SWABB, Derek
March 21, 1995 — September 21, 2011
With broken hearts and strong faith we announce the passing of our precious Derek at the tender age of 16. Derek made the absolute best of the short time he was granted, but could no longer fight the cancer that ravaged his body for over four years. He passed peacefully at home with his parents by his side.
Derek was a great athlete, excelling in many sports including hockey, golf, baseball, volleyball, and ball hockey. He was a truly gifted child to be able to handle the effects of cancer without complaint, making the absolute best of a bad situation by simply accepting and adapting to the numerous challenges that he faced. He was an inspiration to all that knew him and he taught us to enjoy life, persevere, and appreciate the good times.
Derek will always be fondly remembered, cherished, and deeply missed by his parents Byron and Darlene, and brother Ty; Baba Emily Lucyk and Papa Frank Swabb. He will be joining Grandma Adeline Swabb who recently passed on August 17, as well as Gege Max Lucyk who joined Derek on his path to heaven on September 22. Derek will also be missed by six aunties, five uncles, nine cousins, Godparents Melanie Swabb and Clayton Radzick. Derek’s friends and teammates, along with his dog Manny were a strong source of strength and support throughout his illness.
Thanks to all the staff and students at JJ Bowlen and Archbishop O’Leary for the constant kindness and compassion.
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the wonderful care and support of the staff at the Stollery, Glenrose and Homecare. If you wish to make a donation to the organizations that helped Derek throughout his illness, please consider the Stollery Children’s Hospital or the Glenrose.
Most importantly, to everyone who offered their prayers, we are forever grateful. This gave Derek the will to carry on and us the strength to care for him at home until his final hour.
We welcome all friends and family to join us in our final farewell and celebration of Derek’s life on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at St. John Bosco Parish, 13503 — 40 Street. Viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., and interment to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
