SHANER -- Rose Shaner, born North Dakota, October 28, 1905; died Calgary, November 5, 1997. Rose was one of six children of a pioneer family who settled Western Canada. She remembers, as a child of four, arriving in Canada from the U.S. by railroad. Her father Andrew Willy, held her hand and walked with his family across the border to a new country and a new promise and future. The family settled in Blaine Lake for a short while before relocating to St. Walburg. They arrived there before the railroad and established the first general store in the area. That trip was made with a team of oxen. As the eldest child, Rose was taken out of school after completing grade eight to work at the family store. She loved school and cried about not being able to continue. Her education did go on at the store where she learned something of business and even bartered furs and learned some Cree. Rose worked in Vancouver and Calgary before moving to Swift Current where she married a farmer Cort Shaner in 1936. They were each other's best friends. She loved gardening, cooking, entertaining friends and especially sport fishing. She spent a huge amount of time caring for her mother and sister who both suffered through very difficult diseases. She was a regular volunteer at nursing homes in Swift Current. She had a sense of humor that lasted to the end even though her last few months were also very difficult. Rose was rewarded with her first great-granddaughter Alacia in August. In our minds she established her own eternal itinerary in waiting for this birth. She is survived by her loving granddaughters, Susan Cortes and Karan Shaner; and son-in-law Luis Cortes and Arnold Enge. She also is survived by her son Jim Shaner and his wife Kelda; as well as a brother Raymond Willy; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Cort Shaner in 1982. The family would like to thank the excellent care-givers at the Forest Grove Care Centre who made her life as comfortable as possible over the last few months and to the Trinity Lodge and their excellent staff who provided wonderful service over the last four years. A special thanks to Dr. Len Aldridge who provided the counseling and medical care that gave Rose quality at the end of her life. If friends so desire, a memorial tribute may be made to Osteoporosis Society of Alberta, 1020, 910 - 7 Avenue, S.W., Calgary, AB T2P 3N8, or Rotary Foundation - Canada, P.O. Box 34254 RPO Westbrooke, Calgary, AB T3C 9Z9. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 1997 at 3:00 p.m. at MEMORIES FUNERAL CHAPEL, Calgary. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 15, 1997 at 9:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
