Melvin Frederick Wilkes, of Lloydminster
WILKES: Melvin Frederick Wilkes passed away in the Lloydminster Hospital on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the age of 82 years.
Mel was born in Lloydminster November 5, 1921, the second child of Frederick and Eva Wilkes. His birthday was celebrated on the 7th until Mel - who always thought his name was Melvin - found not only was his name Melville but his birthday was November 5th.
He grew up in Kitscoty and before he turned 21 he enlisted with his older brother Alwyn. He and Alwyn were together throughout their wartime until Mel saw his brother wounded in an explosion. He never knew that his brother was fine and shipped home until he was home himself in 1946.
He met and married Blanche in 1949 and they had three children Thomas, Arthur and Lois.
Mel was in the transport business for many years hauling all over Alberta and Saskatchewan. He was a bit of a mechanic and a carpenter never afraid to try anything.
He moved north to the Loon Lake area in 1965, where he was employed by Setrakov Farms. He was a ranch hand with Eugene and then his sons John and Donald until he retired at 69 years of age in July 1991.
He moved back to Lloyd then to be close to his family and moved into Hallsholme. He enjoyed spending time with family and attending family functions. He enjoyed his gadgets, like his shortwave radio, his collections and his jigsaw puzzles.
He was a morning coffee row man and had to be home by noon because most of all he became an avid soap opera fan. He could always be found in the afternoon in his apartments watching his shows. If you wanted to find Mel you knew he would always be home in the afternoon.
Mel kept a positive attitude all through his illness and never let it get him down. He slipped quietly away Saturday morning with family at his side. He will be missed.
Mel is survived by: two sons: Tom Wilkes and his wife Julie of Courtenay, BC; Art Wilkes and his wife Michelle of Lloydminster; one daughter Lois and her husband Bryan Dribnenky of Lloydminster; four grandchildren: Joe Wilkes and his wife Julie of Calgary; Aimee and her husband Jason Kenyon of Calgary; Simon Dribnenky of Lloydminster and Gregg Dribnenky of Lloydminster; one great grandchild Chloe Kenyon of Calgary; one brother Alwyn Wilkes and his wife Cec of Lloydminster; two sisters: Dot and her husband Sid Bexson of Sooke, BC; Audry and her husband Leonard Vallee of Edam; one sister-in-law: Irene Wilkes of Drayton Valley, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

WHEN I MUST LEAVE YOU
When I must leave you for a little while,
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you through the years;
But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
And for my sake and in my name
Live on and do all things the same.
Feed not your loneliness on empty days,
But fill each waking hour in useful ways.
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer;
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near.
And never, never be afraid to die,
for I am waiting for you in the sky!
