George Stephen MacDonnell, formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alta., on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001.
Born in Sydney, on Dec. 26, 1915, he was the eldest son of the late Samuel and Charlotte (Burgey) MacDonnell.
George grew up in Sydney and at Ballantynes Cove, Antigonish County, N.S. He served overseas in northwest Europe during the Second World War with the 3rd Medium Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery.
He was employed at Sydney Steel until his retirement in 1979.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Olive MacLeod, New Campbellton; two brothers, James and Leonard and by a special aunt, Violet Roberts.
George is survived by two sons, Fraser and Stephen (Jane) and by a granddaughter, Heather, Calgary. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Chisholm, Mrs. Violet MacLean and Mrs. Eileen McNeil, all of Sydney.
George was a member of Branch 285, Royal Canadian Legion and St. Gerard’s Parish, Calgary.
Following a family service in Calgary, the body will rest at the Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney, Friday, Feb. 23 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Cabot Street, Sydney, at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, with Rev. Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
Richard (Dick) Frederick McKay
60, Beaverlodge, Alta
On Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, Dick McKay, passed away in the Beaverlodge Municipal Hospital, at the age of 60 years.
Dick was born Feb. 24, 1940 at Grand Prairie, Alta. He was the son of Lillie and the late Bob McKay.
Dick spent several years in the RCAF and was stationed at Gander, Nfld., Sydney, N.S., Stoney Mountain, Alta., and Comox, B.C.
Following retirement from the service, he and his family lived in Fort St. John, B.C. and Fort Nelson, B.C., where he owned and operated a barbering business. The family returned to Dick’s hometown, Beaverlodge, where Dick was involved in the oilfield trucking business.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Theresa (Aboud); daughter, Valerie (Rick) O’Dell and three grandchildren, Jade, Kaila and Tanner O’Dell; son, Allan (Teryl). He is also survived by brothers, Ken (Shirley) and their children, Martin, Kent, Kena and families.
He was a truly special son, husband, father and grandfather. He was very much loved and will be greatly missed by his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and by all his many friends.
Dick enjoyed the love and friendship of his extended family, the Abouds and the Robertsons. He particularly loved the fun and times spent at the family summer home in Irish Vale, Cape Breton.
He will be remembered for his great sense of humour.
Visitation was held at Oliver’s Funeral Home, Grand Prairie, Alta. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Beaverlodge, Alta.

Pauline May Graham (nee Schaller)

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Polly Graham on Thursday, March 15, 2001.
Memories of her will be cherished by her son, Rob Graham (Louise LeFebvre), Toronto, Ont.; daughters, Sue (Marty) Lashmore, Vancouver, B.C., Mary Jane Graham, Edmonton; one granddaughter, Polly May ‘Petite Polly’, Vancouver, B.C.
She will also be remembered by her sisters, Dr. Marie Pittard, Olga, (Sydney) Morrell; brothers, Jonny (Yvonne), Roddy (Sharon) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our special thanks to all the staff of the respiratory outreach program and the staff of the Intensive Care Unit 3C4 at the University of Alberta Hospital for their excellent care of Polly and kindness to us all.
A memorial service was held Monday, March 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Foster & McGarvey Funeral Chapel, 10008-103 St., Rev. Sharon Irving officiated.

Gary Murphy
45, Edmonton, Alberta
Gary Murphy, 45, formerly of Norwood Avenue, Sydney, passed away on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at the Royal Alexander Hospital, Edmonton, Alta.
He was a son of the late Frank and Marcella (Foley) Murphy.
He is survived by his brothers, Gerard, Toronto, John (Sally), Sydney; his sisters, Dorena Donovan, Toronto, Bridget Ann Boutilier (Harold), Sheet Harbour; his stepfamily, Madonna Hamm (Garnet), Calgary, Betty Lou White, Elmsdale, Aileen Goduto (Dominic), Sydney and Richard White (Jean), Sydney.
He was predeceased by his mother, Marcella in 1970 and his father, Frank in 1996, his stepmother, Thelma in 1998 and a brother, Tom in 1975.
Gary’s love was caring for horses. He worked steadily in Calgary, Edmonton, and many race tracks throughout the United States.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Donald (Don) Stephen Head
47, Calgary
Donald (Don) Stephen Head passed away peacefully on Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Agape Hospice in Calgary, Alta., at the age of 47 years.
Don is survived by his children, Lyndsay and Jordan and their mother, Sue Ducharme of Calgary. Also surviving Don is his mother, Mrs. Beatrice Head, New Waterford, N.S.; twin brother, Joseph (Brenda), Sackville, N.S., Jackie (Lorraine), River Ryan, N.S.; Robert (Mary), London, Ont.; David, London, Ont.; Mickey (Linda), Glace Bay, N.S.; and Doreen (Paul) Leblanc, London, Ont.; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Don was predeceased by his father, John, and brother, Donald Joseph.
Don graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Glace Bay, N.S., and moved to Calgary in 1973. He worked at Inland Construction (Standard General) from 1979 until he could no longer work.
He will be especially missed by friends, Brenda Basaraba, Sandy Conti and Gerry Hart.

A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held at the Calgary Crematorium Chapel, 3219 - 4th Street, N.W. (within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery), Calgary, Alta. on Friday, April 13th, 2001 at 2 p.m. where friends and family will gather to say their final farewell. Also a memorial service will be held at a later date in Glace Bay, N.S., where family will bring Don home to his final resting place, beside his father and brother.
