SIKSTROM, ELSIE
Elsie Sikstrom - our loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister and Aunt of Camrose, Alberta passed away peacefully January 17, 2009 at the age of 79 years. Elsie’s life began in the bare hills of south-eastern Alberta near Acadia Valley during the depression years.
Amid the challenges of harsh economics and climate, this young pioneer family established lifelong bonds of love and devotion. In 1944, they moved north to the Edberg area and settled into what became known simply as “the farm”. It was here four years later that Mom met and married Glenn Sikstrom, on March 24, 1948 in Camrose. Mom always had a soft spot for ‘calla lilies’; they were the fl owers in her wedding bouquet and many anniversaries thereafter.
Glenn and Elsie moved from Edberg to Stettler in 1951 shortly after their fi rst son was born.
The family grew to include Grant, then Dan and Brian, and finally their little blonde princess, Nancy. In 1965 the family moved to Glendon, Alberta where Dad and Harold Carter operated a farm machinery business. The legacy of the Glendon years was her first two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Debbie.
Mom and Dad returned to Camrose in 1972 so glad to be closer to family and friends. The next season brought weddings and the addition of Ruth, Debbie, Teri and her favourite son-in-law, Gary to the family circle. Of course, each new grandchild added great delight for Grannie and Grampa. Their home was a gathering place for many family celebrations.
In 1982 tragedy took the life of her 3 year old grandson, Tyler, leaving an irreparable pain in Mom’s heart. Her support for Brian and Teri during those difficult years will never be forgotten.
After 45 years of marriage, Mom’s partner and best friend, our Dad, passed away in 1994.
Without him at her side, she never stood quite as tall or strong as we had known her. As much as she was able, Mom made special effort to visit and attend family celebrations, including the annual fishing trips to the Blood Indian. In 2000, Mom suffered a stroke requiring a move to Deer Meadows. Though her spirit remained strong, other health issues gradually took their toll. Her lack of mobility required a move to Bethany Meadows in 2007, where she resided until her passing.
Mom’s #1 love was her family! Her other joys included cooking, camping and fishing, gardening and the outdoors. She was a faithful wife, devoted mother, and a hard worker.
She will be dearly missed by her children, Grant (Debbie) Sikstrom of Calgary, Dan (Ruth) Sikstrom of Red Deer, Brian (Teri) Sikstrom and Nancy (Gary) Hayworth both of Camrose.
Also left to cherish warm memories of their Grandmother and Great-Grandmother are Kelly (Coralie) Sikstrom, Kory (Erin) Sikstrom & daughter Rachel, Klynt (SueElla) Sikstrom & children Keenan & Kayla, Carly Sikstrom & children Madison and Dylann, Tyson (Karry) Sikstrom & children Dorien and Kiana, Taryn Sikstrom, Shawna Hayworth & Devin Bonnar and their children Presley, Mare and Jessalynn, and Cody Hayworth & Jen Flemming.
She is survived by her sisters Selma (Harold) Carter, Lillian (Roy) Cunningham, her brother Irvin (Pat) Frank and numerous nieces and nephews. Elsie is pre-deceased by her loving husband Glenn, grandson Tyler, sister Agnes Sikstrom, and her parents Adolf & Irma Frank.
Funeral services was held on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter offi ciating. Interment followed in the Camrose Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
