Hughes (nee Glynn) of Calgary, passed away suddenly at the Cedars Villa Nursing Home on Thursday, January 22, 1998 at the age of 84 years. Eileen was a faithful longtime parishioner of St. John's Catholic Church, and a member of the C.W.L. Eileen is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and her husband Gerald Kalyniuk of Calgary, Margaret and her husband Douglas Sanders of Kelowna; four grandchildren, Geoffrey and Elizabeth Kalyniuk, and Stephanie and Michael Sanders. She is also survived by two sisters, Rita Foy of Edmonton, and Sylvia Long of Calgary; and two brothers, Douglas Glynn of Victoria, and Hugh Glynn of Ottawa; as well as their families. She was predeceased by her husband Courtney in 1987. LANGMO -- Dorothie Winifred (formerly Standish) (nee Dudley-Smith). Born in Calgary, July 1, 1909; passed away peacefully in Vancouver January 20, 1998. She is survived by loving daughters, Anne (Al) Fitzpatrick, Calgary, and Joan Langmo, Edmonton; three granddaughters, Carolyn Fitzpatrick, Sandra (Lance) Davidson and Shelley (Dave) Molyneaux; and six great-grandchildren; one brother Tobe (Barbara) Smith and family; loving companion Ron Baker of Vancouver; and three stepchildren, Don, Ruth and Gordon, and their families. She was predeceased by a daughter Jane, and second husband John. She obtained her Licentiate of the Associated Board degrees in both piano and violin at age seventeen, joining the Calgary Symphony the same year (later playing first viola). She also joined the "Capitolians" vaudeville and silent movie orchestra in the 1920's. In 1952, she joined the newly-formed Edmonton Symphony, retiring in 1979. She taught both violin and piano in Calgary and Edmonton for most of her adult life. Several of her students went on to the National Youth Orchestra and to be professional musicians in symphony orchestras. She was the first president of the Registered Music Teachers of Alberta, helped found the Edmonton Chamber Music Society, conducted student examinations for the Western Board of Music, and had a season with Chautauqua. A "working mother" before her time, she managed to raise a family and find time for award-winning needlework and preserves, volunteer work and gardening. She will be affectionately remembered as an example by her family and a wealth of friends and students. "She is not where she used to be - but she is everywhere we are." No flowers please. McLAUGHLIN -- Barry McLaughlin. It is with great sorrow that Barry's family announces his sudden death on January 22, 1998 at the age of 44 years. Barry is survived and will be greatly missed by his beloved wife Lynn and children, Katie and Jake; his parents, Grace and Bill; brother Wayne (Marta); sister Wendy (Rick); and numerous other relatives, friends, colleagues and students. While thoroughly enjoying his work with students and staff at Woodman Junior High and his coaching with the Ringette "Rockers", Barry's greatest accomplishments were those of loving father, husband, son, brother and friend. OLSEN -- Donald Kenneth of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital on Sunday, January 25, 1998 at the age of 78 years. Donald is survived by brother Walter and wife Laura of Eckville; sisters, Margaret Cunningham of Eckville, Mildred Fraser and husband Russell of Calgary; sister-in-law Audrey Olsen of Eckville; and also special friend Jean Gheran of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Donald Olsen was born and raised on the family farm at Eckville. He joined the armed forces in June of 1941, then returned home after the war where he continued to farm until taking employment at the CPR stockyards in Calgary. Upon retiring, he enjoyed bowling and numerous other activities. Donald will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his family and friends. PIGEON -- Patricia, age 40 years. On January 24, 1998 God's angels came to carry our beloved Pat home into the arms of Jesus after a two year fight with cancer. Patty was at home comforted by her family and friends. She will be remembered forever in our hearts. WINWOOD -- On January 24, 1998, Christine Winwood of Calgary, formerly of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Joan Winwood (Alf Smith) of Calgary, and Ed (Pat) Winwood of Edmonton; and her dear grandchildren, Darrell and Laura Winwood. She also leaves to mourn one brother John MacKenzie of Calgary; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews and their families, as well as close friends. Christine was predeceased by her husband Art in 1973, and five sisters. Christine was proud of her Air Force service in World War II. She was known for her desire to keep in touch with everyone by letter writing, and her heart was never far from Cape Breton and her Gaelic roots. