Elwood Thurbide of Red Deer beloved husband of Isabelle Thurbide, passed away suddenly as a result of a heart attack, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Center, Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at the age of 67 years.
Elwood was born at Florence in Cape Breton County, N.S., on Oct. 10, 1933.
He has lived and worked in Brandon, Man. and eventually moved to Red Deer where he worked at the Michener Center. In 1962 he met his wife at a Christmas dance and they were married Aug. 25, 1964. Elwood was a loving and devoted husband who took care of his wife Isabelle during her illness.
Besides his loving wife, Isabelle, he is survived by his brothers Mansell (Ann), Florence, N.S., Weldie, Napanee, Ont.; sisters, Lorna (Ken) Thompson, Burlington, Ont., Elva (Bob) Thomson, Waterdown, Ont., Karen (Jerry) Marcoux, Hamilton, Ont.; brother-in-law, Richard Danesik, Vegreville; numerous nieces, nephews and friends as well as his church family at the Word of Life Center.
He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Ivy and brother, Glen.
Gregory Lee Vaillancourt
52, Calagry Alberta
Gregory Lee Vaillancourt, 52, of Calgary, Alta., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, as the result of a bicycle accident in Calgary. He was formerly of Sydney Mines.
Born in Saint Thomas, Ont., Greg is the son of Grace (MacDowell) and the late Jules Vaillancourt.
He was a member of Clyde Avenue Baptist Church, Sydney Mines. Greg at one time was owner and operator of Northside Handyman Services.
Greg will forever be remembered and loved by Barbara; his sons, Luke, North Sydney, Geoff and Josh, both at home; a brother, John (Sheila), Wolfville; a nephew, Steven and a niece, Anna. Greg will also be missed by his many friends.
The remains will be resting at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
The wake will take place Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Funeral will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Clyde Avenue Baptist Church, Sydney Mines with the Rev. Allison MacLean officiating.
Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Emily Catherine McCaw
82, Red Deer, Alberta
Emily Catherine McCaw (nee LeBlanc) of Red Deer, beloved wife of the late James (Jim) McCaw passed away suddenly at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at the age of 82 years.
She is the loving mother of Joanne (Brian) Stewart and their children Melissa, Briana, and Justin, all of Kelowna, B.C., Kevin (Sara) McCaw and their children James and Mark McCaw, Glendale, Ariz. She is also survived by sisters, Kay, Mary, Sissy and brother, John.
She was predeceased by her husband on Jan. 31, 1995, and two brothers, Gilbert and Jimmy.
Funeral services will be held at the 67th Street Chapel of the Red Deer Funeral Home, 6150-67th St., Red Deer, Friday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Brian Derksen.

John William Nearing
73, Glace Bay, N.S. / Alberta
John William Nearing, 73, of 141 Douglas Ave., passed away on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Matilda (Milley) Nearing.
Johnnie was a miner employed by Devco for 37 years until his retirement in 1987. Johnnie was an avid skater and hockey fan who attended every game at Centre 200.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Lyons); sons, John and Kevin, both of Glace Bay; brothers, George (Betty), Joseph Jr. (Kay), James (Marie), Wayne (Josephine), all of Glace Bay, Kevin (Marilyn), Milford Station and Frankie, British Columbia; sisters, Florence Chiasson, Edmonton, twins Paula (Mrs. Harvey MacDonald), Coxheath, Pauline (Mrs. Barry MacMillan), Ontario, Eva Martin, Ontario, Tillie, Glace Bay and Cory (Mrs. Daniel Hiscott), Glace Bay and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Bridget and Mary and his brother, Thomas.
Family will receive friends and relatives at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church, McKays Corner with Fr. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Russell (Fabian) Chiasson
36, Calgary
Fabian Chiasson, 36, of Calgary, formerly from Sydney, passed away suddenly at his home in Calgary on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000.
He was born in Glace Bay, and was the eldest son of Russell Chaisson (Marcie), Reserve Mines, and Bernadette (White) MacNeil (Charles), Sydney.
As a child, he attended St. John’s Parish in Glace Bay.
Fabian worked in the construction business for the past number of years as an installer of windows in skyscraper buildings in Calgary. Woodworking, ceramic painting, playing pool and writing poetry were some of his hobbies. He also enjoyed outdoor activities and had a great appreciation for nature.
Fabian is survived by his wife, Stacey (Harvey), Calgary, formerly of Bridgewater; two daughters, Christina and Sophia, both of Sydney; one sister, Cindy Youden (Ronnie), two brothers, Wayne and Ian, all of Sydney. He is also survived by his grandmothers, Loretta Chiasson, Reserve Mines, and Mrs. Frances LeBlanc, Glace Bay; nieces, Whitney, Candace, Brianna; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a close friend, Leo MacKinnon.
He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Joseph Chiasson and John LeBlanc, an uncle, Simon Chiasson and a cousin, Bradley Murray.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George Street, Sydney, Friday, Oct. 6 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Sydney River at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made in Fabian’s memory to a charity of choice.
Allan (Butch) MacDonald
Calgary, Alta.
Allan (Butch) MacDonald of Calgary, Alta., passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000.
Allan was born in North Sydney, N.S., Jan. 23, 1932.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jessie (MacKinnon) MacDonald; his children, Mark, Mike and Heather and his dog, Ming.
His kindness, sense of humour and generosity toward others will always be remembered.
