Clarice was predeceased by her parents, Chester and Mary Forre, nephew James Forre and her life partner John "Jack" Gallant. Clarice is survived by her son Jim and his wife Dorothy Ainley of Calgary. ARNASON -- Colleen (nee Dobslaw), passed away peacefully at the Agape Manor on January 30, 1998 after a courageous battle with cancer. ATKINSON -- Arthur Thomas Atkinson, beloved husband of Janet (Jennie) passed away peacefully at his home in Calgary on January 29, 1998 at the age of 76 years. Besides his loving wife, Arthur will be lovingly remembered and missed by his daughter Lynn (Rick) Walker; son Dennis (Debbie) Atkinson; four granddaughters, Janet Atkinson, Kim, Stephanie and Dana Walker. Also survived by sisters, Jean (Lew) Callaghan, Pearl (Tom) Aquiline; two brothers, Brian and Ronnie; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Jack (Freda) Hamilton; and sister-in-law Nicki (Walter) Hudson. Arthur was a native Calgarian and lived here all his life. He was employed by Canadian Western Natural Gas for thirty-five years and retired in 1980. He enjoyed many years trailering. One of his greatest joys in life was his grandchildren. Arthur will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. BETTERIDGE -- Shirley Louise Betteridge, beloved wife of Robert (Bob) Betteridge, passed away peacefully at the AGAPE Hospice, February 1, 1998 at the age of 54 years after a heroic battle with a brain tumour. Besides her loving husband Robert, she is survived by her daughter Heather; son Mike; her mother Cleo Budd; brothers, Ron (Ellen), Rick (Joyce); and many other relatives and friends. Born in Belleville, Ontario, Shirley moved to Calgary with her family and attended St. John's Elementary and St. Mary's Senior High Schools. Shirley was a dedicated wife, wonderful mother and fantastic friend. She was very courageous, inspirational and had a profound effect on everyone she met in and around the Tom Baker and Foothills Hospitals and in her time spent in Red Deer, St. Albert, High Level, Rainbow Lake and Fort McMurray. DEERING -- (Krauss) Martha Deering, aged 88 years, of Claresholm, Alberta, passed away January 30, 1998. Widow of the late Gordon Deering; and beloved mother and mother-in-law of Agnes and Dana Fancy, Stavely, AB, Larry Deering, Lethbridge, AB, Harvey and Vesper Deering, Claresholm, AB, Phyliss and Arnold Norby, Claresholm, AB, Ruby Anderson, Calgary, AB, Lenora and Ken Jackson, Fort St. John, BC. She is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, five brothers, and three sisters. Mrs. Deering was predeceased by her parents, the late William and Madeline Krauss, husband Gordon 1985, son Ray 1978, son-in-law Dick Anderson 1993, grandson Marty Fancy 1966, also by brothers and sisters. Born at Norton, AB, on October 17, 1909. She married Gordon in 1928 and lived in the Medicine Hat area. She and her late husband resided in Red Deer from 1947 to 1949 where they had a farm and in 1950 moved East of Claresholm where they farmed until retiring to Claresholm in 1968. Martha was a member of the Starline Ladies Club and the Sunshine Club. EVANS -- Jack (John Stanley) Evans, born June 7, 1916 at Beddington, Alberta, died January 31, 1998 in Calgary at the Peter Lougheed Hospital. Jack is survived by his loving wife Doris; two sons, Harold (Lynn) of Carstairs, Donald (Trudy) of Balzac; three daughters, Joyce of Brooks, Hazel of Acme, Linda of Airdrie; two grandsons, Keith (Marie), Greg; and six granddaughters, Laura (Robert), Heather, Penny, Brandy, Stephanie and Chantal. Jack was predeceased by his eldest son Kenneth in 1949, his parents, Bill and Adelaide Evans, three brothers, Joe, Buster and Doug. He is survived by three sisters, Mae Will, Winnie Griffith and June Nixon, all of Calgary. Jack lived and farmed all his life in the Beddington area until his health failed and he went to the Airdrie Bethany Care Centre in 1994. FARNEY -- Clara B. Farney (nee Vansickle), beloved wife of Harold Farney of Calgary, passed away at home on January 30, 1998 very suddenly at the age of 88 years. Clara was born March 9, 1909 in Stafford, Kansas, the second child of ten children of Arthur and