Alice Winnifred Chappell nee: Brown, of Lloydminster
Chappell: Alice Winnifred Chappell (Winnie) was born on July 26, 1916, and passed away on September 6, 2004, in Lloydminster Hospital after a brief illness.
Winnie was born to Andy and Myrtle Brown in Ardoch, Ontario. At a very young age, she moved with her family to Kindersley, Saskatchewan. Winnie always fondly remembered her years in the Kindersley area where she attended Cloverdale School. She enjoyed an active life playing ball, taking piano lessons, skating, and winning races and jumping contests.
During the Depression the family moved to the McKague area in Saskatchewan. Shortly after that Winnie moved to Calgary where she took more schooling and worked in a dental office. Saskatchewan called her back and she moved to the Englefeld area where she was soon swept off her feet by Steve Chappell. They were married in 1937 and farmed in that area. Winnie was always a hard worker performing all inside and many outside chores.
When World War II arrived, Steve was unable to enlist because of a previously unknown heart condition. Winnie and Steve moved to Hamilton to work in factories, but the farm was Steve’s passion, and they returned to farming at Englefeld, spending winters in Spalding, Saskatchewan.
In 1963, due to Steve’s health, the farm had to be sold, and Winnie followed him to Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. Winnie enjoyed her time in Foam Lake being an active member of the United Church and the UCW. In 1974 Winnie and Steve retired moving to Saskatoon. Steve passed away in July 1978. Winnie continued to reside in Saskatoon enjoying yard work, gardening, and crocheting while still at the house and then socializing with her friends at the Saskatoon Towers.
She moved to the Waterford in Edmonton in 1992 and remained there for nine years. In 2001 Winnie moved to the Dr. Hemstock Residence in Lloydminster where she resided until her passing.
Family was always the most important part of Winnie’s life. Her family will forever remember her help, advice, and sacrifices, and especially cherish the many happy moments spent visiting while playing a game of cards and drinking a cup of tea.
Winnie was predeceased by her Mother in 1939, her Father in 1965, her brother Willie in 1972, and her husband Steve in 1978.
Winnie, fondly called “Mother Hubbard” by her three daughters, is survived by Marilyn (Ernie) Manum of Edmonton; Fay (Blaine) Hanson of Foam Lake; and Glenda (John) McMaster of Lloydminster; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren: Terry (Patty) Manum, Jenna and Shane; Darren (Lynn) Manum, Sydney and Shayla; Dawn (Warren) Wetter, Katey and Walker; Marla (Stan) Zielinski, Savannah; Brad McMaster; Lindsey McMaster.