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 1998 in Mountain View Cemetery, Field of Honour Section, Lethbridge, Alberta with Reverend Larry D. Hankinson officiating. YOUNGREN -- Iris Dorothy Youngren, born Iris Dorothy Mudd in Limehouse, England, June 30, 1922, passed away suddenly and painlessly on Friday, January 23, 1998 at the Foothills Hospital, in Calgary, while recovering from surgery. She is survived in Canada by her loving husband Carl Youngren; her children, Lorraine (Lister) Doig and Christopher Youngren; as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and in England, by her sisters, Audrey (Fred) Davis and Mavis Goodwin; her brother Tony (Janet) Mudd; her especially beloved Aunt Gladys Barker; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Iris was predeceased by her eldest daughter Sandra in 1975. Iris and Carl married in England in May 1943, returning to Carl's home in Alberta with their young family in April 1946. Iris led a busy and accomplished life as a housewife and mother, and an organizer for Junior Girl's Curling at the Calgary Winter Club, a political activist, and a working woman. She was secretary of the Calgary North Federal Constituency Office, President of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Women's Association, and a longtime member and Past President of the Calgary Foothills Hospital Auxiliary. In 1982, she presented a petition of several thousand names to The House of Lords in Westminster, England voicing concerns about the repatriation of the Constitution. In 1992, Iris and Carl were each awarded the Confederation Medal of Canada. ARDERN -- Florence Ethel, beloved wife of the late Mr. Harold Ardern, passed away peacefully at the Glenmore Park Nursing Home on January 12, 1998 at the age of 95 years. She is the loving mother of Lawrence (Betty) of Calgary and Donald (Stella) of ngland. Ethel is also survived by her grandchildren, Tony (Sue), Christine (Richard), both of Calgary, and Nicola, Zoe, both of England; her great-grandchildren, Rosalyn, Carla, Allison, Holly, Chelsea, all of Calgary, and Georgia of England. Florence was predeceased by her sisters, Phyllis and Irene. Ethel was born July 15, 1902 in England. She immigrated to Canada in 1989 and stayed until her passing. BERGMAN -- William H. Bergman, dearly beloved husband of Mary (Riet) Bergman, of Calgary, passed away suddenly on January 10, 1998 at the age of 64 years. Dearly beloved father of Corinne, and father-in-law of Kevin. Dear brother of Nel of Australia,John (Sybilla) of Calgary, Father Augustine of Argentina, Chris of Calgary, and Annie (Roy) of The Netherlands. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, one sister and his parents. Bill was completely devoted to his family. He absolutely adored Riet and Corinne. Bill loved nothing more than to spend time with them and his many, many friends, both in Calgary and abroad. Everyone who knew him, especially those at the Royal Canadian Legion and Dutch Canadian Club knew he was never short for words, always ready with a story. . . and yet another story. He radiated life when he was with the people he loved. It is very quiet without you, Bill. You will be dearly missed. Rest in peace. BERZE -- Mrs. Mary Berze of Calgary passed away in Inglewood Manor, West Vancouver on Tuesday, January 6, 1998 at the age of 83 years. Mrs. Berze was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 1991. She will be lovingly remembered by two daughters, Mrs. Irne McDougall and Mrs. Sandra Quance; three sisters, Mrs. Julia Gergley, Mrs. Anne Blake, and Mrs. Elizabeth Keller. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Mrs. Susan Zorzut, Mr. Scott McDougall; one great-grandchild Master Forrest Zorzut; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Berze was born in Hungary and moved with her family to Calgary in 1927, where she resided until 1993 when she moved to West Vancouver. She was well-known for her cooking, baking and generous hospitality, and also was an expert at all needlecrafts.
