Calgary every month for three years for training, before being ordained in 2004.
Ray loved being a Deacon. He loved his parishioners with all his heart. He loved being able to share in their joyous occasions such as weddings and baptisms, and treasured the times he could serve people who were dealing with difficult circumstances. He especially loved his work with children, whether it was at school, the church, or summer youth camps. He loved the little kids, and they loved him.
Ray was a good man. He was a loyal and faithful husband. He was a wonderful role model to his children. He was the best Papa to Phoebe, Christopher and Rebecca. He was a good son, brother, uncle, son in-law and father in-law. He loved his family unconditionally. He was always there to help a friend in need. He was the ultimate giver, and never liked being a taker.
Prayer service will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He will be buried at the Emerson Trail cemetery.
The right of Christian burial will be held on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
In lieu of flowers, and donations to a charity, we ask that you give thanks to God, hug your children, and tell the people in your life that you love them. If you need to give anything, give your time. Give it to someone less fortunate than you are. Give it to making your community a better place.
With thanks and love: Jean, Michael, Tracy, Kevin, Pheobe, Christopher, Rebecca, Nancy and Len.

Victor Arthur Metzger, of Craigmyle
Victor Arthur Metzger was born on September 19, 1931 near Carbon, Alberta to Karl and Emily Metzger. He was the second youngest in a family of six. Vic’s family moved to the Craigmyle area in 1940 where Vic spent the rest of his childhood.
Vic worked in several places which included trucking lumber and working for the railroad. In 1962, he moved to his father’s home place and purchased an additional half section. This began his 40-year passion for farming which just ended a couple of years ago when Vic sold his land.
Vic enjoyed many sports and he especially loved baseball. He often said if the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos ever made it to the World Series, he would be on the first plane down east to watch.
Vic’s highlight of the past few years has definitely been his grandchildren. Grandpa Vic would drive in the yard and the kids would rush past him out to the truck as they knew there would be a box of Smarties waiting for them. Vic was always proud of his grandchildren’s accomplishments and cherished the time he was able to spend with them.
Vic passed away on August 9, 2003 at the Hanna Hospital after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his children Carmen and her husband Percy of Amisk and their children Jeff (14) and Mark (11); and Dale and his wife Shannon of Breten and their children Amanda (15) and Cody (14). He is also survived by his sister, Edna Raugust of Calgary and his brother Melvin Metzger and his wife Violet of Hanna, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