Flossie Vansickle. Clara married Harold on May 31, 1931 and together they followed the oil exploration industry throughout the Central and Southern United States, finally settling in Calgary in September of 1947. Clara was very active in social clubs, a terrific cook, homemaker and a gracious hostess. After raising her family, she took great pleasure in playing the game of golf. Besides her loving husband, Clara is survived by one son Don and daughter-in-law Donna of Calgary; two grandchildren, Rhonda Lee and Greg; a step-granddaughter Darcie; and two great-grandchildren, Fallon and Katie, all of Calgary; six sisters, Ruby (Bobbi), Lorraine, Angie, Mabel, June and Mary. GUTHRIE -- Mr. John (Jack) Guthrie passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his loving family on January 29, 1998, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jack is survived by his faithful and loving companion Vera; daughters, Phyllis, Gwenne and Beverley Guthrie; and three grandchildren, Joan, Jevon and Dante (J.J.), all of Calgary. Jack was born in Edmonton, Alberta, May 30, 1930 and was raised in St. Paul, Alberta where he completed his schooling. He later attended the University of Alberta. As a young man, he entered the oil and gas industry, having worked for Velocity Surveyors, General Geophysical and Petty-Ray Geophysical. He then went on to form his own company, Sourcex Geophysical, with partner Mickey Strembitsky and later Noramex Resources. Jack spent much time enjoying his hobby collecting and restoring military vehicles and was a member of the Royal Alberta United Services Institute (R.A.U.S.I.). He had a terrific sense of humour and had fun performing his "Magic Tricks" for young and old alike. In his time of illness, his upbeat personality and graciousness shone through. He will be sadly missed by all those he touched, with his caring, thoughtful and humanitarian character. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Marion and William Dyce Guthrie, brother George and son John. HILDENBRAND -- Joanne Frances, passed away peacefully at home on January 30, 1998, after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her beloved husband Fred; and her three daughters and six grandchildren, Ann Mallory (Dave) and Lisa, Leanne, Christine and Charlie; Susan Trafford (Randy) and Stuart; and Camille Sojer (David) and Stacey. She is also survived by her brother Al Angstman of Houston, Texas; her sister Dorothy Peete of Billings, Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joanne was born in Helena, Montana, on September 19, 1930. She graduated from the University of Montana in business and worked in Montana and New Mexico as a secretary and land-woman. She married Fred on July 18, 1959, and spent the rest of her life in Calgary where she was active in many volunteer capacities including the Junior League, Bel-Aire Community Association, W. Roper Hull Home, church committees and various arts and charitable organizations. She lived her life with an ever-positive outlook, a warm smile, vivacious enthusiasm and a love of life that touched all who knew her. She was a selfless wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who leaves a huge legacy. HOSZOUSKI -- Mary Louise Hoszouski (nee Evans) went to be with her Lord and Saviour on January 29, 1998 at the age of 84 years. Mary was born in Sandy Lake, Manitoba, of hardy pioneer stock. Her family homesteaded near Youngstown, Alberta. Reading and correspondence with friends and relatives was her passion. A lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene, she served the Calgary, 17 Avenue Church in various capacities until its closure. During her retirement years, she was active in the Bow Cliff Seniors, touring and singing with the Sing-A-Longs, Senior Choral Group. Mary is survived by two daughters, Marge Kessler of Calgary, Irene and husband Art Finkenbinder of Brackettville, Texas; a son Truman and Sharon of Calgary; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and husband John of Vulcan. Mary was predeceased by a son-in-law Gerry Kessler, a sister Bessie Armstrong and brothers, Jack, Wallace and Jim Armstrong.
