March 22, 1931 - October 13, 2009
Elizabeth Catherine was born May 22, 1931 in Sibbald, Alberta to Edward & Pearl Dardis. Known as Betty, she was the oldest of 5 children, with 3 brothers, Jim, Bill and Jack and one sister June. The children lost their mother to complications from an operation when Betty was 12 and their father was left with a farm to run and 5 children. From there the girls went to the O'Connel Institute and the boys to St. Mary's Convent. Betty's faith remained a large part of her life.
Betty graduated and went to work at CIBC on Jasper Avenue in Edmonton and boarded at the home of Dorothy and Archie Dick. It was there that Betty met Keith, Dorothy's youngest brother and they were married February 20th, 1954.
After they were married Betty and Keith moved out to the Williams farm in Ministik. For the first couple of years they lived with Keith's mother in the old family log house until they bought the farm from her and she moved into Edmonton. A house was moved on from the Deville area. And the new home came with bats. Betty hated bats but over the years she became a deadly shot with a racket. The house was heated by a coal furnace and more than once she came down in the morning to find her kitchen covered in black soot from the furnace backfiring after an unsuccessful banking for the night. Some days Keith wasn't very popular. The house initially needed a lot of work, but it was home and Betty lived there until she passed on. A daughter Marie arrived in 1956 and after that 2 sons, David and Kevin.
Life on the farm was busy for Betty. Over the years she became a very good cook and there were usually a few extra mouths to feed. The door was always open and folks dropping by for coffee were always welcome. They had sheep, chickens and cattle and always a big garden, berries to pick and chores to be done. Betty loved her Saskatoons. One of her favourite times of year was calving time. Each animal was a pet and she worried each delivery. Keith worked for Ducks Unlimited and was often away working so more than once she called upon helpful neighbours to assist.
Betty's brothers in the early years of her marriage worked on the rigs and they would come to stay when they had down time. And they would help. More than once the good intentioned help would go awry - a testament to Keith's patience. Over the years there is quite a collection of stories that continue to be shared with many a laugh.
Betty loved living in Ministik. She was a member of the Community League and was also a long time member of the Ministik Ladies Club. She was very proud of the Pride of Strathcona Award that the club received and she could always be counted on to adjourn the meetings so the coffee could be served. Community with visiting, dances, parties and picnics was a great part of her and Keith's life. And she was fortunate to have enjoyed so many life time friends.
Betty lost Keith in 2003 but continued living on at the farm working with her daughter and son-in-law until she passed away peacefully in Tofield Hospital October 13, 2009 at the age of 78 years.
She is predeceased by her husband Keith, brother Bill and grandson Brandon.
